AoC - a new very promising MMO (releases within a few weeks)Follow

#1 Apr 27 2008 at 11:26 PM Rating: Sub-Default
Hi everyone,
I am abit boored about WoW and want something new.

I shall soon start playing another very promising MMO that will be released within a few weeks ... Age Of Conan!

I have to say the graphic looks fantastic and the combat is heavy. It´s aimed for a more adult audience. More violence and sexy than WoW which is a game more for kids.

I saw a movie before about the mounted combat. It looks better than anything else I have seen.

I have a friend who got the chanse to test it. It was really fun to play, even thou it´s not released yet. But I count that it will continue to be improved the comming monthes even more.

Look at this ingame trailer!

http://www.gamespot.com/video/extras/ageofconan.html?sid=6183956

I preordered the game yesterday to be able to start a few days before the release day.

See you all in Hyboria ...

PS: I hope Allakhazam will support AoC, because it will become the new large MMO.

I just wonder if this site will have a forum for AoC too.

As I said I am abit tiered of WoW, where the mobs look like dolls.

I'm a bit tired of your presence, and you've only made two posts.

Whether or not we have a section devoted to AoC depends on quite a few things, mostly the developer of that game more than anything. We will see what happens...

Oh, and AoC is a new MMO, it is almost certainly doomed to failure when compared with WoW, just like LoTR and such.

And why is that?

Doomed to failure? You don't even know what the developer and publisher goals are, and if you do then you have an inside track that no one else here does. Depending on development and support costs, the game could be a complete success with 5% (or even less) of the subscribers that WoW has. Success = makes money. Failure = the game folds and drifts into the night.

I suggest wearing a tinfoil hat to keep future visions from recurring. While they may or may not work for that purpose, they will certainly block the Blizzard mind control lasers that you have been subjected to. They may even prevent you from making silly statements in the future, although I tend to have my doubts.

You really have no idea what you're talking about, do you?

Read some previews. The game has potential. It has a lot of unique ideas. Finally, it is being produced by FunCom, who have been running AO for the past 6 years.

When you say "compared with WoW," do you mean in terms of raw subscription numbers? Because many MMOs have been extremely successful, from both a gameplay perspective and a financial perspective, with playerbases of ~300,000 to 500,000.

Personally, I'm very excited to see if the game lives up to its incredible potential.

Ya. You're right. It is one of the top 200 most visited sites on the internet, and it's trying to bolster traffic spamming a forum ...

Something does need to come along in the near future that gives WoW a good amount of competition. Maybe deflate Blizz a little and more then anything get the fanboys to STFU.

Try Vanguard, the game was dead before it was ever released.

I want Bethesda to come out with a Daggerfall/Oblivion style MMO. Complete class customization in a truly go anywhere do anything type of world.

A programming nightmare but an idea with massive potential.

My head hurts just thinking about a game like that...

Make a mass effect MMO. That would be full of win.

Cookie Cutter "perfect" classes would quickly emerge.

I love the idea in theory, but without some pure balancing genius, it wouldn't work.

Remember UO? That was an open skill-based classless game. Yet all of the power players had the same skills, the same weapons, and the same tactics. There were so many possibilities, but people figure out what works best, and everyone else sees it and copies it ...

There are a couple of non-class based MMOs coming out in the next few years. I think Chronicles of Spellborn and Earthrise fall under that category.

My comment was based purely on the fact that most MMOs fail. It wasn't meant to be offensive to anyone but the OP, who's AoC trumps all attitude was unfounded and frankly a bit annoying. And yes, I was talking in raw subscription numbers or raw income. Outside Asia WoW is by far the biggest in that regard, and all MMOs since have failed to match that level of success, even though they are financially successful when compared to pre-WoW MMOs and in their own right.

An odd argument for why it will be a success, Jord :P

Unrelated note, I have read previews, checked the talent trees (feat trees, whatever) and a few youtube vidoes of PvP combat maps from a beta player. The game seems very hardcore compared to WoW and that is one of the other reasons I doubt it'll be as successful as WoW. But, anyway, as Douglas Adams said, predicting the future is a mug's game.

So does Darkfall (lol never coming out), although you can teach your character a restrictive job (and unlearn it later) if you want.

Agreed, however thats not really any different from the predefined classes of most MMOs. The difference would be in the players who think outside the box and don't follow the perfect cookie cutter builds.

Adding a type of +/- stat to the different types of abilities would increase the amount of cookie cutter builds available.

I'm not saying it would be easy, I'm simply saying the potential is worth the effort.

When ever a new game comes out there must be a fanboi thumbwar!! Epic were the battles between WoW and FFXI. Tame were the battles with LoTRO. Sad and humorous were those whimpers of Vanguard.

Where will Conan fit in? I'm not sure yet but a freind at work who bought the early release said you can't solo past 20. Which is scary. It would take a whole lot of boobies and blood to get me to want to head to another Valcruum dunes to pull the same goblins to the same camp jus to level up again.

We will see.....

Ohh and reading the OP is like watching a football player talk about his favorite cereal by reading off a teleprompter.

You're an idiot.

I need to apologize. It seems I had it incorrect. Level 1-20 is solo and is instanced, apparently, but you are not forced to group after that. I'm getting the info second hand from a freind at work so I apologize for the inaccuracy.

here is a link to a bbc article from yesterday about AoC, it doesn't sway me in anyway, though the short video of the siege pvp battles looks cool.

the minimum spec is scary though, my little laptop wouldnt be able to handle it while i can play wow no probs.

3 reasons why AoC will not challenge Wow.

1. Stupidly high requirements, the Vanguard problem. the reason WoW has 8 million players is because the average joe with an average PC can play it on top whack and pretty much could from release.

2. Hideously bad combat system, 6 hours of that and you'll need a visit to the doctors, gore mode will become boring after a week and any lag will stop you being able to effectivly play (see point 1).

3. No mid or long term playability apart from PvP, no PvE raids etc.
