I'll start this off with some official quotes that provide some known info about the political system and then maybe we can get some discussion or it or update the thread as more is learned.

From E3:

Quote:
“The political system is a never before seen feature where players can interact with each other to control the flow of the economy, control the flow of the game, and build out on the community, not to just hang out, but to have a purpose.”

Quote:
“The political system is a way in which players can interact. There are a number of ways that a person can be elected into office. Essentially, certain players will lobby the community and try to get elected into office through various means. Once in elected office, the players can control a lot of different things from the economy to player interaction to guild rivalries and other things. It’s an awesome opportunity for a player to get involved in the evolution of the game itself.”

Quote:
“Guild members will be elected to office by combat, wealth and popularity. They will have access to buffs, tax rates and “protection”"

Looks like some potential fun for large guilds and people of reputation? Vague so far but interesting. Although there have been similar systems in other games which I've played... which involve things like taxing cities or factions, controlling castles or territory, and giving special benefits and buffs to those in high attained positions whether through election or competition. So I guess we have to wait longer to find out more details to know what exactly makes this system actually never seen before.

From the official June 2010 Newsletter No.5, a short PvP relevant Q&A:

Quote:
Q: What can you tell me about PvP rewards?

A: TERA will have a variety of rewards for PvP activities. For example, PvP is one way for players to achieve public office in the game’s political system—literally killing your way into positions of power and prestige!
