So after SC2 got released I figured I'd get a legit copy of the original Starcraft so I could play online. So far my experience has been... interesting.

I've played through all the solo campaign and custom maps before over the years, but playing online is almost like a completely different game.

I constantly find myself in a position where I don't have any idea what the **** I'm supposed to be doing. There are so many maps people make that fundamentally change how the game is played... I got on this one game where everyone is supposed to fend of "tar monsters"(zerg overlords and other things) before they overrun the "city"(a bunch of random buildings). Well I wasn't able to figure it out right away and had about 5 other people ******** the entire time until we inevitably lost.

Similar maps I've come across involve units named after Super Mario characters that have incredible stats and are almost impossible to kill. Well, I was on the "bad guy" side as "Larry Koopa" and died almost immediately, whereas I'd constantly be respawned as a "goomba" (zergling) and haplessly tried to contribute to the battle in some way until I got bored and gave up.

Another more interesting example was Starcraft's version of Risk. Again, I wasn't able to figure out what to do right away so I was wiped off the map pretty quickly, though I was given opportunity to try and recover throughout the game as my people attempted to revolt.

Anyway, I'm not terribly bad at the ACTUAL game of Starcraft(not that great either). I almost always play as either Terran or Zerg.

I used to love Warcraft 2. I went through all the solo stuff in it and my friend and I made a ton of custom maps where basically we was fighting super powerful boss fights (like Gul Dan with max hp and 1 shotting our basic units).

Anyways finally played it online and before I had 5 grunts made somebody had an army of ogres destroying my town. I just don't get into these type of games in pvp. I guess I am too relaxed and want to take my time and of course in pvp there are always the hardcore nerds who ruin it for casuals.

Right, because the only way to be better than you at a game is to be a 'hardcore nerd'.

You sure you weren't playing against Koreans? This game is actually a national past-time for them, they even air the tournaments on their networks regularly.

The mouse I'm using right now sponsors some extremely talented female Korean SC player, so maybe if I were to play SC ever I'd acquire her talent.

No you don't gotta be hardcore but there are alot of them on there. Same people you see when playing online deathmatch FPS games. They know every nook and cranny, every power up because they play the game all day long. Thats a hardcore nerd.

Learn to use hotkeys & queue commands & you'll double the speed of your game.

Otherwise, wall up & build a **** ton of carriers as protoss.

As someone who played a ******* of custom maps on the original SC, I can say that you do have to play a few games on a custom map to see what's going on and how to do stuff before you'll be worth anything. The best thing to do is to clearly state at the start of the game that you're new to the map and ask for advice. :)

What gets me is.... how do they make all these elaborate custom maps? I've tried using the campaign editor and honestly I have found it to be incredibly inflexible and a nightmare to use.

They use mods. Some things they do in the custom maps just can't be done using the basic editor that came with the game. But I did download a few mods and have some fun with it. It was pretty fun, but this was years ago.

The map editor on the original SC was simple and intuitive and I made quite a few custom maps myself using just the basic trigger function. I never did get the hang of the WC3 editor though, and haven't looked at this one yet.

The WC3 editor is actually pretty easy, once you gain some basic knowledge of Triggers. With just basic knowledge, you can already create simple Tower Defense maps or RPG's.
I'm actually still messing around with it sometimes myself. The problem however lies in how long it takes to complete a map, I can never be bothered long enough to finish one! :P

I was the other way around. Try as I might, I just couldn't get the SC triggers to work correctly, but had little trouble with the ones on WCIII.

Granted, I never tried as hard on the WCIII one.
