Have you looked at the plot synopsis? There is more detail in there that the actual game: "and then snow walked 10ft further, and he saw another guy and the guy was like "WAHHH" and snow was like 'don't worry dude, I'll save everyone!'"

Combat is very fun once they actually let you play the game for real (~chapter 4?).

It's either around chapter 3 or 4 is when combat slightly picks up. It gets harder as you progress, well at least from where I am (Chapter 7 so far). Only thing I really dislike it how if you're leader dies it's game over. Died about 7 times so far but luckily there's no need to start back from your last save which is a plus.

I don't understand why people have such a hard on for towns in most of the reviews that were made. They give some much hate because there are no towns. I personally love the fact that there are none. No more having to run from store to store to store to get items.

I heard the game supposedly opens up more once you reach Chapter 11, not sure though as I haven't gotten that far.

This. Love that I don't have to speak to townspeople and listen to idle ******** to find clues as to what I need to do next. The battles are ramping up and getting more difficult, I'm really starting to see the genius of the paradigm system as I start to get into different party configurations.

Is anyone else reminded vaguely of the sphere grid in X when using the Chrystarium? It's different for sure, but it still reminds me of that.

When you're out to save the world, its nice to know there are people in it. Its a part of immersion. Don't get me wrong, the lack of people works in favor for this particular story since they're supposed to be outcasts and all but overall, I find populated towns to be an important aspect of role playing games.

I died once when I was following the instructions of the game. It was talking about using the Paradim(sp?) shifts to fight creatures with HUGE amounts of HP. One of the first real big boss battles around 2 or 3. It said "For now, you should use Relentless Assault!" and then the boss kills me in one hit (lucky shot, I think). Retried, and went to Solidarity right away, and won easily.

Snow seems incredibly powerful as a Sentinel.

I died again, just a couple fights later: (Chapter 3/4 spoilers)
When Snow was fighting the Twin Sisters of Shiva. I used Libra and it said "Yeilds to those who get big chains" or something like that. So I just sat there attacking trying to build up the chain gauge. I ran out of time and died. Next fight I used Libra and it showed another line, "Yields to those who withstand attacks". It dawned on me that I just needed to use Steelguard and wait for the Gestalt(sp?) meter to rise.

The battle system is quite impressive. I'm liking it more and more as I go on.

Other users I've talked with have said that with the linear straight forward system it keeps you busy, always fighting, moving on to the next boss and story element. Many seem to like that about it. Makes sense, if the game was open and allowed you to do many things straight from the get go, you wouldn't find yourself drawn into the storyline.

I really don't see how an open system would work well with this particular storyline. Pausing, backtracking, etc, doesn't really seem to make sense. Always moving forward, it's the only thing you can do storyline wise.

This.

When I got to the part of the story where they first showed the Chrystarium, I picked up my phone and texted a fellow fan friend, "HOLY CRAP. THE SPHERE GRID. IT'S BAAAAAAAAAACK."

She was happy.

yeah, I thought that was dumb too. That move (crystal rain) didn't get lucky, it does 200x2 dmg if snow isn't on Solidarity, which is pretty much insta death at that point.

I think that fight demonstrates the idea of moving back and forth between paradigms. When it would open up to do that AOE, I would move to Solidarity so my medic could heal us up and after the Crystal Rain, it goes back to individual attacks so I switch to Relentless Assault there to get it to stagger. I've had to use similar tactics, where I have to switch Paradigms, further on as well to get out of the fight quickly.

Even so, the attack did too much damage. If it only did a little less so that it would have been survivable, but not by much, in Relentless Assault, it would have been better. I wiped twice on it before finally getting lucky with the Crystal Rain timing.

Yes, but I mean literally right off the back, as soon as it started, he used Crystal Rain and killed me.

When I did it again I switched to Solidarity right at the beginning and waited for him to use Cyrstal Rain, and Relentless Assault otherwise to do damage.

It didn't appear to be luck with Crystal Rain, he seemed to have a pattern, one small charge attack, then Crystal Rain, then pretty much nothing til the small charge attack, then Crystal Rain again. I just switched when he was doing the small charge attack.

