Help me pick an MMOFollow

#1 Apr 25 2010 at 10:48 AM Rating: Good
At the risk of shooting myself in the foot, I will now leave the fate of my new computer in the hands of the Zamites. I have a list of MMOs that I want to get into, but I will only have time for one when I get back to Americaland.

What shall I play?
EVE:4 (11.1%)
Aion :1 (2.8%)
Warhammer Online :0 (0.0%)
Wait for FF14 :22 (61.1%)
Other (specify):9 (25.0%)
Total:36

I can only tell you what I know about each one, as I'm not currently playing any MMO, because I don't have enough time to fully enjoy one.

EVE-Probably the least time intensive, but at the same time, it's goto an incredibly incredibly difficult learning curve and requires intense time management skills. Keeping your pilot training at all times, and making ISK to start off is rough.

Aion-Grindy. Feels like WoW with pretty graphics and wings. The PvP is awesome, from what I've heard, but I didn't get that far when I had tried it out.

Warhammer Online- They've dropped down to 4 servers Doug. I know you've played this before, but it feels like now, more than ever, they've been really hemorrhaging their player base.

Others that you might try:
If you're looking for a decent F2P game, Allods Online is pretty good, and has some unusual environments and character designs. Gameplay was a bit grindy again. The Ship v Ship PvP in the Abyss/Ether/Outside Space is supposedly quite awesome. Hadn't gotten that far.

That Fantasy Earth Zero that keeps showing up in the Ads isn't half bad either, but I think it would be more entertaining if it didn't feel like Phantasy Star Online in a open~ish world setting. The PVP is supposedly a huge part of this.

I voted for 14.
If you have not played WoW, it is fun (until 14 comes out).

Allods is pretty good for being free. I did play some of this, but went back to WoW when I made some money.

FEZ was kind of lame. 3 classes (Warrior, Rogue, Mage) each can do 2 jobs (Tank/DPS, Rogue/Archer, DMG/Heal) if "speced" that way. Each class is stronger over another class. I played for a week or so, was not for me.

I'd either go WoW or FFXIV. WoW is fun whether you're playing alone or with people. 14 will probably be more fun with friends, but you'll have to wait and you may not have the time commitment, idk.

I voted for other because you didn't list WoW.

There is a "free" Warhammer trial thing out there where you can play as much as you want, but you can not go passed a certain level or above a certain zone tier.

Also, be advised that Warhammer has had billing problems recently and a hiccup in their system caused many subscribers to be charged multiple (10+) times for one month (or whatever billing cycle you subscribed to).

If you are just wanting something and don't want to spend money right now try out Allods Online or even Free Realms.

If you want something 'meaty' right now... try WoW.

If you can wait... then wait for FF14... or even Star Wars: The Old Republic (no clue if it will even hit this year).

World of Warcrack.

I know it's mainstream, being the main stream and all, but it's also highly entertaining. Can't really comment on any of the others, except EVE Online. I actually enjoyed my last subscription, but had to cancel it due to lack of free time. My finances are also pretty much locked up in food right now.

Never really tried the Final Fantasy games, being a PC kid and all, I just never grew up with them the same way.

Aion, well, it was a total disaster for me. I could install the game and log on, but then I'd proceed to rubberband all over the place. Checked the interweb for info and someone told me to ping the server, so I did, and I got back 8,000,000 ms latency. Yeah. Apparently they don't work all too well with some carriers, so a lot of people are just fubar'd. Worst $50 I ever spent.

Having played World of Warcraft since its birth, I'm pretty biased, but it's easy to learn and provides some relatively instant gratification, opposite some MMOs that either leave you hanging for a climax that never comes, or simply ****-block you before you even log in.

You've played Warcraft before, though, haven't you?

I was really trying to see something other than WoW. Me and my battle buddies over here have been talking about making a guild when we get back to the states. Is it even worth starting out from the beginning still? I know the player base is pretty high, but if they're ALL doing end-game raiding, then it'll be a lonely trip to the top.

With the cross realm dungeon finder tool, it has never been easier to get instance groups. May still be a little sparse in the leveling zones, but at least you'll have people to instance with.

Not to mention if you level with friends you'll have a blast. The most fun I've had in WoW was leveling up with RL friends. Second most fun was having a great social guild.

Well, that's any MMO, really. It was especially fun in WAR and FFXI, but that's because the games promoted teamwork a bit more than say, AoC.

My understanding is that a lot of people just spam instances to level now. That means that if you do choose to actually do quests and use zones, you shouldn't have to worry about too much competition for mobs, etc. If you do follow the trend and do instances, well you can easily do 2-3 in an hour if you get good groups (or just run with friends). I'm not sure if you can put multiple people in the matchmaking queue, but I bet you could do it with you and all of your friends and just find 1 or 2 people you need to fill out the group. Although I haven't actually experienced it myself (my entire knowledge comes from about an hour of watching someone else), it seems like a really cool system that Blizzard did a great job on.

Oh you can Q w/ more people.

Doug if you plan to play a MMO w/ friends, WoW and instances running would be a good idea.
You all just need to get to lv15 before you can use the tool. If one is a tank, one a healer..getting groups will be almost instant.

All one has to do is start a group, then place the group in Queue. A confirm box shows up on other's screen asking if they are tank/heals/dps (click what roles one can be).

You can run Random or you can specifically (sp?) pick what dungeon you want to run. If you do the Random way, at the end of the final boss everyone who did Random Q will get a gift bag, and inside is sometimes a good blue item. Helps keep you geared as you lvl (and makes for easy money, as after about 5 runs the item begins to repeat).

