Favourite Areas?Follow

Just curious what everyone considers to be some of their favourite areas in LOTRO.

I'm partial to the castle ruins in Weathertop, northeast of Archet. I can't recall the name right now, but it's filled with elite orcs. Just being up there is awesome. I think that's my #1, with no real competition.

Aside from that, Sprigley's Cellar in the non-instanced version of Archet. It's like a mini dungeon crawl, complete with large numbers of spiders, and all kinds of twists and turns. Also, Fornost, despite how bloody long it is. Lots of fun quest rewards in there, and decent challenges for a group of players.

My favorite zone....would be a tie between Forochel and Evendim. I also like the Trollshaws....Hell I like every zone except Lonelands.

My favorite instance would be The Great Barrows I love the maze like dungeon crawl feeling, it actually reminds me of the old school dungeons, not the WoW-type style that holds your hand and leads you down a linear path.

Speaking in general zone terms:

Favorites:

The Shire: A very silly area for the genre, but perfectly appropriate in this context.

The eastern half of North Downs: The area that hooked me.

Forochel: I dig it.

Least liked:

Lone Lands: In a lot of ways it reminded me of Thundering Steppes in EQ2, which I also loathed. An area that was pretty much obligatory to play that I couldn't wait to be done with.

Ered Luin: Celondim/Duillond elf starting area. In my opinion this area is screaming for a content revamp. I ran my elf to The Shire at about level 10 in frustration. Some folks seem to love it, but I'm not one of them and couldn't see the appeal other than the look.

Most of Evendim: Annuminas and the area around Oatbarton are just fine. Maybe it was the insistence of the designers to make sure there wasn't a direct path to anything that bugged me the most. It bugs me in Angmar in some places, but I find it much worse in Evendim. Did I forget to mention the aggro deer and swimming?

Favorite quest chain:

Fireworks (The Shire) In my opinion it's one of the best chains in the game if done at the appropriate level and good enough to justify making a new alt just to do it.

I have groups of areas that I like for different reasons. I'm big on the glitz so some of the outdoor areas simply astound me at its detail. Thorins Hall is even gorgeous, those dwarves do have some flare after all.

Since early in beta, I've been in love with Tom Babaldi's place. The trees are more enhanced, the waterfalls have a nice splash to them. It's an excellent place to relax and immerse yourself.

If I'm actively killing, I prefer dungeons. Almost any dungeon will do for me. You only have to worry about certain directions, and you can keep mobs from scattering all over (mostly). Basically they have a linear format, you can only go certain ways so you dont have to worry about roaming all over a land area to look for items/mobs.

Not sure if I can pick a favorite instance. I just dont know which ones I still like. I love sitting at a pool though seeing which ones let me in solo.

Lone Lands scare the crap out of me. With all the orcs/half-orcs it reminds me of the Hills Have Eyes and I just think of all blood/killing and junk. Just makes me hate it.

Rivendell it one of my favourites. Love the trees there, and the water.

I like the 'moors as well.

For the scenery I like Rivendell. The Library's ornate leafiness is beautiful. I lag bad, for some reason though, coming across the main bridge. It's caused me to fall into the river more than once.

I like the Southern Trollshaws, it's interested scenery, fun quests and a nice variety of monsters.

My favorite dungeon has easily been CD. It's challenging and creepy and the trolls are awesome.

I've been a bit disappointed with some of the redundant structures. You can find the same side-slanting suspension bridge in just about any dungeon requiring a bridge. Many buildings and small dungeons are simply the same as others in design and lay-out. I noticed the same thing in Vanguard. Probably a dumb thing to even notice though.

Walking through the gates of Imladris the first ever time back in beta made me decide to sign up for the founder/lifetime offer there and then. Looking out from the top over Rivendell was just stunning... Went there the other day for the first time in around a year and still thought the same.