Really? Weird. For me, I would only get it towards the end of the fight, with many small charges before.

I might just be oblivious, though, and not notice the pattern.

I had set my default Paradigm to Solidarity, so that's how I entered the fight. I tend to run around with a healer if possible rather than always on Relentless, that way I don't have to use consumables to keep the party healed.

I find that I miss the towns and stores simply because they break the monotony. I think I'm either on Chapter 6 or 7 and so far it's been doing the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over with no real changes at all except in who I'm controlling or is in my group. The super-duper save point where you can do everything you need is very convenient but it also keeps you locked in that linear path.

Right now the game has almost exclusively consisted of variations of:
Run -> Fight -> Run -> Fight -> Save Point -> Run -> Cut Scene -> Fight -> Run -> Save Point -> Cut Scene -> Boss Fight -> Cut Scene -> Save Point -> Run -> rinse and repeat.

I was really enjoying the combat system for a while but when it becomes all you do, it get's old. I personally would LOVE to have to go to some town to buy something just to give me something other than fighting to do. Thus far there is NOTHING else to do. I know later it's supposed to open up more but then I heard that's only like a chapters worth.

It's such an amazing game but it's just too much of the exact same thing over and over again. FF games are linear. I know that. I knew that going in but this one seems to be to the extreme.

I love the battle system, my only complaint is that there aren't enough battles for me to fight.

As for the lack of towns, I miss them as well. It's nice to be able to explore the world around you a little more and find out what the 'average person' is thinking.

So do I ever start to level up in this game? Im not out of Chapter 1 yet so maybe this is still a tutorial basically. I keep getting 5 stars and X amount of points per battle but what reason should I care about these points and star ratings as it apparently don't level me up?

I wish I could be cool and have a chicken nested in my hair.

My friend is the same. He's been complaining that he's got no magic, no summon, can only press x, run in a straight line and the story is confusing. When I asked him for how long he's been playing, his answer was... well about 15 minutes.

I'll take a guess: AAAAH, L'CIE, WE'RE GOING TO DIE!

It's not possible to add towns to the game, currently at chapter 9 but unless the whole world changes their overall line of thought, towns won't make sense.

(Spoilers aren't major, but if you're not even past chapter 1, don't read them.)

Overall, I like the game, I don't consider it's linearity as much as a complaint as monotony. It really is just fighting and running. Personally, I don't like how they split this up chapters, it feels like parts of the story are missing or merely there for minor plot convenience. The game sure doesn't feel rushed, but an extra chapter or two or just an overall prologue for the characters might not have been a very bad idea, as far as i'm concerned.

Not directly. It's more like in FFX where everything is based on constantly upgrading the sphere grid rather than actual levels.

In the earlier chapters it doesn't mean much but later on you get more TP refilled and better items the more stars you have,

The game picks up around chapter 3 when you get paradigms. It stays relatively easy, till you get to the further chapters, then you're switching paradigms often (I usually use diversity as default with relentless assault or solidarity when needed).

I got my *** kicked several times by the boss of chapter 9. Stupid destrudo and pwning my leader in one barrage.

None of his attacks particularly hurt much, but I did have all available buffs up. I was more bugged by the fact that he wouldn't just roll over and die. Fight took me 15:30.

Battle system is fun, but I'm only at chapter 5, so I might get bored with it eventually. I have to say that it does take more concentration and focus than previous battle systems. The whole game seems to be a bit more difficult than the previous one, more to think of and do.

And that Chrysarium is a dirty move, it's addictive like hell. The sphere grid was already close to addictive, this is worse. I have to force myself not to check it out after every fight to see if I'm nearer a new spell or ability or such.

Storywise it's pretty good so far, definitely better than the last one. (again just imo though)

Little Chocobo seems to act as Sazh's conscience. Even blocking him from looking up Vanille's skirt. And in a few of the cutscenes it was mimicing Vanille's actions, which was pretty funny.
