EQ and DAOC attract the same type of players but with different playstyles. EQ attracts people who like building things with toothpicks. DAOC attracts those who like building things with popsicle sticks. You can accomplish much more in DAOC investing less time, energy and resources than you can in EQ.
Some of the differences include:
Corpse runs: Gotta go get your corpse which has all your belongings on it in EQ; in DAOC you leave a gravestone at which you can go back to and pray to regain a portion of experience lost - or not. Your choice.
Experience loss on death: You can not only lose bunches of experience dying in EQ, but you can lose levels also. In DAOC, you cannot lose levels - kind of a get out of jail free card if you use the time right after you level to explore new areas and try new things.
Soloability: Most classes have a lot of difficulty soloing in EQ. Granted, experienced players may have figured out ways to solo most classes, but the beginner will find things much, much more difficult. In DAOC, every class can solo effectively provided you keep your primary line of attack skills close to your level.
Size of world and traveling: I haven't played EQ in years, but before you could teleport most places, getting anywhere in EQ not only meant a long trip, but most times, a dangerous trip. In DAOC, taking a horse means you won't be attacked. Granted, the trip is a lot more boring than in EQ, but it doesn't take nearly as long either.
Goal oriented PvP: On regular EQ servers, it doesn't exist as EQ is a PvE world. If you like PvP, DAOC has it in abundance in the form of RvR (realm vs. realm) combat. Split into 3 warring realms, they fight to overtake each other's keeps and steal each other's national treasures (relics).
Because you build your character in DAOC with popsicle sticks, many EQ players see it as too easy. They come to DAOC, say huh? and go back to EQ. However, DAOC did woo many players from EQ because back when EQ was the best game in town, people played it whether they liked the mechanics of it or not. When DAOC was released, removing a lot of the toothpick parts of EQ, those players loved it.
Right now, Anarchy Online is considered one of the better games online. Personally, I don't like the modern/post-modern theme. Somehow, trading sword and sorcery for assault rifles and nanos just doesn't work for me. However, as the Shadowlands expansion pack (which includes the original game) can be had for $10 and includes a month's free play, it's worth the investment to try it for yourself. Forget any 7-day trial you might come across because that is not enough time to really learn the game.
