The lack of crafting, in the sequel, makes the 2nd a bit less RPGy than the first, though.
eh, "crafting" in bioshock wasn't really much different than using the normal vending machine to buy w/e, so I didn't miss it at all.

It's looking like it's going to be a somewhat lackluster addition to the series. (I'm still going to play it of course, but...)

Where did you read it's lackluster? I haven't heard that anywhere.

I rented this game for Ps3 and so far haven't been real thrilled with it. For starters in all honesty alot of it is my lack of exp with the ps3 controller. I really felt like I had better control of aiming and movement with the 360 controller, but I can't blame the game on that. I am not very far in and all ready having a hard time keeping enough ammo up to kill everything. Drill is useless unless your right on top of an enemy (think chainsaw from doom only with limited ammo), the the rivet gun takes forever to kill anything with even if you shock them first. The story looks interesting so far though, but not quite as good as the first.

Yahtzee didn't have a favorable review of the game either, although he is typically rather harsh.

The only negative things I can see are people ******** about it's linear game play but it's a ******* JRPG, that is what they do. I for one enjoy that style, rather than being dumped into a world where I can literally do anything, I would sometimes rather have a bit of a line to follow at first and then open up later on. Everyone raves about FFX, which was incredibly linear, I don't know why FFXIII can't be forgiven for the same thing. Same with Bioshock and I assume Bioshock 2.

Anyway, back on topic, started Bioshock 2 last night, love it so far. PC for the win here, I can't aim with a controller, give me a mouse any day.

My only real complaint about it was that it seemed quite a bit shorter than the first one. Also, hacking in the first one was a lot more fun.

Read the first definition, not so much the second one Smiley: laugh

In other words, a Japanese-style role playing game, such as we are used to seeing like previous Final Fantasies, Suikoden, etc. NOT something like Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc.

No problem, I was just responding to shintasama's comment about FFXIII. I tried to re-rail at the end Smiley: smile

I figured that since, you know, my post immediately followed the one I was replying to that people would just assume that is what I was talking about. Silly me.

Edit:

Or not. Either way no feathers ruffled I suppose Smiley: blush

Hacking (especially when you're compulsive about it like me) got really, really tedious in the first one. I also thought it was stupid that I ran into soo many hacks I couldn't actually beat because of the randomization. Breaking the combat to hack was also weird.

This is what they mean by "linear"

other complaints I've heard ( haven't played yet obviously):
1)Battle system is "un-RPGy" (heard people that really like or hate it)
2)auto-battle more or less trivializes combat into a giant movie quicktime event (some people pissed at return of gambits too)
3)story is simultaneously shallow and confusing (not sure how that works)
4)last boss is dumb
5)maps are boring/predictable
6)no towns
7)gameplay:CS ratio is too low
8)no real connection to characters other than lightning(b/c they're one dimensional)
9)takes 6-10hrs for the story to go anywhere
10)takes too long before enemies become interesting/challenging
11)large numbers of enemies to fight at a time is tedious
12)etcetc

People do like to ***** though, and I'm going to play it anyways, so we'll see.

Since this topic has derailed anyways whats this about return of Gambits? Are they as important as they were in Final Fantasy 12 because that was prob the #1 thing that killed that game for me? Well that and the boring characters.... and the lame story. Ok so it wasn't the #1 thing but it was a major one.

I thought the battle system was supposed to be more like older games. You know the classic in turn based, take your time to plan a move, then execute it type of battle system? I know they all have different leveling systems and ways to equip/use magic but the turn based gameplay has worked forever.

Does it really matter? We're all going to play it regardless.

I've yet to dislike a single game in the franchise, so you're talking to the wrong guy to find a critical eye. All I know is I'll be in line at 11:45pm to get the game Monday night, and Tuesday is going to be a ***** to get through Smiley: snore

Not much can put a damper on my excitement, this game is one of the main reasons I got a PS3 (that and I wanted a blu-ray player). Who knew I'd have to wait so long for it.

Really not trying to beat a dead horse here but is this game going to be like Final Fantasy 12? If it is I don't want to waste $60 on something that I will play a couple of hours and hate. From what I read of the game it looks like a classic turn based battle system. The only game in the franchise I have not been able to tolerate is Final Fantasy 12 and the original NES versions ( I can't stand any RPG's on the old NES, nothing against Final Fantasy there). I even enjoyed Mystic Quest which was shunned by a lot of gamers at the time. When I play an RPG like Final Fantasy I want Strategy to be the key, not twitchy reflexes, or programming the toons how to play (gambits). I want to have a menu pop up for each toon, selection an option, and execute it. Every Final Fantasy game out (well minus tactics) to this date minus FF12 works this way to the best of my knowledge.

Like I said not trying to start another I hate FF12 topic, I think its pretty well known I disliked the game. But I absolute get depressed when I buy a game for $50 to $60 and end up hating it. Have read alot about this game and it really seems to check out other then the post I saw about Gambits in this thread.

WEll lol to get back on topic been playing this game a little bit more. It actually is pretty decent now that I have gotten a little ways into it. Can tell alot has been copied from the first game but really that's fine with all the changes made. Story is turning out to be very interesting. Unlike my actions in Bioshock 1 I am not harvesting any of the sisters this time around. When I played the first game I harvested 1 little sister and got my *** tore at the end of the game over it.

*minor spoiler alert*

I am at the part where you get the key from the African American women about 3 or 4 stages in. I was ready to drill her head off after the crap she talked but when I got to her I just took the key and went on. Now apparently she is helping me to a small degree. I am up to the point now where a rogue preacher is trying to sabotage my efforts.

I get the feeling the ending of this game will be just as epic as the last one. All in all an excellent rent just for the story and fun gameplay.

I think this is an excellent game to rent and play for 1 to 2 weeks and send back.
