It's funny how varying the opinions are on each FF.

-VII for me was fantastic, though the story at times was bad, mostly due to horrible localization. I've played through it several times and have done everything that needed to be done in that game.

-VIII was highly forgettable, I hated the story, the junction system, the style, everything about it was bleh.

-IX was ok, but again a highly forgettable plot. It had the look of an old school FF game, just not to the feel to it.

-X I actually enjoyed quite a bit, story, gameplay, style...cept maybe Wakka. Was one of the better ones in recent memory.

-X-2 Saw the intro and ejected the disc. I've heard it's really not bad, but I just can't do it.

-XII I got to the final dungeon and couldn't bring myself to finishing it. First FF where I really didn't give a damn for any of the characters, or the battle system, or anything.

-XIII I'm approaching the end to this one and just recently picked it back up (yup, I started playing on release). It's really not as terrible as everyone makes it out to be and I do want to finish it. Once you read up on everything the log offers, combined with the decent battle system, it's really not a bad game. The linearity hurts it, that being said, I didn't mind it too much in X.

-XIII-2 I'm about half way through, need more time with it.

-XIII-3 Haven't tried it yet.

-Type-0 HD First FF I actually beat in one weeks time in a LONG time. If you can get past the fact that it's a 2011 PSP game, it's damn fun with a decent plot (that unfortunately comes to fruition with a 2nd play through and some reading in their logbook).

Always makes me laugh when people argue which is best when it's all a matter of personal taste. I've heard heaps of praises for VIII, IX which to me were dreadful. Then people think I'm nuts for enjoying VII as much as I did.

I think I've pretty much kinda given up on the Final Fantasy series since about FF9 or thereabouts.

We're in the same boat on that one. IX was the last single player FF title I truly enjoyed. I did like X, but not enough to finish it. It wasn't until X-2 that my faith in SE took a sharp downturn. XII was different but I couldn't really get into it.

They said it purely depends on how the situation is after ending support for the PS2/360 version, SE may even decide to actually fund XI so they can do real development on it. Considering how popular mobile game is in Asia, it is a wise move in general, but it also could have been spent towards revamping XI on PC in areas that need it

Seems like they're going the wrong way, but it makes sense considering it's a lot more popular in that region. I'm curious what the ratio of JP to NA players is. It seems that since support for EU has already been abandoned that it's not as popular. What doesn't make sense is that the PS2 version which is also being dropped used to be much more popular in Japan.

On the topic of FF in general, I feel that overall they have a solid catalog. I don't personally care for much of anything post Y2K(single player anyway) but I still have all my old consoles and frequently revisit the titles I did enjoy. I think my comfort zone for RPGs is a decent balance of story and style leaning more toward ATB style combat strategy rather than action-based hack and slash.

Guess I'll take some time to finish up X and XII for the sake of it. Not much else exciting other than waiting patiently for Project Phoenix.

I just checked and the PC game files for XI are still only 12 GB in size. You won't be able to run XI on a bare cell phone, but if you have a very recent iPhone or Android with a 16GB SSD micro card, it'll work.

But I really doubt they'll have the entirety of the game on your phone, since the game itself was built for 56K and with broadband Internet, you can get away with download the zone data on a per area basis instead of recreating it and rendering it from the game's storage.

The downside of that is it might be fairly easy to hit your data cap if you play a lot.

I think I've pretty much kinda given up on the Final Fantasy series since about FF9 or thereabouts.

FF7 was awesome in gameplay and not too shabby in storyline (though I don't worship it like some people do...), but the graphics were kinda horrible compared to 8 and 9.

FF8 had this wonky system I really really did not like (the whole junction thing, the removal of armor, how they handled weapons), the whole farming for magic and how long it took constantly Drawing magic out of enemies got old fast and really detracted from the experience. The storyline and music was good though!

FF9 I think was the last "awesome" FF game, sadly. They kept mostly true to the old Final Fantasy games in the terms of gameplay -- tried and true ATB system, tried-and-true magic/MP system, though the "learn new spells from equipment" was a bit new, but the concept wasn't; it kinda had an Esper-like feel to it, only there were actual balancing limits this time around (rather than everybody can be anything and know every spell in FF6).

FFX had an OK story, the combat wasn't too bad, I actually rather liked the idea of having time to plan your moves, but the Sphere Grid system was kinda a black mark for me. I didn't like it all that well, and I really really REALLY disliked the whole "you have to swap in everybody on every fight or someone starts falling behind". That got really old, having to switch in every single party member on every single battle to keep everybody caught up, just so they could take at least 1 action per battle. If it hadn't been for that, I could have enjoyed that game a lot more.

X-2, meh. I didn't really like where that one went. They went back to ATB which was cool and they put a nice spin on it, but I really didn't like the theme of it and some of the minigames (the massage... ugh.....) just didn't say "Final Fantasy" to me.

FFXI and XIV I won't talk about for obvious reasons: they are MMOs.

FF12, the storyline was kinda 'meh'... it wasn't bad, but it didn't strike me as anything particularly good either. I didn't really like the Gambit system; I felt it kinda cheapened the game that you could program the game to play for you, and the free-roam thing, and the farming aspect of it made it feel more like an MMO that was played Single-player than anything.

FF13 and 13-2 I have on my Steam, but I haven't gotten around to doing them yet, but I've heard that at least 13 is ridiculously linear, where you're basically limited to one singular path to take.