Since you didn't really say what you wanted out of an MMO, I'm going to suggest LotRO. More mature player base, more lore focused, mainly PvE. Beautiful game, good classes and I liked the low level instances better than WoWs.

Population distribution among levels was similar to WoW, in that everyone has a max level character. But there's still a lot of alts. Servers have good populations.

Well, I picked the ones I did for the poll because they each had something I liked.

1) I'm a graphics *****. Sue me.
2) I like a game that's hard. Not because it makes me feel special, but because I like the challenge.
3) I like working in groups. If I want to solo I'll play something offline.
4) It needs to be time consuming. This seems strange to you guys, but the fact that things took so long in FFXI is what caused a lot of my favorite experiences in my time playing MMOs. Fun happens most when you aren't trying. At least, in my experience.

Hmm, well LotRO is the best looking fantasy MMO ive played, though i havent played Aion or Conan. I didnt get far enough to say how hard it is, the instances I did were difficult and took many hours to accomplish. Even took strategy, which at low levels is saying a lot.

LotRO has an epic quest line that follows books and most of the time require groups and some are epic indeed. The majority of quests, which are side quests, are solo though. It's not as time consuming as FFXI I dont think. It is more casual.

But if those are your criteria, I dont see WoW being right for you. WoW's graphics arent anything special, it's most definitely not hard at all. And it is was tuned to cater toward the solo casual. (last i played was almost a year ago, sounds like things have changed some) Even less time consuming than LotRO.

ETA: reason i quit LotRO was because I didnt know anyone who played. The most important aspect of MMOs, to me at least, is the people you play with. And i just didnt have that in LotRO which is a shame. That game deserves to be played.

Same can be said for EVE. Talk about a truly interesting game. I didnt know anyone and combined with the learning curve i just burnt out.

The graphics in LOTRO is somewhat comparable to the graphics in Wrath of the Lich King. World of Warcraft builds on a RTS game and was created to give you the sense of being in the RTS games you played, except from a more 3D third-person view. And yes, the graphics are somewhat outdated compared to Age of Conan or Aion, but turn everything up to max and your computer will go nuts, unless it's a hefty one.

The "cartoon" graphics (turning off Full-Screen Glow, or w/e it's called helps) may seem mediocre compared to the more realistic touch in LOTRO, but it's also what enables you to literally run from one end of the map to the other without loading screens. With new detailed shadows, major increase in drawing distance and the upcoming semi-upgrade to especially water graphics, it's not all that bad.

Maybe LOTRO had a graphics upgrade as well, because last time I played it (a year ago or so) it looked like this.

Last time I played WoW, it looked like this.

Edit: Not really a fair comparison. One is an open scenery picture while the other is inside a town. Also, I run WoW at almost max settings and I'm guessing the LOTRO screenshot wasn't taken at max video quality. I'll post an open scenery screenshot once I log in.

Edit2: View over the eastern parts of Dragonblight and Naxxramas hovering over the fields below. The white sort of fog is... well, fog. Apparently the weather was foggy there. Also, I had to compress the image somewhat as I'm running the game in 1440 x 900, hence the weird glitch in the foggy area on the left side of the screenshot.

This one might be better.

I disagree. That screenshot you have of LotRO is definitely not utilizing DX10, and definititely not in max settings. If you want to argue which game performs better on a computer from 10 years ago, you may have a case for WoW. LotRO will not look amazing on a poor machine, on a good machine it look superb.

WoW's graphic quality isnt awful, but like i said before, nothing special.

Would love to find some full size images, since smaller ones always hide the jaggies, but with some AA youll have to take my word on it looking great.

Anyway, screenshots dont really do dynamic lighting justice.

Also, not gonna argue art preference. If you just like the art of WoW more that's cool.

So LOTRO runs DX10 now?

*pondering stance*

Might have to check it out.

Does it look more like this now?

Edit: Wrote the post after your edit. Looks much better than what I remember.

Yes LoTRO runs in DX10, with rumor of a upgrade this year for DX11 if your PC can handle it. I have played both games within the last 6 months and LoTRO as far as realism graphic wise, runs circles around WoW. Difference is you can run WoW on a decent PC with max settings with a decent frame rate, while LoTRO on max takes a much greater PC for smooth results. Also screen shots don't do LoTRO justice since it doesn't show off the dynamic lighting, DX10 shadows, and the DX10 water effects the same way seeing it "live" does. There use to be a few YouTube vids that showed em, but they even pale in comparison.

One reason I'm glad I got the lifetime account, I can walk away for a month or two and don't feel guilty about not playing something I'm paying for like most other MMO's I've dabbled in over the years... I usually just watch the forums for new updates, pop in for a week or two to play the new content, then move on for a while til the next one. Really wish end game would get fleshed out some more, don't wanna raid 7 nights a week, but would like a few more "heroic" type 5 man instances, or even the 3 man like Loth had so we had a greater variety of stuff to do when logging in...
#26 Apr 26 2010 at 4:24 PM Rating: Good
I was once in TinFS in LotRO... but having the lifetime membership I think I have only logged on less than 10 times since launch.

I keep wanting to play LotRO more, but i always seem to find other stuff to do... be it WoW (doing Loremaster) or console gaming...

After seeing the DX10 graphics it makes me want to come play LotRO a lot.

Maybe I'll have some time after Loremaster and the console games I am messing with...