Lonelands is a pit. Kitca said it reminded him of Thundering Steppes; I've never been but it reminds me of the Overthere from EQ1. Big empty, uninteresting yellow-tan landscape full of hostile fauna. Sure, they did a great job of capturing the feel of an empty, blighted landscape but it's still boring. Plus, when I was there, it reminded me of the Overthere in another way -- full of the biggest dinks in the game. Of course these days it's pretty much deserted.

I didn't care for the elf/dwarf starting region at all and only spent a short time in Evendim, being pretty unimpressed and sick of swimming.

My favorite area so far has been the big orc/troll camp east of Estelden (or however its spelled). It doesn't start out visually stunning but the climb through the forts up to the bosses' areas is pretty impressive. Plus it has a very threatening feel to it. I was a little sad when I finished the quests in that region.

Overthere would be the EQ equivalent. I didn't develop an active dislike of that EQ zone since it seemed I was only just passing through there to get to an adjacent zone.

Although it may be completely off-lore, I'm loving Forochel and am heartbroken I'm nearly done with all the available quests there.

I love and hate the Old Forest. The music is spooky, the trees are deadly and it's impossible for me to find my way through there without taking a hundred wrong turns. Yay for immersion!

Rivendell is lovely and the Shire is tons of fun. You just can't beat the Shire for sheer number of newbie quests. Make sure to read what the npcs are saying. It can get rather amusing.

Finding Bilbo's stone trolls by accident in the Trollshaws had to be one of my favorite moments in the game.

One of my favorite parts of discovery too.

I actually enjoyed Goblin Town a lot as it really reminded me of the vision I had of the place when reading the Hobbit. Seeing Gollums cave, the troll drummers, and the maze that it is really was a fun explore.

..and the horseride down the mountain pass and through the mountains throat to GT's main entrance is pretty fun. Smiley: grin

I stumbled upon those last night myself! Very cool.

I do have to wonder why the rest of the trolls that are wandering around do not get turned to stone in the daylight....

I don't think the trolls in the Trollshaws are out in the daytime.

the ones who wander the roads are not, however there are several static spawns that are still there, dispite the fact they are in full daylight. For example, there is a series of ruins to the East-Northeast of Thorenhad that has some trolls, both within the ruins and outside the gates.

I would be fine if they were just in the ruins, as it could be explained as they're out of the light, but on the path up a cliff?

Anyway, as for my favorite areas so far (only lvl 42 and haven't made it up to Angmar or Forochel yet.) I love the atmosphere of the shire and Thorin's gate. I think that both of those areas capture the feel of their inhabitants very well. As for questing areas, I love Evendim, dispite the difficulties in navigating with that giant lake. No other area so far evokes the feeling of how far the Men of Númenor have fallen than the ruins and tombs around Lake Evendim, and the quests are well done.

I think my favorite area has to be Forochel and not just because it is the newest one. I tend to be a somewhat anti social gamer (sounds odd doesn't it) And I prefer to either fly solo, or group with people I know. I have bad experiences with PUGs normally though I am sometimes pleasantly surprised.

I love Forochel for several reasons. The zone is almost completely solo, that is so refreshing to me. There are only 4 0r 5 quests (not counting book quests) that absolutely require a group to do. Every quest practically gives you faction and the four areas of the map that give you repeatable faction quests (not bad money either) is a really nice touch. The scenery despite being "arctic" is really well done imo, I never get bored with it like I do in the lone lands or angmar. You can tell a lot of work went into this and the ice spirit Grims are probably the most beautiful mobs in the game, imho :P They are just neat to look at and can be a pain to fight if you happen to not see them coming. I love getting launched so far by them that I break a leg or (on my hunter) getting tossed so far from them I'm out of range. They're just fun to fight :P

The area I loved to hate was the Old Forest :P I could never seem to find my way in there despite being many many times. If I was trying to find my way futher in, I'd always accidentally wander out. Once I managed to find my way to where I needed to be, I could never find my way out again :P

I had forgot about the old forest. My first real challenge (and cheat) in the game was finding the flowers of the old forest - I dl'ed, and actually printed out, a map. Smiley: tongue

..and of course it's the home of Tom B. Smiley: grin
