Aion forced pvp?Follow

So I was interested in playing Aion, something I read however has put me off the idea.

Does Aion have forced pvp? I like being able to do quests roam around and have fun exploring with friends and I was hoping to do this on Aion. The prospect of being ganked over and over while trying to play the game would totally ruin it however.

So does Aion have forced pvp or at least some way to opt out of it like in WoW?

PvP isn't forced in the sense that it's required in order to advance in the game.

Each race has a zone they can level in until 25ish or so where they don't have to deal with PvP at all (no rifts appear in these zones). After that though you're either in the abyss or in a zone that contains rifts, and PvP can happen in either of these types of places.

I would politely suggest that if you're looking for a game in which PvP can be entirely ignored, you should probably look elsewhere. It's meant to be part of the game in Aion (hence the PvPvE classification NCSoft gave it)

Don't forget that each race also has a (21-27, then 45+) high-end PvP-free zone (Theobomos/Brusthonin) so you can finish off your leveling. In between, however, Aion is what is called World PvP which means you could be ganked at any time in Eltnen/Morheim, Heiron/Beluslan and, of course, The Abyss (Reshanta).

That non-pvp zone is actually what I was talking about in my post. I couldn't remember the name of the Asmodian one and am FAR too lazy to look it up.

I suppose you can go to 27 in there but there's really no reason to. My general strategy (and I ended up with full daevanion so I did this a bunch of times) for low levels was to do the following:

Level until exactly 9 in the starter area
Ascend
Finish the starter area quests (should be close to 11 by the time you're done)
Do the next region's quests (for me this was Verteron) until there aren't any more, including all the campaign missions. Depending on class this can take you to about 21, maybe 22 if you grind a lot in between quests or solo the campaigns (ranger's very good for this)
Do whatever else you can until 24
Grind 24 to 25. You can DO quests, but don't hand them in. You'll do that later.
Starting at 25, start doing Nochsana Training Camp every time the lockout is up (this is kind of your break in leveling since you can only do this once every 18 hours, just do something non-levely in the meantime, like work on another character, or go outside and get some air)
Do TG runs every day as your only source of exp (do the quests too just don't hand them in yet) to maximize your chances for blue weapon drops
Once you're 28 you've got a decision tree:
-- if you have more than about 60% of the level to go and it's not a double-exp weekend
---- do another TG run
-- else
---- grind the rest of the level out until JUST before 29 (I'm talking like a few thousand away from dinging 29). Again you can do quests for this just to have something to do, just don't hand them in
After that, do your last TG run, if you've been grinding properly you'll ding on the first or second non-elite pull and the rest of the exp in the instance is applied to a level that you couldn't have done TG at (29)
HAND IN ALL THOSE QUESTS HERE. Depending on the number of quests you have to hand in you're looking at several hundred thousand exp worth of quest rewards and will probably end up skipping level 29 altogether and going straight to 30

And that's the point, skip level 29, it's the devil.

At 30, quest your daevanion piece or just go about your business as usual.

Currently, ganking is an issue, and part of it is simply due to class imbalances. I know the "PvPers" love to rationalize it as part of the game, but really there's no gain to be had other than making another player's experience miserable. A lot of random PvP that happens is also something I wouldn't exactly call fair displays of skill or exploiting class flaws (don't confuse this with intended balancing). To increase your odds of success, either PvP in groups or hope you can jump someone who's low on HP due to a PvE fight. The game isn't really built around encouraging fair encounters at the moment, even if it's something as simple as not being able to see the level of enemy players.

I'd say wait it out until the pending 1.9 patch to see if they address this all a bit more, but it's still up in the air when we'd get it stateside. I don't have my sub going at the moment due to a combination of RL and somewhat renewed interest in XI with the coming cap raise, but if you think you're still interested at all, I wouldn't mind doing the "Refer a friend" thing to get some free play. :x

Personally I prefer the PvP system of WOW to that of Aion i.e. battlegrounds and arenas and a "flag" system that allows you turn PvP on and off. As it is there is no defense against higher level enemy players or "goon squads". The Abyss is a free-for-all zone and should remain as it is, but something needs to be done to equalize things in other areas.

I agree that the Abyss should be free-for-all and they def need to do something about the rifting twinks.

We have one group that rift to Elysea all day, everyday and I don't think NCSOft ever intended that to happen.

There are changes coming in 2.0 that will affect how kisks (rez locations), player summoning abilities and log outs in enemy areas are handled. Hopefully this will mean an end to the threat of 24/7 ganking on your own turf and shift PvP into the Abyss.

I love the rifting system but there HAS to be some periods in which you can go out and do things without getting owned every time you pass the guards.

I don't mind dying, it's just bloody inconvenient!
