PS3 Upgrade, is it worth it?Follow

#1 Mar 09 2010 at 3:38 PM Rating: Good
I've been growing kind of frustrated with my 40 GB PS3 and the lack of hard drive space with it, and last night I had an idea. I was thinking that I could take the 40 GB model in to GameStop and trade it in for in store credit, and then buy one of the new models. Taking all my save data and storing it on a USB drive wouldn't be too difficult, but I'm wondering if you guys think it's worth it.

I read somewhere that it is possible to upgrade the hard drive space, which I'm sure would be cheaper, but I have no clue how to do this or if it's possible on my particular model.

It's possible on all models. It actually says how to replace it in the manual.

So, RTFM.

Hmm, I guess I'll have to see if I can find the damn thing. I think I read somewhere quite a while ago that installing extra hard drives voided the warranty, although I don't remember where. That's why I wasn't sure.

Well, it would seem silly that they'd give you instructions on how to void your warranty.

I'm sure Google should be able to help you out with the manual.

That is very true. I just haven't read the manual. If you don't need to read the manual to hook up and work an electronic, I don't typically read them.

I have not had to replace my HD yet but your post got me thinking about it.

It looks to be a straight forward and not overly expensive process. If you are uncomfortable doing any of the work yourself, grab a tech savy friend (or the neighborhood 12 year old PS3 expert) to help make sure you don't do anything silly while mucking around with the hardware.

There is a little panel on the bottom that unscrews and pops out to reveal a tray holding a hard drive. This tray comes out and will fit any SATA laptop hard drive. A 320 GB hard drive can go for as little as $100 if you shop around. As for the warranty, the warranty is only one year anyways if you have had it more than that your warranty is long gone. If you got some kind of Product Service Plan from the store you bought it from, just switch out the hard drives again before you take it back and there will be no way for them to tell that the hard drive was ever changed. Plus this saves all your downloaded stuff and saves on the PS3 should the thing crap out, unless it's your hard drive that dies.

Yeah I did some window shopping on Newegg after posting this, and I definitely want to replace the HD now. My bf is dragging his heels though, because he doesn't see why we need to upgrade the HD since we don't download anything. I'll manage to convince him soon enough. I found 250 GB HD's on there for 50 to 60 bucks, which is practically nothing.

I don't know how true it is but I have heard the newer slims are cheaper made and don't cool as well. IT could just be rumor but past exp usually has shown later models of a system are made cheaper. You go to trade your system in your not going to get half what its worth with gamestop. I would just upgrade the hard drive personally.

That doesn't work with us actually... it could go the other direction if he wanted it to, but thankfully he's not in to playing those sort of mind games.

Sometimes if I smack him enough times he'll be convinced though.

Well that's just super...

On a related note, I upgraded my PS3 to 500GB today.

It's super for him... He's the one who gets sex whenever he wants.

Whatchya gonna do with 500 GB!? It's taken me three years to use up 200 GB of my 250 external HD.

I think the question is "what won't I do with 500GB?".
