New to DoD, a couple of questionsFollow

Well met all,

I'm relatively new to Everquest but very familiar to MMO's. I picked up DoD recently and I have a few questions about monster missions. For starters, I've been reading recent posts on these forums that seem to carry a negative opinion about monster missions. Do people still do them for fun or is it just for exp?

Secondly, I've seen the Shroud folks in PoK, but I've not seen anyone there that assigns the actual monster missions. Where abouts would I find the NPCs that start these quests?

Can I really do these missions with other people even though I'm still a low level toon?

Lastly, and I suppose this is more subjective than anything, but is it worth my time to level up more and explore the content of LDoN first (I'm told that in a few levels I can effectively begin with that content) or is doing some monster missions and level grinding more appropriate until I can be more effective to a group?

Any input here would be greatly appreciated. I'm about 7 years late coming into this game and I realize there is an overwhelming amount of content for me to catch up on.

Its the journey not the destination, so enjoy these low level and do not rush to high level.

MM can be great but some people get addicted to the short attention span experience and only do them, that is the complaint plus leveling up without getting your skills, gear and spells in line with your new level. MM are fun and can offer great benefit is used sparingly when nothing else is around.

Shrouds are different from MM which are instanced missions. MM givers are scatered around the varous zones, some easy some very hard.

Shrouds offer a temporary watered down verison of other classes, enableing high level people to fill gaps in groups or raids (well in theory, but rare in practice) and to group in regular zones with lower levels by taking a lower level shroud.

"I'm relatively new to Everquest but very familiar to MMO's."
Welcome! Great to see a new face.

"For starters, I've been reading recent posts on these forums that seem to carry a negative opinion about monster missions"
People are rather cynical about EQ now.. almost all aspects of it. Its just the general view.

"Do people still do them for fun or is it just for exp?"
You're right to put these two points together. The cynical nature comes from the answer to this.. its for EXP. Doing the missions over and over and over isn't fun. EQ is about escaping from real life, not about fun.. takes a while to realize it, I guess.

"Secondly, I've seen the Shroud folks in PoK, but I've not seen anyone there that assigns the actual monster missions. Where abouts would I find the NPCs that start these quests?"
Those Shroud folk in PoK are for if you want to become a monster, and then, otherwise, play the game normally. You'll have to go to specific locations to do missions.. and you need not be in any form when you go to them. Just check around the site for this sort of information.

"Can I really do these missions with other people even though I'm still a low level toon?"
Yup. When you start a mission, it butchers all skills and abilities a player once had, and they don the new avatar. A level 1 can be far more helpful an ally than a level 70 in a MM, all depending on the player himself. Group Leadership abilities and points are the one exception to this.

"is it worth my time to level up more and explore the content of LDoN first"
LDoN's, unlike MM's, do not grant a new avatar to the player. LDoN groups tend to yield less experience and are a bit more old fashion now, so they're not nearly as popular as they used to be. I'd suggest doing a couple, starting in your mid-20's or 30's. If nothing else, they give you a truer feel for the game.. MM's, though very helpful, are very.. skewed.

"level grinding more appropriate until I can be more effective to a group? "
As long as you're a decent player, and there are no outstanding flaws to your character, you should always be an effective addition to a group of your peers. However, finding such a group may be difficult now, as much are in the extreme end of level ranges.

Just.. a personal note. Many are almost unspeakably wealthy.. some are even generous with a small percentage of their fortunes. If you accept such gifts, it'll help you advance much more quickly, but it may loss a bit of the "real" feeling and jade you.

Thank you for the advice and for clearing up my confusion about Shrouds and Monster Missions. I agree completely the journey outweighs the destination and I'm greatly looking forward to my time in Norrath.

Already I've seen that EQ players are a much more mature and friendly community than many of the other games I've played. I'm looking forward to being a part of the community.

I just want to welcome you to the fold here. Also, I like your attitude toward the game. You'll hve a great time and be around for the long haul with that approach.

Be safe and have fun - that's what it's all about.

I looted the reward item from a MM recently and I couldn't find it after the MM (my inventory was not full on my char btw). Since I haven't done too many MMs, I wanted to ask a quick question regarding loot:

When you loot an item at the end of the mission, where does it go? That is, does it appear in your inventory when you leave the MM? Is it in your shroud bank?

Thanks

Into your first available slot. Keep in mind that the item you loot, unless you're 61+ (accurate?), isn't what you're getting. You'll get a lower grade of the item, with a different name, elsewise.

Well, I was level 63 and at the time of this HHK MM my char was wearing Armbands of the Keep. The reward I looted was Darkrune Tanned Armguards (ARTIFACT).

Not only did the Darkrune Tanned Armguards Not appear, but no item appeared in my first inventory slot. Do you think that this was because the Darkrune Tanned Armguards somehow reverted to the Armbands of the Keep?

I dinged 61, did the highhold mission for the shoulders. I looted them and had both the 51-60 version (equipped) and the 61+ version in my inventory. Same with the sleeves from The Overthere mission.
They do not magically transform nor are you prevented from looting because of lore.

FYI, if you plan on looting something, make sure you have an open spot in inventory when you enter the mission. If there is no space, you wont get your prize unless you petition 5 times and hope someone answering petitons understands what you are talking about.

LOL. I'm totally loving the cynicism.

Simple the Armbands of the keep are the reward for lvl 61-? So if you already wear them your looted item will not be taken of corpse as it is lore to what you wear.
