The funny thing with the unlocking of Jedi. You are either force user or not. Its not a hard concept.

Don't know why you bumped this post, but tehres only one thing that needs to be said, its a videogame, if it followed every little thing to the letter there would be nothing interesting, including not being able to be a stormtrooper.

I have a horrible feeling TOR will be a success because of the Star Wars name but outside that I think it looks rather disappointing, that being said I expect TOR to be most damaging to WoW and not SWG.

that must be some kind of a record, 1.17 words per month, we should call the world records book.

This game takes place during the Galactic civil war. Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine supposedly hunted down the Jedi and exterminated them. To that effect, every Jedi that survived, went into hiding. Darth Vader sent out bounty hunters to find any Jedi that might have remained and if found, went out personally and killed them. That was his mission. So to make them a starting class not only was a major betrayal of the TRUE story that George Lucas wrote and clarified that the Jedi were thought to be extinct,(Yoda said himself that Luke and Leia were the last), but it discredited all those that worked the year long process to unlock the class before the major "change". I played Galaxies for three years, two of which were spent getting him to Jedi master. Before the "change" Jedi were secretive, you knew they were there but rarely saw them, because in using their saber or powers, it let every BH within a ten sytem area, know exactly where they were. Yes Jedi are cool, yes they are an integral part of the SW universe. However, even they have their place in the story. In the story they were not an everyday thing. This has nothing to do with the PVP or BG's or anything else of that nature. To be true to the TRUE SW story and it's Lore, Jedi should not be a starting class. Period. End of story.

I'll never forgive them for removing Teras Kasi.

I've got a lot of fond memories of back in the days (way back, btw) when I used to play SWG. Ah, those were some good times. I could spend all day just sitting on Dantooine, buffing people who were about to go out and exploit-group for fat xp gains.

I knew this girl who was an Image Designer, or whatever the name of that class was. She chose it because of the fun factor. I remember seeing a Jedi take on groups of people on Dantooine and thinking "Wow! I'd love to be able to do that!" seeing the Jedi class as the imbalanced fighter it was in the movies (no doubt about it, the class was supposed to be way overpowered).

The many months of grinding professions only to have it all be replaced by the Village thing. The many months of grinding in the Village only to be shafted so immensely by this sudden urge to make all MMO's look just like World of Warcraft.

I've played the game once in a while since then, but it just doesn't stick anymore. There's no social chit-chatting on Dantooine while people stand in line to get buffs, because buffs are a hollow shell of what they used to be. If I walk into a cantina, there's no troupé of Entertainers and those Image Designers, or w/e their names are, waiting to chat with you and have some fun.

And yes, of course I had to try out a Jedi. I quite before reaching level 20 or so.

This game takes place during a time in the story where Jedi and Sith are extremely rare and Jedi are hunted without mercy throughout the galaxy. It just doesn't feel like that anymore. At all.

Which is why the game lost its appeal to me. It's a WoW clone with a Star Wars facade and very outdated graphics. I don't see why I should play it anymore.

Heard they're making a new Star Wars MMO, though. Might have to check that one out.

the new starwars game will be more of a guildwars in space, kind of thing. its adventure based, which is a good idea, with central hubs/planets as the 'meeting' areas for group formings etc, everything else takes place in instances much the same setup as guildwars. there are quite a few other things that im not that keen on, as im not a big fan of guildwars either, but if you like guildwars you'll probably like the bioware game when it comes out.

I am still hoping for good things from Bioware but I have to admit the more I see of the game the less hopeful I am that it will be game of great depth and the more resigned I become to the idea of an instanced hack and slash single player game masquerading as an MMO.

I don't know it seems odd to me that players left SWG in droves when they tried to remove the depth and make it more WOW like and here Bioware are making a Star Wars game with even less depth.

its not that surprising really, bioware always have been a rpg story driven game developer, the 'MMO' descriptive is probably misleading though, as its more properly defined as a multiplayer online - which by the way, is what guildwars is also. i've known for a while now that the game they are developing isnt a replacement for SWG, i doubt really that anything ever will be, even my hopes of startrek online being a good game have taken a beating :(
just for a change of pace ?? i've recently started playing vanguard again... we need some new, better games to be released, or at least, i do, im kind of bored or disappointed with the currently available selections :( another cue for bashing SOE over SWG, but honestly, if the nge had never happened i'd still be playing that game :( rather than this on, off, on, off again can't be bothered to log in anyway, kind of thing....

I agree however I think that game developers are confused over the idea of "new and better", seems to that game developers see this as meaning more like WoW while players see it as games with depth.

It has always amazed me that ever since the days of EQ1 I have heard all the hype from game companies about how their MMO is the "Next Generation MMO" when in reality it is just a dumbed down clone of the current most popular MMO, in all this time only SWG has come close to creating the level of depth in gameplay that the first big MMO had (Ultima Online) and even they then lost the nerve and went off on a WOW tangent.

Funny I quit swg a year ago after playing since week 1. Those on Bria may remember my town Sweet Water on Dantooine. After a year I find another kill off jedi topic front page here. What REALLY crippled SWG wasnt Jedi, it was the macroing and defense stacking, and the devs wasting a year of updates to the jedi bh wars and 2 new combat systems in 6 months. I hope the next company that does star wars online doesnt repeat those mistakes....

if your looking for immersion and continuity you should just watch the movies. a MMO based on a movie is garunteed to butcher the story line of the movie. if you just take SWG for what it is- a game- and forget about the movie its actually more fun, because the contradictions and continuity failures are endless, with tons of jedi being only one of them. its a dead horse anyway, besides theres all kinds of ways now u can make your jedi stand out from the crowd of robe wearing glow stickers. if u can't stand seeing all kinds of jedi don't play one yourself, and stay out of high traffic areas. and i'm no jedi i'm a spy since dec. 05. -IMO

i think the original problem was the balancing issues and the buff problems.. which rather comically, seem to have resurfaced yet again, pvp still seems to be a battle of the buffs. still, who knows what will happen in the next 6 months, maybe they'll put in another fix and it will make everyone happy ;D

I always thought it was kind of a no win situation if you take it from one extreme to the other (as far as the jedi are concerned). If you make it too hard to aquire one then people who want that class and nothing else lose interest. All though making too easy then the game becomes Star Wars: Jedi instead of Galaxies... hehe.

I much prefer a more inbetween approach where it's difficult to "discover" the jedi class and much more difficult to level but not so difficult as to make everyone lose interest.

That being said I'm guessing nothing will change... lol.

On a slightly different way of thinking I wonder if SOE (in regards to SWG) has maybe made the game too easy to play... that has been the death of other games imo.

Well anyway ... good gaming all.
