Some SK questionsFollow

Well, I just activated my account again and decided to start a troll SK. I was wondering how well an sk can solo. I will probably be soloing a lot seeing as i wont be twinked(all my old toons are gone)and i hear that most groups dont want untwinked tanks. Is this true? If so what would be my best option for a soloing class that will be of use in raids in the end game?

SKs can solo to 70

Bards Shaman beastlords necros druids and wizards could all solo to 70 and are all used in raids

OK first off starting an untwinked tank off in eq at this point is just asking for trouble. Low level groups are hard to find as it is. Also remember as a tank you are gear limited, which means as other classes move to better areas with better xp and drops you will have to stay behind because you cant handle the mobs. Which basicly means you will level slower then almost any other class and you will be flat broke at all times.

As far as soloing it is "technically" true that sk can solo to 70. But the devil is in the details. SK soloing after like level 30 involves fear kiting. XP in this fashion is very very slow. You would always be better off looking for a grp. Also remember w/o a buffbot your dps will be extremely limited.

As far as raids go really it depends on what you want to do. All classes are wll liked in raids except some guilds dont like berserkers because of the lack of raid related utilities (ranger ws and rogue corpse runs for example). As far as tanks go sk is at the bottom of the list for raids. Our great agro tools cant overvcome a good paladins ability to heal so that makes us third most desireable in raids for tanks behind pallies and of course warriors.

As far as the best solo classes all pure casters solo very well. BEastlords are also excellent soloers. At the high end rangers can bow solo but not nearly as effeciently as the other classes.

MY advice: Starting an untwinked tank will lead you to quit the game. If you like melee and soloing go with a beast lord. Once they get their pet early on they own and are considered the 2nd best soloers in the game behind necros in most peoples opinion.

WARNING: Just thought of somehting else. When you make a tank you will reach certain zones when the next step up is HUGE. While the dps and caster classes can go you cant. FOR example the difference between a bastion of thunder mob and a wall of slaughter mob is substantial. Even if you got all the best store bought gear in the game (which you will never be able to afford but if) you still would struggle and get a bad reputation as a tank. Also dont forget that you will have to stop xp'ing for a while to do some required aa'ing for your defensive abilities, which again means you are trapped in lower zones while every other non tank class moves up.

If you are serios about playing a tank id reccomend botting a cleric or shammy. GOdd luck man

OH almost forgot. As a troll you will receive the games largest xp penalty (-20%). This will also drasticlally reduce your leveling and soloing abilities.

REMEMBER: casters are soe's pet classes and they give you no reason to play a tank. ALso also for most of your careeer, if not all of it, some casters will have pets that would own you all by themselves.

well, I can't really comment on the SK part, but add my 2CP when it comes to the untwinked discussion and half a cent ot raiding.

what is untwinked? untwinked is, when yer character doesn't start the game with e.g. the custom cowl of mortality and HP/mana items. does that mean your character will try to survive on gear aquired through quest/mobs you killed yourself? no. so, use the bazaar, and you will most likely be on par with about 70% (guesstimate) of the players, when it comes to gear. it might take ye a bit longer, but eventually you will get there.

as to raiding, well, depends again of what you define. is raiding the occasional EPIC mob fight for yer guildies and friends, or is it the biweekly time raid? if it's the latter, then it can get tough. and for the EPIC mobs I hope ye have yer "infusion of the faithful"

It is very easy to make money in the bazaar. Spiderling silks, on almost any server will sell for 10 to 20p.
Your newbie armor from the tutorial and the tasks will suffice, and since most folks dont go anywhere without temp, your lack of "twinkage" should not have a negative impact on any groups you get in.

I do have a young sk, rarely played, but I do enjoy some aspects of the class. I dont think an Sk is a 3rd choice when it comes to being a tank for raids, and as a troll Sk your extra regen will lessen your downtime. Yes you have an exp penalty, but its not that bad. I have been able to get to 41 on my shaman in only 5 weeks of casual play time.

I have played a troll SK since I joined EQ.

I have received occasional hand me down gear and once I got some cash I twinked my weapon a bit but by no means am I super twinkie material.

I have mostly soloed my whole life and let me tell you the XP penalty will make you feel like you are bleeding from the eyes.

However, I do like my character greatly. There is pride when I gain a level knowing how much harder I had to work for it. Also now a days get a temp and clarity and hunt.

Find low level groups because they will probably be twinked and they can speed through lower level stuff. If they are twinked they may gear to help you out or they will leave all/most of the loot for you.

Once you get to a level above some areas, remember what was good to loot and if you happen to be travelling through or broke, go back and farm it.

With the bazaar - Cash = Gear!

My primary alt is an iksar sk. Unlike all my other alts, Kassdax is completely on his own when it comes to gear and plat.

The naysayers about untwinked tanks don't know what they're talking about. All you need to do is look at your server economy and figure out what lower level mobs drop spendy trade skill items. Farm highly used items while xp'ing and bazaar them. Use that plat to purchase gear for yourself.

Shadow knights can solo, just not as well as some other classes. I solo'd with my shadow knight exclusively until his mid 40's. Now he duo's with either a druid or a shaman and rarely groups with others.

Here's what a untwinked shadow knight can get gear wise if played smart. http://www.magelo.com/eq_view_profile.html?num=736594

As for the groups that don't want untwinked tanks....to hell with them. If they're insecure enough about their playing abilities that they feel the need to dump 500k plat on a level 40 toon then you don't want/need them.....seriously.

The best source for shadow knight information. Read all the faq's/rules/etc. and you'll be fine. These four things are absolutes when posting/reading on the shadow knight boards. If you don't read and understand and follow them prepare to be violated in mean ways. If you do read/follow/understand these things you'll be thrown a ton of very useful information.
