That's right, the insanely awesome game Portal is free until May 24th. So go get it now. Even if you already have it.

Bah, was just coming to post this. If for some reason you've never played Portal, it's almost (but not quite) worth it to have to put up with Steam to get it free.

I used to have a Steam account. I tried accessing it again and got blocked repeatedly, with it telling me that my password was wrong and that I don't know the name of my cat when I tried to retrieve it. So I just uninstalled Steam and will have to live without Portal.

Fixed it! Smiley: grin

Browsed their forums and found This settings guide to auto force games to boot how you want (dimensions, screen size, etc)

Yes, I actually had to do that way back when I was first playing it because I was playing it on an old laptop with an unsupported video card. Took a couple tries with one of their support folks, but we got it fixed and he was quite helpful.

Is it at all possible you misspelled the name of your cat initially? Steam is honestly one of the most effective delivery platforms for a product I've ever used.

Someone hasn't used very many delivery platforms.

So how do I up the graphics? It looks like a 4bit game on my 32" Screen.
I found how to increase the Game's Window Size, but not the graphics.

I'm pretty new to Steam. Actually this is the 1st thing I've even used Steam for, so I'm clueless on how to use it :3

It's a three letter name. So I'm guessing "No".

I'll take your word for it. It failed to effectively deliver anything to me.

Your post count, especially in terms of "arguing" with varus leads me to believe you secretly like that sort of thing.

This.

I signed up for Steam after seeing this thread Wednesday, took me until before bed last night to get Portal downloaded. There are way more efficient delivery systems out there.

Varus is entertainment. Arguing with a clunky interface that doesn't believe I know my cat's name is not very entertaining at all.

I think the problem with steam is that it isn't "robust." I've never had issues with steam, it always works, downloads at max bandwidth so long as I'm not using the width for anything else, and makes it easier to play with friends in game. I do know that there are plenty of people who have had problems with steam, and I can understand not wanting to put up with a program that doesn't work optimally without minimal, knowable adjustments. When steam works the way it should, it works great. And when it doesn't work the way it should it seems to always be a user end problem, but it happens often enough that blaming the users is a silly thing to do.

For the most part im happy with steam, mainly because of the sweet sales. Ive had 2 games that I paid for and DLd that didnt come with a working CD key. Those situations are frustrating and i haven't been a steam user for long. But like I said, the sweet deals usually make me forget about it.

As for portal, fun demo, beat it in one sitting though and had no desire to play it afterwards. Looking forward to the 2nd installment.

Apparently this guy's been getting quite a bit of flak for his review of Steam (he was trying to download Portal for Mac), and as far as I can tell, rightfully so. Some of the retorts on youtube are great. Not saying that Steam is perfect...not by a long shot. But this guy is either completely inept, or insanely biased against things he's not familiar with.

It's a good reminder that in the internet age, anyone can get their opinion out to mass audiences, no matter how uninformed. Not that we really needed the reminder though, I suppose.

Haha, wow. That guy is seriously looking for things to complain about. And he's doing it in the most droning voice he can come up with. Really dude? Get over yourself.
