Read some other posts to find out more about classic servers, but in short, they do not have the Trials of Atlantis as part of them, which includes artifacts and Master Levels.
They also do not allow buffs outside of groups which has semi-eliminated buff-bots.
These servers are much newer (started less than a year ago), have more casual people in them, and I think are better to "start over" in then the traditional serves.
That being said, I play on a normal server, and my guild has had about 15 people join the past two months that are entirely new to either the game or the server and are starting from scratch.
About finding people, it is true that it is not always easy on most servers. That is primarily because it is an older game and Mythic wanted to encourace its existing player base to have incentive to level up new toons. They did this by making it much faster thourgh catacombs instance Task Dungeons. Most people that have resources in the game do it this way now.
I just created a toon on Gareth though (a classic server) and there are a bunch of newbies there too, so if this is a problem to you and you don't know people already in game to get a guild, then maybe the classics are for you. It is the same game with the same lands, but PvP is also a bit slowed down b/c the uber gear is not in those servers.
Good luck, and don't be afraid to at least try coming back. The end game is still the Realm vs. Realm, and although PvE content is often thought of out-dated in DAoC, its RvR is still the best there is. Equipping your characters is easier then ever now on whatever server you join...you just need to find people that are willing to help you along and take you in to enjoy this game to its fullest.
