PvP Gear vs. Tier SetsFollow

#1 Apr 21 2007 at 12:16 AM Rating: Decent
I have a question about the PvP Gear sets versus the tier sets.

How does the PvP gear, so Grand Marshall's lvl 70 rare, compare with the various tiers, especially for PvE? Is it substantially worse or decent and for PvE what would it be like? What I mean is, is GM better than Tier 2? or Tier 3? I'm guessing its not better than Tier 4 for sure. And how much worse is it when its worse? I am mainly talking about for PvE, but if anyone has anything to say about PvP, I'd love to hear that too.

The reason why I am asking this is because I just hit 70 and I've had difficulty finding people to run instances with. It takes several hours to find a group and then if we're successful in running things, nothing drops for me. Well, one thing dropped that I could use, but it was part of a Warlock set. So after a week of that, I quit running instances and am now trying pvp for my gear. So the question basically is, if I'm going to start running raids once my gear and guild gets in shape, will this be a substantial and lasting upgrade? I don't want to take a long time PvPing to get a whole set and then find that its no good for dungeons at all, or I'll replace it almost immediately. I mean Grand Marshall's also looks awesome compared to anything I've previously seen so it'd be nice if they were a good useable set.

Oh two other questions: when do people think that the next patch will come out and what does resilience do since this set seems very keen on it.

I wouldn't compare the 70 PvP sets to the old 60 PvE sets(T2/T3). However, from what I've heard, T5 and the Arena PvP set are basically set up as equivalent items, but the Arena set is just more PvP oriented(though you could almost say that about some of our set bonuses...arcaneblastbonuslol).

As Poldaran pointed out, the Gladiator's Regalia (current level 70 Arena PvP Epic Mage set) is the PvP counterpart of Tirisfal Regalia (Tier 5). Blizzard has stated that the Arena PvP sets will be updated each season to stay on par with new PvE tiered sets. It is assumed that the Arena Season 2 set will be on par with the upcoming Tier 6.

The level 70 PvP sets and PvE sets are designed to be good at their respective roles. It's obvious from the stat distributions.

Since you mentioned the Grand Marshal's set, let's take a look at how it compares to its PvE counterpart, the Aldor Regalia (Tier 4):

Grand Marshal's Regalia
Armor: 633
Stamina: 177
Intellect: 81
Damage done by spells: 123
Resilience rating: 91
Spell critical strike rating: 81
2 piece set bonus: +35 Resilience.
4 piece set bonus: Reduces the cooldown of your Blink spell by 2 sec.
1 Meta socket
2 Red sockets
3 Yellow sockets
1 Blue socket
Socket bonuses add: Resilience, Spell critical strike rating

Aldor Regalia
Armor: 723
Stamina: 112
Intellect: 137
Spirit: 71
Damage done by spells: 177
Spell critical strike rating: 51
Spell hit rating: 35
Spell penetration: 15
2 piece set bonus: Gives you a 100% chance to avoid interruption caused by damage while casting Fireball or Frostbolt.
4 piece set bonus: Reduces the cooldown on Presence of Mind by 24 sec, on Blast Wave by 4 sec., and on Ice Block by 40 sec.
1 Meta socket
1 Red socket
2 Yellow sockets
3 Blue sockets
Socket bonus adds: Spell damage

It is obvious that the Grand Marshal's Regalia has much higher Stamina and better Spell critical strike rating. Whereas the Aldor Regalia has much higher Spell damage, Intellect, and Spirit.

Moreover, the PvP set has Resilience whereas the PvE set has Spell hit rating and Spell penetration. The socket bonuses also reflect the emphasis on Resilience in PvP, and raw Spell damage in PvE.

The Grand Marshal's Regalia's set bonuses are obviously geared towards PvP and would do little good in PvE content. The Aldor's Regalia's set bonuses stray ab it from the PvP vs PvE model. But it has been noted that the Tier 5 set bonuses for most classes are very attractive for any aspect of gameplay. In fact, they are usually much better than the Tier 5 set bonuses (IIRC they are being re-tuned in the upcoming Patch 2.1.0).

Although the sets are designed for their respective type of gameplay, it doesn't mean that the PvP sets are garbage in PvE content or vice versa. But the bottome line is if you want the best set for PvE, you'll have to run PvE content to get it. Similarly, if you want the best set for PvP, you'll have to do PvP content to get it.

It's as simple as that.
