Why no more New Game +?Follow

I've recently started playing my old PS version of Chrono Trigger again, and it made me think about the concept of RPG's and the New Game +. A lot of the older Square games have New Game +, and pretty much none of the newer ones do. The only one I can think of that does is X-2, and that was pretty much a flop as not many fans liked it (I did, but that's another thread).

I can't help but wonder why it is that games these days no longer have New Game +. It's great for adding replay value, especially with a game like Chrono Trigger where you have many different endings, which all require you to beat the last boss at different points throughout the plot. Why don't video game companies make games with these kinds of plots and implement New Game + again? I'm not saying I want a carbon copy of Chrono Trigger for every new RPG, but there has to be other creative ways to imitate what is arguably one of the best RPG's ever made. I think this is an especially valid concern considering how many people complain that video games aren't as well designed or throughout now that we have better graphics available.

I think RPGs with New Game +, even in the past, were rare.

Not many Final Fantasy games had them. Most just had abundant side quests near the end of the game. Chrono Trigger had it, Chrono Cross had it (In a way at least, you had to play the game three times through to get every character). I'm not sure if Kingdom Hearts I and II had it, I don't remember there being a New Game +.

Obviously I just listed some SE examples... but that's a lot of games.

I personally don't care for the New Game + idea. I'd much rather have a game full of content the first play through. Numerous side quests, especially near the end when you reach the final boss, being able to pause the story and go off to wrap up ends and get powerful skills, equipment, etc.

Huh? White Knight Chronicles has New Game+.

I'm not familiar with White Knight Chronicles, what system is it out for and what's it about?

You do make a valid point Tirith, it's far more important that a game have lots of fun side quests and such in general, but I do think that the New Game + is a neat feature which could be implemented successfully in newer games and make them more fun.

FF X-2 did a bad job of it unfortunately, as there were only three possible endings in that game and they were accessible based on how much of the story you completed. There were no awesome items you could get from New Game + or new sidequests, getting more of the story completed because you ****** it up the first time, or unlocking all of the skills in the dress spheres was really the only point to it in that game, and it irked me.

It's for the PS3. By the same people who did Dark Cloud.

ME1 and 2 both have it, although mostly it's just to play through the game again while starting with all your old powers, etc.

I figure they don't want you to spend that much time on a game so you will buy more?

Yeah, I think that might be a large part of it too, which really saddens me. I know video game companies are businesses and need to make money, but they should also be interested in making quality products that their customers will enjoy, not just what's going to make the most money and keep them coming back for more. Good games are going to keep customers around far more than high turnover rate of short games.

Yeah, Mass Effect is really not my type of game. I do respect soldiers to a certain extent, but I have absolutely no desire to play a game from the PoV of one. Plus I tend to prefer fantasy games to sci-fi ones as well.

My OP was mostly geared towards Square games in specific, as I am pretty sure that not many newer Square games have the New Game + feature. That was mostly because I tend to stick with RPG's and a few action/adventure games here and there. I don't know much about other games unless my BF plays them and I watch.

Blue Dragon and Valkyria Chronicles do the New Game+ thing.
TBH, I can't remember any other games besides Chrono Trigger from the SNES days that did it.
