I didn't look very hard but I didn't see any threads about this.

My friend who is staying with my roommates and I for the next couple days has a Starcraft 2 Beta account. I didn't play the first Starcraft but my other roommates had. Although I am quite familiar with command and conquer, the gameplay took some getting used to for me.

The game is an incredible amount of fun and every match I get blown away by some people's strategies. My first match resulted in me getting owned. All of my other matches have ended with me in 2nd place. Two of them came down to the wire with us both racing to destroy each other's final buildings in our respective bases.

Anyone else playing?

I am ridiculously bad. Like, I've won two games in the months I've been playing. I don't get it--it's like the opponent is able to produce units and buildings 6x as fast. Like the game I just played before logging on. I had JUST gotten hydralisks when my base was swarmed by enemy marauders. And I don't see how I could have gotten any better units any faster. :/ I mean, you can't get anything but Zerglings and Banelings until you have a Lair...

Well, besides Queens. But they get ripped apart in seconds by Marauders. And zerglings get ripper apart by everything.

I do better with Protoss, but still not great. I'm a little too fond of Void Rays.

[EDIT]

If you have a match that lets you get Vikings as Terran, you are in for some fun. :)

Motherships are fun too.

[EDIT2]

I mean Thors, not Vikings.

Oh yea, I'm ridiculously bad. My main problem is I don't expand efficiently. I either expand too slow and get behind on unit production (probably diggory's problem) or too fast and don't have enough defenses when I get rushed. I also tend to fall behind on resource consumption in the mid game, i.e. don't know how to best spend my money and end up not spending it fast enough and fall behind on units.

The fact that they keep resetting the ladder so I'm always fighting people WAY better than me isn't helping.

Sorry that someone had already made a thread >_<

Usually I play as protoss. I've been learning every match though. What I'll do is make a bunch of mining probes and then make the pylon. Then create a warp barracks (or whatever it's called) and make a couple of zealots. Save some money and expand down into the next closest crystal field with my zealots guarding. Then I have lots of money and am not held back by resources.

I watched my friend play as Terran and he looked pro. He built a fleet of 14 battle cruisers and had them fully upgraded with yamatos. He proceeded to rape everyone. He held off his opponents by blocking the bottle neck entrance to his base with buildings and a bunker so enemy ground units can't get through. Then he used an upgraded siege tank behind the building wall.

I just pre-ordered on amazon and it says I should get my own beta key here in the next couple days.

GAH! If I knew that best-buy had instant keys I would have done it through them. Did you pay for it online? My friend pre-ordered his in person at gamestop and the key was on his receipt.

Ya, I did it online. So, I kept getting c++ script errors & ended up having to run the launcher/installer in windows 98 compatibility mode. Then, after about 40minutes of patches, I got in. No single player & so far, I've only practiced against AI's couple times. They're only setting is very easy, so I haven't lost & have had some fun getting used to the new units. Graphics have been updated, but it's essentially the same game.

I've been playing it for a decent amount of time. My handle is Blacktail.sas.

So far, it seems to me that zerg are woefully underpowered. IIRC, in my 100-ish matches, I've lost to a zerg player exactly once, and that was because I had no idea what a roach was. Nobody in NA seems to play zerg unless they draw them on random. I don't blame 'em...I myself haven't met a zerg player that could survive an early marine/marauder assault.

The biggest issue with the game has got to be void rays. They're horrifically overpowered. Ever single protoss player that's worth a damn rushes to them, and rightfully so. They have no adequate counter. Terran and zerg anti-air doesn't match up well enough, so the only way you can top a protoss player using them is to heavily out-produce them. But if the protoss player is solid enough, then you won't be able to put out enough anti-air to beat them, no matter how hard you commit to it.

If anyone's got a solution, I'm all ears. I play terran main, and the best counter I can manage is to hit them hard right when they finish their stargates. But even that's a 50/50 shot if they've turtled up.

Marines seem to be quite strong against void rays. Most likely, you should be able to make a sh*t ton of them before a protoss player has their first void ray, so you should be able to counter them if you can get into their base.

I play protoss main & have only won a couple times, but any time I won it was due to being able to build 3-4 void rays & a couple carriers.

Yeah if I can't cut off the void rays before they start, then I start spamming marines and vikings. It works okay, it's just that it has a lower success rate than every other counter as far as I can tell. That's probably due to the marines being outmaneuvered by the air units. I'm not losing very often right now regardless, but when I do, void rays are usually involved.

I'll add everyone who put up their handle a little later on tonight.

So I switched from playing Terran exclusively to Random now, and my record took the predictable dive. I'm doing well enough with Protoss, thanks in part to using chrono boost like it's my job (too many people seem to forget about this ability).

I CANNOT win with zerg, however. I get the odd victory here and there from a quick rush or using mutas on someone without adequate anti-air, but that's about it. I think the real issue with them is a lack of solid tier-2 units. Zerg tier-2 doesn't really beat any other race's tier-1...so you're left spending more resources to produce less units that are only marginally better than if you had just spammed zerglings.

Zerg are very, very susceptible to air attacks. Building spore colonies uses up drones and hurts your production, so it's not really a desirable way to defend. Overlords no longer detect, so cloaked banshees can ruin your day really quick. Hydras get outmaneuvered very easily. Mutas are okay, but it feels like their cost/strength ratio is a little skewed. Just not a lot of options there.

These are just my personal hang-ups with the race. I'm glad that they made rushing a little more difficult, but it just seems like zerg don't have much else going for them to make up for that right now. There are clearly great zerg players out there, but I sure don't run into them very often.

The best Zerg players I go up against seem to be excellent at harassing you. Rushing, dropping creep into your base, & simply throwing waves of low cost tier 1 troops at you while you spend money on defending & they sits back & expands.

And it took about 100 marines, but I just had a full protoss fleet behind a mothership wiped out by them. The ******* waited till I broke his shell & threw them all at me then marched right through their corpses to my bases. I couldn't build enough immortals in time to take them out >.<
