Possible new player has crafting questionsFollow

#1 May 12 2008 at 2:55 PM Rating: Excellent
I have been skimming some information about LoTRO and I have been considering joining. I have played Ultima Online and Final Fantasy XI before so I am familiar with online games.

My questions are as follows:
1. How viable is crafting in this game? Is there a market for player made goods or are players self sufficent?

2. Are you required to kill monsters for certain drops to make items?

3. How stable is the game on dial-up?

4. Which server has the most active player-base?

1: Still trying to figure that out myself, it seems some crafts have more of a need than others.

2: Yes/No, they drop "trophies" which help you "crit" the item (Think HQ in FFXI terms)

3: Wait that still exists? God I'd hate to patch the new books on dial-up. But the game box does say 56k on up.....

4: No idea, there is a fairly large number of us on Melendor in the "un-official" Alla Kinship TiNFS.

1. Crafting is much easier in this game than FFXI and more profitable.

2. Yes and no.

3. lol Probably okay.

4. I hear Brandywine is the most populated.

Yeah, the last couple nights when I've logged in the Brandywine server has had a wait. It seems to be the only one.

A few more questions:
What is the "Founder's Referral" that I am seeing mentioned?
Who effective is burglar in group and solo play?
Is Hunter an expensive class to work? I know in FFXI Ranger could be very expensive.
How well do food items sell on the AH?

I ordered the game from ebgames.com this morning so I expect to have it by Friday.

Founder's referral is pretty much someone who played the game since beta (or launch? not 100% sure) referring you to the game. I think you get to pay the founder's monthly fee, as opposed to the regular (9.99/month instead of 14.99/month)

Burgs are good both solo and in groups. Don't get me started on burglars in MP... *counts to 10 and takes a deep breath while riddled*

You don't have to buy ammo in LOTRO. You get an unlimited supply, so long as you have a bow equipped. They do have to spend money on traveling rations for most of their quick-travel skills, however, but that cost is probably countered by the fact that their repair bills are generally lower (due to ranged fighting, most normal mobs will die before they get to you, and Desperate Flight if you're about to die)

I don't pay attention to the AH prices much anymore, since PvE has kinda bored me to death.

For a good idea of what all the pricing options mean, now to get them, and what you can and cannot do with them, go here: http://www.digitalbackspin.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7010

As for Burglars, they are very very effective in a group. In PvE and PvP both. In fact many PvP players complain burgs are 'god mode'.

I played a 75 RNG in FFXI and am now a 50 Hunter in LOTRO. There is no comparison. Hunter is far far less expensive, and also more deadly. The biggest recurring expense you will have is travel rations. Hunters can travel, solo or in take their whole group, to about 9 fixed locations and 1 player selectable location in the world. So if you work that in with your home point ability you have pretty quick access to nearly a dozen locations in the world, 10 of which you can take your whole party to as well. Each location requires a different number of rations from 1-5. They stack to 50 and cost 100 silver per stack. I usually carry 2-3 stacks on me at any given time just to be sure I don't run out.

Food sells reasonably well. Certain potions sell better. Especially hope tokens and morale/power potions.

Population wise Brandywine is the most populated but recently some people have been complaining it's overpopulated. Long waits to log in, too much competition for resources, and massive lag in the main cities. Ther are some rolling new characters on other servers to see if they're better, then moving their characters off brandywine to avoid those problems.

Thanks for all the responses.

I guess I'm going to try out Hunter and Burglar both once I start the game to see which I like best.

Also another question:
Is LoTRO like FFXI where you pay a flat rate and then an additional amount per character?

Nope, Lotro is just a flat fee every month, no extra charges. Unless you want a name change/server transfer.

Just my 2c.

I recently started a burglar, and LOVE it. But, like most classes in the game, it did't really get cool until level 15. Most classes are like that (15-25, depending on class). Your first trek to 20 will take a bit. Your second will FLY. Don't be afraid to commit a little time to make sure you do/do not like something.

I do wish the game had a little bit more.... umph... right up front, more like other games do. And the elf/dwarf starting area is a bit sloppy, and a bit of a drag.

Honestly, a class doesn't become its own till level 50. The smallest skill can make a class so much more enjoyable. A good example is Herb-Lore for Lore-masters. Lore-masters learn it at level 36ish, and it's one of my most used skills.

I think things will get a bit more interesting when they add those 2 new classes and start to raise the level cap. (50 is just too low.)

Thanks for all the information, I'm really looking forward to joining the game. Looks like it might be Monday before the game comes in the mail now.

Thought I would give a small update on my status. The game arrived on Friday and I have been patching the game since midnight Friday night, patching this game is horrible on dial-up. Finished the program update on Saturday afternoon and as of posting this I am over a 1/3 of the way done patching the game data.

I expect to be in game by either Wednesday or Thursday.

Yeah, a year of updates is a lot of stuff to download. But there is good news! a few days before every update Turbine offers a pre-download(What is it called again?) of the update.

5951 bottles of ale on the wall.......

90 hours later I have less than 6000 files to go. The length of time its taking to patch isn't bothering me because I have been working alot lately and I find it hilarious. Dial-up internet is just an exercise in patience.

Hopefully I will get to see you guys in game this week, unless that is if Bellsouth comes to tell me DSL is available after I have spent all this time downloading. If that happens I might just go crazy on the guy who tells me that.
