There's been much speculation about it, and nobody's brought this point up, but server transfers and player distribution was addressed in the last live stream.

From the official forum:
Quote:
Q46: How will the worlds from 1.0 be separated with the shift to global data centers?

A46: During Beta Test phase 3, we are planning to have players choose worlds like the world transfer in 1.0. At that time we plan on releasing information on which world will be connected to which data center.

So it would seem that 1.0 players of all shapes and sizes will have an option to switch servers before launch.

Except usually when he says it, it's followed by terrible news. I was bracing for the worst. Smiley: eek

Personally I don't like it. I want to be on a server with absolutely NO legacy players. I don't want to see anybody rubbing their Goobue mounts in my face if I can't have one, too. Smiley: bah

I know a few legacy members that don't have Goobues. But Buy in large, Goobues aren't a very favored mount anyways.

I don't think so. It's difficult to get all the information from that quote, as its only answering how legacy players (and servers) are being handled since there will be more data centers. I would wait until they announce more info come Phase 3.

I'm guessing that there will be both legacy and fresh servers linked to an NA data center, and Legacy players will have option to either stay on their server (probably linked to a data center in Japan), or to transfer to a specific server linked to an NA data center. However, there will still be fresh servers that will not allow Legacy players to transfer their characters over. I may be projecting a bit, but that's how I think it should be. For example, NA servers will be Ifrit and Shiva. Ifrit accepts Legacy transfers, while Shiva is a fresh server and does not accept any transfers whatsoever.

I'm not against seeing people ride their Goobbue's, but I am against being at disadvantage against players who will be Lv50 as soon as they log-in.

I understood that. I was just curious why it would be an issue for anyone when it's an announcement about beta and not launch.

Legacy players will be able to switch between legacy servers is how I interpreted it. They already confirmed that there will be fresh servers where legacy players cannot transfer to.

Because the question asked isn't about Beta, its about how the old servers are being split apart for Legacy players who want to play on a server with a data center in the US. Unless I've misunderstood, it impacts launch just as much as Beta.

lol Goobues are fun for a little bit, but then get old. I didn't like using mine because it's big ol booty would cover up my entire screen. I couldn't see where I was going. It's fun to get more mounts to see which fits your personality better, but so far nothing beats the trusty chocobo.

Camera distance is much improved in ARR, no more goober butts in your face I think.

I think we need to take some player initiative and sort out NA servers into east coast / west coast as soon as we can. Nothing bites more than living in Atlanta and ending up on a server where the majority of players are in the Bay Area and Oregon. Smiley: frown

It'll have to be a placeholder to start since we don't know server names yet Smiley: lol

But sure, I'll start a thread and I'll do my best to maintain it as well.

Didn't I read that SE was going to do that? Have servers on east and west coasts of the US? Or is it just some nebulous "NA" server list that could be located anywhere?

As far as I know the only promise was to have "regional" servers - NA, EU, and JP/Asia. There was no specific promise to have data centers in specific time zones.

Which probably means "NA" means "California." Great..

California works for me. :) However, I've played games with data centers from all over the US, at worst, I get maybe 100ms connected to the East Coast. It's not that bad.

Either way, you'd have to assume that you'd get a lower ping than you would with a server that's in Japan.

I suppose it's going to have to be something we test during beta stages. "Do regional servers make that much of a difference?"

Thousands of miles definitely make a difference, though it does heavily depend on how the client-server relationship is set up. I can live with a 150ms ping (I won't like it, but I'll live with it), but a 750ms ping is wholly unacceptable.
