I've been through class after class trying to work myself back into EQ and I've finally come to the conclusion that I love rangers :p

So I'm here asking everyone a few things.
First off, if I were to twink a ranger, what should I twink him with? I have a 31% haste belt, Helm of White Dragon, fungi, etc. and a 14/22 1hs - will this suffice? What about a bow? Offhand sword? (BoC worth it?)
Secondly, How exactly is bow damage figured? What can I expect to do, damage wise, at each level?
Third, Any race/religion suggestions? I had a halfling ranger but I got rid of him, as I had heard most of the good bows are wood-elf only.

Well, thanks for helping an old player get back into the game.

As a rule rangers spend their life trying to avoid aggro to procing weapons should only be used if grouped with a tank that can handle the additional aggro.

Hit points are everything when twinking and low delay/high damage weapons for dps.

bows only com into there own post 50 so it is worth waitinf for one of the PoP player made 100 hp ones in my opinion.

Rangers are a lot like rogues. You can do great damage if you have a warrior/paly/sk that can keep the mobs attention. Rangers are not tanks; however, you can take a few hits and be ok.

If I were two twink a ranger, I would get two sets of weapons. Set 1 would be the best weapons I could get my hands on (no matter of the procs). Set 2 would be the best no proc weapons I could find. If you are in a group and keep stealing aggro with Set 1, either switch to Set 2 or a combination thereof.

For twinking, just go for pure HP at the lower levels. Regen helps if you are soloing. If you are PL'ing and have a healer, just worry about HP.

Bow damage at lower levels is debateable. Most people will say wait until AM3 (archery mastery 3) and EQ (endless quiver) AA's. EQ is needed just so you don't have to keep summoning arrows and you can get the best one that you can find (and never shoot it). I am in the camp that you should wait until those AA and a good bow until you sit back and autofire.

Edit: I know well geared (i.e. high end) rangers can tank a lot of content; however, they are not tanks.

First point Race. The karana rangers now have nice bows and deity items as well. So a halfling or human karana ranger is Ok.
Items, the above posters have it covered. My ranger at 31 has been switching between a lammy, rockstudded smasher (love the 8 wisdom and ratio on it.) axe of the venomous brood, widebladed gs for 2hs, war marhslls baton for 2hs and a twisted longbow.
You need to keep the archery current, but root and shoot works.
As far as arrows, you can loot lots of 3 copper arrows in the tutorial. I keep a level 6 there to buy from the merchants and pick up arrows from the barrels. You still need to skill up in fletching or make friends with a mage however for the magic arrows.

Notes:

Rangers gain ranged criticals at level 12.

Wood Elves seem to be perfered Rangers based off player desirablity, yet Halflings level faster due to racial EXP bonus.

Low level EQ was NOT designed for the twinks you are giving your Ranger. The game should already be sickeningly easy. Apply more funds if you want it to be even easier.

Karana seems to have the most desirable Ranger set of ranged equipment. Check out the item "Mark of Karana" and the recipes in which it may be used to see some of these which are tradeskill produced. Additionally, this will provide an easier tradeskilling path, with use of the Mark of Karana for Flecthing and Smithing.

Fight blue cons. Yes, you can take reds, especially with that twinkage. However, mass blues will yield greater EXP per time spent.

Time average run speed with range and bow delay. Ideally, you want your bow to hit the target as many times as possible for as much damage as possible before it reaches you, if you intend to melee it (which, with your items, wouldn't be a problem). Higher range is valuable. For a cheap ranged bow, pick up a Shaped Shadewood Compound Bow (sp?). Also, "Flight Arrow"s are a cheap alterative to more expensive Flecth'd arrows with a higher range.

A quiver provides (1/3 * WeightReduction) as Haste in a manner similar to v3 Haste, but also stacks with v3 (but not itself). Therefore, I'd recommend getting a decent quiver. Tailored Quivers are 22% WR, while regular at 20%. Fleeting are 60%! Its all how much you're willing to invest. (Note Tailored has two slots over the regular's four.)

Fighting in bluebie EQ is mundane. Do it however you like. These are some thoughts to consider, but its all very open and insignificant. Sorry if I seem apathetic at the moment.

A few points I'd like to make/highlight...

For weapons you should keep all your skills up; along with that 14/22 1HS get a 14/22 1HB (say, Grand Sceptre of Ice) and a 2hs at the least. A Swarmcaller is nice to have later on - it procs Slow in the 40s. Multiple weapons are easy to use with the Bandolier.

If I were going to twink out a ranger I would

1. Get a Bloody Aniceilles pouch (sp is off Im sure) summons hunters barbs. They will work until you get AM and EQ. Uses square green gems bought from any magnus.

2. Use a fleeting quiver for bow haste.

3. Hp are king at low levels.

4. Power leveling? High level Shaman with Puma rules... get in group long enough for Puma, drop and kill.... easy...