It seems Technology caused SE to get distracted from what made Final Fantasy awesome -- we used to have great storylines (FF4 is still one of my favorites!), the battle was fun and not overly complicated but yet allowed choices (though they got ridiculous with FF6 where everybody could cast every spell and by the end of the game, you had an invincible group no matter which of the gazillion characters were in your group at the time), and there were always neat dungeons to explore, locales to see, and sometimes there were side-quests and things to do off to the side.

It seems as technology marches on, they wanna make more flashy visuals during battle, they wanna make it more realistic looking, more voice acting (anyone remember Tidus's laughing scene? That's what they made Mute buttons for). I never felt in any FF leading up to and including 9, that I ever needed Voice Acting. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but meh.

I miss the old formula, but I know it isn't coming back. But then I suppose that's why someone made RPGMaker, lol.

EDIT: On that note, RPGMaker, I've seen at least one ridiculously awesome (but short) game called Skyborn (available on Steam), where you have an RPGMaker-style battle system that has actual Hate/Threat/Enmity systems built-in. I thought that was ridiculously awesome and the storyline was actually decent (if a bit short) too.

FFVII: I liked the limit break and materia system and awesome summons. I disliked having to push attack with no control over parameters and long summons. Story was emotional but anime at times.

FFVIII: I didn't care for this one at all. It was the second worst FF for me only being better than FFX-2.

FFIX: Liked the learning skills from gear concept and active time system, everything else was kind of boring to me.

FFX: Best FF since FF7 in my opinion. Only thing I didn't like was annoying audio voice overs.

FFX-2: Worst FF ever to me, no comment.

FFXII: Liked Basche. Bland, trying to be similar to FFXI but fails in comparison. I really dislike auto attack in every game besides FFXI so I don't know what it does different. Story wasn't high adventure or emotion like typical Final Fantasies.

FFXIII: Way better than people give it credit for. Probably the most rounded well developed FF since FFX. Had a well fleshed out lore and tutorial(should have been optional 20hrs). Combat very basic starting out, but there is some depth when you get into more difficult fights where auto mode wasn't usable. Very slick and pretty interface. Best story out of the FFXIII trilogy.

FFXIII-2: Liked pokemon hunter and the ATB system here. Story confused the hell out of me with all the time travelling. You can tell less development went into the game but it has more tangibility/interactivity than it's predecessor.

FFXIII-3: I am going to say this has the deepest combat of any offline FF, just a shame you can only control one character. The story is weird to me on this one. And I do not like LIghtning as much as I did in the first XIII.

FFXV: The combat looks freaking awesome. I think the story is going to be good from what I can tell. This game is going to turn out in one of two ways to me.

1.If it turns out like Dragon Age Inquisition or FFXII(time padded/mmo centric things like gathering, etc), then I will probably care less about this game.
2.If it has lots of story within the world and for characters, it will probably be one of my favorite FF.

In X, I was enjoying the story up until the final dungeon. I got all the way up to the final boss (not counting the battle you cannot lose) and the difficulty spike was just ridiculous.

I was having a mildly challenging time with a couple of the previous bosses and then there's this brick wall in front of me, where you've got the boss and his two little helpers, one of which almost out-heals my DPS. Finally get that down and he..... resurrects it.

Oh, that's cute.

So I guess I gotta grind grind grind grind my eyeballs out (in annoying battles where I have to have everybody in the party take at least 1 action every battle?) when it seems like nothing gives very good AP? lol. That's BoF4 syndrome right there. Get through the game fairly comfortable and WHAM, the last dungeon floors you with a ridiculous difficulty spike and nothing gives any good XP to actually get stronger on. I don't know why game devs love doing this in some games, it really does kill the mood.

There's the extra mobs at the place where the guy makes mobs, but those are ridiculously strong until you get "high enough" to actually kill the stupid things, and the "ultimate" weapons... some of them are just ludicrous to obtain (jump lightning 300 times in a row or some-crap? no thanks).

So yeah, lost interest and never did see the end of it.

If you're not interested in grinding, you could have just had Rikku mix a Trio of 9999 and call it a day (although you wouldn't necessarily have known what items you need to do that, or what it even does, if you haven't played around a lot with trying to find Mix combinations)

It's actually how people have completed things like No Sphere Grid runs. The Trio of 9999 is frankly so overpowered that many people don't even find the "NSG" game enough of a challenge, needing to add on other things like "no Mix" or "no Overdrives" conditions to give themselves a sufficient challenge.

Regarding the Yu Pagodas specifically, rather than trying to kill them (not only do they endlessly auto-revive, they also revive with more and more HP because their max HP increases to however much damage it took to kill them), it's better to just cast Slow/Slowga on them.

Yeah, this was indeed before I started looking crap up on gamefaqs, and never really messed with Mix that much. I eventually forgot about the whole thing, went to other games and a few years down the line, I made another attempt at it, but again got side-tracked like 2/3rds of the way through the game and that was that, lol.

I'll just add it to the pile of games I never did finish, right along with BoF4 (I used a friend's overpowered save file to see the end, but never completed it myself) and a few others.

And now with all TVs being widescreen, and the PS2 and before being locked to 4:3 and the fact widescreen TVs seem to suck at properly displaying 4:3... well.... I only got one 4:3 TV left and it's starting to get problems, lol.

Bravely Default definitely felt weird when you could change the difficulty, enemy encounter rate and how fast the battles would go. If you got stuck at a fight you could increase the random encounters and invrease the battle speed up to 4x or something.

The correct place to grind at the end of X isn't the final dungeon area just before Yu Yevon, but Omega Ruins. I think I spent about 5 or so hours there just grinding, trying to max out the Sphere Grid.
