Westernization Process of TeraFollow

#1 Jul 15 2010 at 3:21 PM Rating: Decent
Currently there is an ongoing debate on whether or not North american and European players will enjoy the content of Tera. However fear not, as En Masse and Bluehole Studios is doing their best at making Tera optimal for all players. With that being said, one of the major concerns is if Tera will be another Grind MMO. ''Grind'' meaning spending hours and hours killing random mobs just to gain experience, this is one of the main play styles of Korean based MMORPGS. However, Scapes (Senior Community Manager for En Masse Entertainment) has posted more information regarding players concerns on Westernization.
Quote:
''We want to make questing the optimal method of leveling. To that end, we're developing more than 1,000 quests and four times as many quest archetypes as were in FGT2. Additionally, we are evaluating and improving the geographic distribution of quests to ensure that the rewards scale to match the required level.''

Well there are definitely NA and EU testers that already enjoy the content of Tera and a lot of people are hyped about the game. But whether it will be a success in terms of sales and subscriptions and if it gains the numbers for a healthy and long living community is still unknown. It'll be hard to judge until the testing phases open up to include more people, but it seems to have been making a strong showing and getting positive impressions from many of the media that attend conventions.

Very true. This is just something that allot of people are concerned about, and i know a few of my friends overlooked Tera mainly because of its origins in Asia. More coverage of the westernized version of the game (i.e. articles, screenshots, video gameplay) needs to be released before a larger fan base will convinced. This is a bit hard because FGT3 and the closed/open beta has yet to be released.

Honestly I'm more concerned about people rage-quitting because they find the non-targeting system so difficult.

People that play FPS games probably won't have too much trouble with the game, and will probably have the upper hand against people who do not play FPS/aren't very good at FPS games.

More information/FGT/CB/OB definitely need to be released though. Then again; it is still early. Even if a lot of information were to be released that would convince the western audience, it still wouldn't necessarily convince them to commit now because its, simply put, still too early.

there's been a lot of setback for Tera in many gaming communities because of wide spread disappointment in Aion. there's also the matter of people seeing the art style and assuming Aion clone. so Tera basically has to work even harder to win back the people that bought into the hype of other Korean games only feel betrayed and give up. and I agree, there definitely needs to be more tests and more coverage to sell people on the game. their recent successes at various conventions is a good start though.

Exactly. I think their appearance at Comicon and Gamescom 2010 should bring enough attention to Tera to really increase the amount of public attention.

yeah, a lot of people did complain about the difficulty, want lower execution requirement systems, or just plain like traditional mmorpg combat systems with target and hotkey. on the other hand, there are also people who like and want higher skill ceilings, and has the potential to attract different and new types of players to it.

it's not just FPSs, but also action RPGs since Tera is basically an action RPG/FPS hybrid. anyone familiar with other action RPG games would also have a bit of a starting edge due to experience with similar systems.

I know that theirs a major guild out there for tera (noxxious maybe?) that is currently getting their skills up by playing darkfall. The gameplay is different but similar enough to get the idea of how tera might be.

I've heard of them. some other online games with action rpg style systems include Mabinogi Heroes and Fantasy Earth Zero. less but still related are games like Dragonica. there are also a lot of offline rpgs which also have action style systems, such as the Tales series, or .hack series. I should probably add that Tera actually contains some elements of fighting games as well, and some fundamentals do carry over.

And this is another reason why i believe that Tera will be so successful. It will allows players to relate to other game styles that that they love. Im just really hoping that the launch of the other major MMO titles wont effect Tera's community that much. Star wars mmo already has a huge fan base, so they have the upper hand.

yeah, it has the potential to attract people from each of these genres and get them interested in a MMO. action MMOs are already quite popular in the East, and hopefully it'll pick up in the West too. I happen to like action RPGs, FPSs, and fighting games so it's a perfect blend for me.

So far EME seem to be doing a good job as far as the transition to the western audience is concerned.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to be more satisfied with their efforts so far as compared to some other Westernization efforts done by other companies.
