Just bought DAOC... need some info/adviceFollow

As the subject says I just bought DAOC online and it should be here 3-5 buisness days.

I've been doing some reading and I think I'm going to be a Lurikeen Ranger on the PvP server Mordred.

Now I would like to know if there are too many Rangers running around as it is. I would like to play a class that is needed. Ranger would be my first choice but if theres an overpopulation of them I would change. I would also like to know how Hibernias is compared to Albion and Midgard (example: The Albion outnumber the Midgard who outnumber the Hibernias).

My point is I played FFXI and WOW and it seemed I always rolled the most played race and class. So I would like to avoid that here and start off right. I like to be the underdog so to speak.

So if someone could inform me what class is needed the most and what race seems to fit that class the best I would appreciate it. That's why I'm posting here. Thanks in advance and I can't wait to play.

I would not recommend Mordred as a starting server. The population on this server is very low, because it is such a unique server. Also, if you don't belong to a good guild, you will have no resources. Anyone from any realm can kill you.

As for Ranger, I guess if you are set on starting here, then this is not the worst toon you could pick. Your stealth will at least give you some advantage, although Rangers don't really level all that well. If you know some friends, then go ahead and join it and maybe they can help you out, but I would recommend a more standard server/ruleset to learn the game with.

Yes roll on mordred

Their are alot of any calsses on mordred it does not matter what you make it matters of how you play your char. if you are gunna play on mordred you mainly solo unless you have friends. A ranger would be best choice for solo beacuse they do lotsa dmg and really fast if you spec it right. but i would suggest makin a necro(to farm scrolls get yourartys and lotsa mony and really easy to get to 50. And after that you should mayeb make an eldritch and spec light if you coem to mordred. Get cast speed capped and get champion buffs and you will have cast time of 1 second and you get a mezz stun and nearsight(Best classs on mrodred but and infil could own an eldritch) thats why you get ml2 for the stealth node. if you have any questons post on the mordresd topic

Well, Adeathwish is really trying to recruit people to that server, and is offering PL's it seems.

However, to me it is a bad choice to begin the game with. Soloing is probably as good there as it is on most any server, so if that is ALL you want, then sure, a Ranger there would be an okay choice.

But you will never know the true game if you don't play on a normal server also. Without knowing people on this server, you just won't experience much of what DAoC is about (and classes are not balanced based on soloing, but instead more on a Realm vs. Realm basis). Mordred is certainly unique and has some appeal, but my advice would be to go to Ector, Lamorak or Gareth to begin since there you will find other new people to the game, can learn your class while leveling (you will learn nothing by being PL'd as you will be worthless to the group), and can meet people. If you meet a few people that also have toons on Mordred, then maybe then switch over if you feel the solo game is something that interests you.

Thank you guys for replying. At this point I really don't care about soloing. I would also like to group some. Money isn't really a concern for me as I always seem to save and make good investments.

I think I will roll on a Normal server and then if it gets boring I'll go to Mordred. I would like to experience the game but also I'm mostly here for the PvP or I guess it's RvR here. I like going against other people. As I always say "Gank and be ganked"(no I didn't come up w/ saying just using it).

I'm one of those guys who likes to be a hero. When some says "such and such is under attack we need help" I'll drop everything and run as fast as i can taking every shortcut to help (it's sad I know LOL). I love helping other people and ganking someone who just ganked someone 20 lvls below them. (I use the word gank too much sorry ><)

Thanks for all the help hopefully I'll get the game on Friday or I'll have to wait till Monday to play it :( or it better come in on Monday if not Friday... knowing my luck I'll get an E-mail need Wed "ohh your odrder is on Backorder it will be 3 more weeks" /sigh

Ohh yeah Noob question. How many expansions are there and do I have to have them to play?

I'd suggest the Caeleon cluster. Make a toon on the Lancelot server. We are the largest most populated cluster with Trials of Atlantis. I'd suggest an Alb, but thats just because I'm an alb.

Guinevere or Perc would be a good server for you too. Keep in mind when you see PvP server that doesnt mean its the only server for PvP. Mordred is a fight everyone all the time kinda pvp servers on WoW. Regular servers in DAoC provide safe areas for leveling and designated PvP/RvR zones to kill non realm mates.

Ranger is a good class. By far the best overall stealther in the game. Good Melee good Range Self buffs best of all worlds. Once you make some friends and get into a guild you should have no problem getting every item you want to uberize your ranger.

I surely hope you come to my cluster (Tintagel) so I can eat you with my scout mauahahaha

The Epic Edition box includes all of the expansions. I know, I just picked it up at CompUSA for $16.

I'd be surprised if you could buy any other edition then the epic addition, which has all the expansions, but after the original release, the following expansions were released

Shrouded Isles
Trials of Atlantis
Catacombs
Darkness Rising

you don't need them all to play (I think ToA is minimum you can get now), but you can't go to the Catacombs or DR areas without those expansions. you can however use the gear from them (if someone lists it on a merchant and you purchase). The cost per month does not go up by having the added expansions, so really, unless $19 is a huge sum of money for you, go ahead and buy the expansions (if you only have the ToA version). You can download the expansions from the Camelot Herald, but I would think the version you purchased already has everything.

Try Gareth. It is classic (does not include TOA, thank the Lord.) It is incredibly friendly at least on the Hib side. It is a GREAT RvR server at all levels. Send a hello to me if you decide to go there.
