having read some of the previous posts, it looks like anyone trying to install the game on a vista machine, needs to make sure that it has the following;

a, admin rights
b, installed in xp compatability mode.

the more and more i hear about vista, the gladder i am that i dont have it :D

sorry...was away for a day.
I am using xp home.
i have tried the swg forums to see if they had a solution but all i found is many other people having the exact same problem.
I then tried the 'chat' with the tech guy who was nearly useless. I used msconfig to turn off all programs in the startup cycle. it didn't work either so it is not avg or zonelabs causing the problem.
Still not sure why it crashes at exactly the same spot. Even tried downloading it again just to see if it was an error in the download and it crashes at the exact same spot again.
oh..and i agree with your assessment of vista...no one i know that has it likes it. glad i stuck with xp.

tech guys are always useless.

i had a tech guy for my internet, that kept telling me to use a shorter phone cord to resolve my problem, despite the fact i told him it worked fine for 4 years.

sorry, dont know anything, just wanted ot share

Ooo, shorter phone cord, I got to remember that one.

Or, better yet "You're not on wireless? Well, that's your problem, because you know, the physical line creates friction, which will slow down the transmission - hence, your connection is slow and faulty. Wireless is friction free. You really ought to upgrade..."

I would take offence to the statement that tech guys are always useless, but too many of them actually are.

Just to point out a little mathematical axiom = absolutes are almost always false (or are never true. I know, same thing, but different connotation.)

Personally, I like to say that absolutes are always false - because I think that such a statement upsets the space-time continuum somewhere.

Of course, I'm of the opinion that if they are useless, they aren't really techies. They are simply wannabees.

Zone Alarm has a service call True Vector....when you disable the firewall True Vector stays active. Any blocked programs stay blocked. Zone alram while being a very popular firewall causes many problem with many programs...try pulling the firewall off all together....you may also want to do a winsock fix

netsh winsock reset catalog<----in the DOS prompt

Zone Alarm has a habit of corruptng this file. the Winsock or Windows Socket is easliy corrupted by security programs. This set of files controls the access to the internet for the computer. You still didn't say if you re-installed direct-x or your graphic drivers, just becaues they worked for the last 4 yrs dosen't mean something didn't update and change the settings on your PC...Windows, AVG and Zone Alarm all do this let alone any spyware programs and registry protection like Spybot, Norton, and Ad-Aware.

Thats what I got so far.....keep posting info here and I will have more for you.

I'm having the same problem on Vista, however I have attempted the above solutions to no success. Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Ha Ha...sorry my bad.
Ok...this is probably listed in greater detail in some other posts but basically i downloaded the files using the new 'beta' loader from soe. but in order to run the game i had to follow a set of instruction to take the old launcher and set it up the way i guess it used to be before some of the 'enhancements' soe made to their launcher.
So to correct the downloading problem (stall at file patch09.tre) you use the new beta which fixes the error in that file but you need the old launcher to run it as there is still soem problem with the beta launcher running the program. In the end i spoke with 3 different guys at the tech desk all of whom had no idea how to fix it but instead of admitting that they had me changing all sorts of settings that took me a while to get back to normal.
Now i am up and running and made lvl 10 in a few hours. Not much interaction yet with others as i have been on the first space station but i am hoping to meet up with people when i get to tatooine.
Now i need to find a mentor who can instruct a new guy.
Thanks again for the help. See you in game.

Where do I get this 'beta' loader you speak of? And what exactly do I change in the old launcher?
#14 Jan 27 2008 at 9:23 PM Rating: Decent
These are the exact steps i used and it worked for me....im on xp though so i'm not sure if this works for vista too....

Downloaded old launchpad at: http://patch.station.sony.com:7000/...l_LaunchPad.exe

Go to your Launchpad folder, C:\Program Files\Sony\Station\Launchpad. Right click on launchpad.exe and choose send to --> desktop.
Next, create a folder in C:\Program Files called StarWarsGalaxies
(i actually used d: but it made no difference)

Go to your desktop, right click on that icon and choose properties.

In the target box, enter this exactly with quotes and all: "C:\Program Files\Sony\Station\Launchpad\Launchpad.exe" /game:starwars

In the Start in box, put this in, quotes and all: "C:\Program Files\Star Wars Galaxies"

Click on Apply, then Close.

I downloaded the beta at : http://launcher.station.sony.com/features.vm becuase i was told you have to use the beta version to download.
But the fix on the official forums says you can download using the old launchpad with those changes above.

Either way once you have the old launcher set up like above or the new beta you can download. Then i had to use the old launcher to run the program...new one hangs up.
Hope this helps.

Are we talking about the install here, because I downloaded the trial files and everything, but it still stalls at Patch_9.tre.

Home xp, video card up to date.

Got it to work, only now, it won't startup on either launcher. It says that .asi and .ftl files aren't readable, and it says the graphics won't initialize though I reinstalled and fixed Direct X.

I ended up installing the beta station launcher and installed the trial through that.

After you installed the game there a file called TREFix.exe that can scan through game files to see if any of them are corrupt.

It just says that .flt and .asi files aren't windows files.

I had the exact same problem. try downloading from fileplanet website.

So is downloading the Beta Launcher the only way you can get the game to install if you are getting the catastrophic failure messages?
