Brawl Ranks (Not A Tier List). This is copypasta from the original thread here. This list is compiled from various tournament results. It is an empirical list that reflects how well particular characters and the various players using them performed. Understand that the popularity of a character and variances in player ability do greatly affect the list.

Characters were awarded points based on tournament performance. +1 for placing top8, +3 for placing top4, +5 for winning a tournament.

Interesting. Also interesting to look at the list with no Top 8s.

The whole tiers list (even though that isnt one) is just crap really. All the tiers lists accomplish is pointing out which characters are broken or are easily abused.

For example.

For those of you who have played me I play Lucario. From what I have read most people consider him to be 3rd or 4th tier on the fact that he isnt very easy to use and that he doesnt have any broken moves such as certain chain grabs of other charcters.

Also tiers lists just create tons of copy cat fighters that dont want to branch out into other characters which then leaves the meta game for those characters undiscovered, which leads to them being seen as sucky.

edit:lolspelling

I was initially surprised by Snake and Metaknight being top tier, even the japanese initial lists are very much in agreement with that point, but after playing around with each character some more I can mostly see it.

I knew Snake's ground game was strong, but I had thought his weaker air would hurt him more. Then I realized his air game wasn't weak, but situational.

Metaknight is simply too fast, he punishes and chases well. He's functions in my opinion similar to sheik in melee.

That's pretty much what tier lists are. They point out how easily a particular character can win. This is their purpose.

Tier lists don't create this situation. They might add to it a little, but players who are serious about playing a game will naturally gravitate to characters that they are better able to win with.

Tier lists don't create character imbalances, they only make existing imbalances more apparent.

Both of these are true but not so absolute. You would be surprised at the amount of people that will play snake and emta just ebcause they are top tier. Yes players will play who they want but their is a lot of people that will play what is "best". Look at wow and all the millions of hunters.

Also teirs list doc reate an imbalance but its not so big. Like I said top tier characters get their meta game explored more then others, which will lead to more combos, moves, and whatnot.

I find the tiers interesting but they in no way affect which characters I play. I know MK is pretty easy to play with, that's why I gravitated towards him when the game came out. And Yoshi is a bottom tier character? Well, I know a Yoshi player who will wipe the floor with anyone here (I'd give Allegory a fair chance against him though).

Some slight truth, but generally characters are high on tier lists because of what has already been explored in metagame.

There has yet to be an official brawl tier list yet we already know quite a bit. We know about canceling dash attacks into up smashes. We know about gimping tether recoveries. We know about autocanceled moves. We know about ICs and their infinite throws. We know that marth can perma grab lucas. We know a lot.

I don't think enough new techs for top tier characters are discovered simply because those characters are high on tier lists to warrant saying "tier lists create imbalance by letting top tier characters expand their metagame faster."

Tier lists are mostly a statement about the current game, with little effect on how it is played.

I never cared for the tier lists, but they don't bother me. I always kind of saw the SSB games as a game you play, find your niche character, and have a **** load of fun. :D

If there is still plenty of interest in another SSBB tournament I don't mind setting one up.

If we do set up another Alla tournament would everyone like to keep it in the same format (1v1, no items, etc.)? Or would anyone prefer to try something a little different, such as a doubles tournament, item tournament, free for all tournament, etc?

If you, or any one else, want I can be on Brawl later tonight. I need to test my new snake play, who I am only playing because he is top tier.^^
