Trying to get friends to playFollow

I am now a loyal resident of Middle Earth. Apart from transferring my character to Meneldor so that I could socialize with fellow Alla-ites, there is so far not that family feeling I had with my guild in WoW. I've been actively trying to get some of my friends to join me.

Friend #1: The WoW Buddy

Last summer, I met a guy at work who also played WoW at the time. We started chatting a lot, and decided that he would create a character on my PvP server, and we would level together. This we did, and both had a blast.

After switching to LOTR, I convinced him that he should use my buddy key and come play as well. He was amazed with the graphics, and seemed to like the game, but decided that real life needed higher priority. As a result, he has cancelled all MMO subscriptions. Alas.

Friend #2: The WoW Raiding Chum

I met this guy when I joined my first lv 70 guild. He, myself, and a few other ran instances exclusively together for weeks getting ready for Kara and beyond. Once in Kara, we were always in the same groups, and had a blast working on that for a few months as well. He even came down with his wife and son for a visit and to sight-see earlier this year.

He has gotten really bored of WoW as well, so I convinced him to pick up a copy of the game. This past weekend, he finally did. So far, it's been a struggle. He is used to all his fancy add ons, including quest mods that put a big flashing arrow on your screen pointing you to the exact location of quest objectives.

He has grown so dependent on these mods, that he is pretty much useless otherwise. Playing consists of him clicking through all quest texts, waiting for me to accept the quests as well, and then letting me read to find out where to go. He claims he's "never been much of a reader". He has logged in once or twice when I was not on, and claims he just stood around not knowing what to do. We are only level 10, but he is pretty much convinced he can't get into the game, and I probably don't have many chances left to convince him to stay. Alas.

Friend #3: The Lore Geek

I met this guy about a year ago through some mutual friends. He plays table-top RPGs, is a huge Star Wars fan, and loves the LOTR series. A large group of people he knows got him somewhat into WoW, but it was too little too late, in his opinion.

After telling him about LOTRO for a few weeks, he finally decided to give it a try. So far, he is showing good signs; he likes reading all the quest text, picks things up fairly quickly, and actually shows enthusiasm for finding out what the game is all about.

Unfortunately, he is not of the MMO breed. His play sessions are infrequent and not very long, and even though he is only level 7, his main complaint is that he'd "like to see more of the story unfold". Alas.

What would you do if you were trying to get your friends to see the wonder that is LOTRO?

I had the same problem. Lots of friends in WoW, no one to play with in LotRO. I told them about it, but the response was kinda "meh". Then one by one they became disatisfied with WoW. And suddenly the core group of my friends are now in lotRO, and enjoying themselves hugely! Even my best friend who hated LotRO to start, now that he bought a bit more memory (so less lag) and is higher is actually loving his burglar!

Dunno what I can really tell ya, except to be patient and let them know that LotRO isn't really a game to be sucked down like a cold beer on a hot day. It worked for me. The free trial got the friends who didn't want to come to come, and the game itself sold itself to them, and time and a little leveling convinced the other than there was something way more interesting than just DPSing to learning to play his burglar (he was used to a WoW rogue).

Take some screen shots (sans UI) at the best resolution your machine can handle. Then show them. I would bet that might perk their interest.

Yeah, I did that. That's what got them to log on at all, so far!
