Looking for a new MMOFollow

#1 May 03 2005 at 10:15 PM Rating: Decent
Ok i know that there are other threads like this but didnt find a spot where it felt appropriate to post this.

My situation is that I'm coming from SWG. I loved the game and as far as i know had several aspects which were unique among MMOs. The problem is that Lucas recently forced the release of a massive Combat Upgrade which has been over a year in the making way too early and the gme is neither playable nor fun anymore. Im trying to get a feel for other MMOs. I have tried WoW and am still subscribed but something(s) about it are making me search further afield. I also got the free EQ2 trial but i cant get a very good feel for the game when im limited to a small *** island and cant advance beyond level 6. I am currently downloading the DaoC trial (18% done lol) and Ive heard a lot of good stuff about it.

Id appreciate if I could get some feedback about the games i mentioned as well as some suggestions about others I should be looking at. Also Id appreciate any info on the crafting and housing systems (if they exist) since i really liked the comprehensive crafting profs in SWG as well as player cities.

I know Im asking for a lot of info so thanks in aadvance for anything you can share.

EDIT: Ok i got the trial and I just want to confirm that the graphics in-game will resemble the graphics seen in char creation if i were to get the expansions right?

Hey There, first off, DAoC is way better than EQ2, EQ2 is all eye candy. DApC is by far the best MMO I've played. The graphics on the trial you got will be what you see in game as far as I know, until you get the Catacombs expansion, which has graphical upgrades, mainly toward character models. That and Mythic has some free expansion's, goto thier website to find how how to download them if you decide to keep the game, later

Having come from SWG myself, and returned there at one point, I think I can offer some valuable info it it's not too late... in case it isn't...

Combat is much different than in SWG- of course mainly because it's a much different era and much different game. It's a bit harder to get used to, you can't queue combat commands the same way as SWG- which was nice about the SWG... You have to be much more reactive and proactive than SWG- which is a nice challenge as well. In SWG you could make a macro for you whole combat queue if you wanted and play it all out w/ the push of one button... Not so in DAoC... many of your combat styles build off your last action- such as a block or an evade or a parry- even off of your last style. These can make for powerful combo's that are more challanging to reach than in SWG.

Content is much different... quests are more interactive imo. SWG has about 4 diff types of missions: destroy, escort, and well maybe only about two... destroy and escort. DAoC will have you running (sometimes painfully) over the whole of the realm looking for bits and pieces of a quest. Soemtimes it's worth it, sometimes it's not. You have fewer, "Go and rescue this commander/defector and bring him to the base..." type missions. There are new realm missions, much like SWG had faction missions. But there are more types, and they're more flexible. Overall, there is more to DAoC than SWG.

No Jedi- [nearly] everyone wants to be a Jedi in SWG... everyone is grinding for it. Not so much in DAoC... the grind is for lvl 50, but it's fun on the way there. And it doesn't stop there. If you make it a grind, it will be a grind, if you make it fun, it will be fun.

Guilds... much more wortwhile than the PA's in SWG. in SWG you can survive w/out a guild, in DAoC, it's much harder. Guilds often belong to alliances. Alliances help you find gear and group members and friends.

Graphics are always being updated in DAoC. They're not eye candy in many areas, but they're good. They're much better w/ the catacombs engine (which can be downloaded for free).

Overall, while I sometimes missed SWG, I was much happier w/ DAoC. My TKM/Master Doc could rake in the money and helped me get FS, but I got real bored real quick after that.

I almost forgot crafting...

crafting is not so much fun in DAoC as it was in SWG. But SWG was completely player-based in economy. If you had anything decent, it was play-made. DAoC is loot-based and player crafted based. You can have legendary weapons and armor that are as good as (if not better than) much of the loot out there.

It's harder though. Crafting is boring imo. Some people can handle it though. I hate it. A lot of people don't though, and like it a lot. The benefits are worthwhile though, you can find a good place in a guild or alliance and make some good gear and you can sell it off your housing merchant. There's no real market/bazaar system though, which sucks. That kind of system would be nice and make player crafted gear and loot much easier to sell. Most of the time you can only find gear that is for level 40 and above because it requires ownership of a house to sell on the market- which you can't really afford to buy/upkeep until level 40. So, there ya go. Hope that helps!
