heyy guys whats shaking.

im lookin into getting an additional stick of ram. but im a total idiot when it comes to computer stuff so here i am. ive been told that you have to match the sticks of ram. like u cant have a 512 stick and a 1g stick together, is this true?

i didnt know how much ram i had to start (pc was a christmas present) so i went over to my system specs and it said 504mb. is this right? as far as i know it only comes in 512 sticks so i was like 504 what?

anyhoo if i got a 512 stick would that work? thanks much

False. Unless it's a dual channel ram setup. then i believe you need to match them (size wize).

You have 512 for arguments sake. There's some math behind the scene because 1meg does not equal 1000 kilbytes its more like 1024. All of the common quantities you see are in powers of 2.

2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024,2048 ... etc

If you get the right TYPE then yes. We don't have enough information to answer what type you need. Your best bet is to research your model of PC (dell/compaq/sony/etc) and find out what you need from their site/support number. If you buy it from them then they will give you the right stuff but it will cost alot more than if you find it on like newegg.com or off pricewatch.com.

Your other option is to get a more computer savy friend to do it for you, or lastly and i DO NOT recommend this but I will throw it out as an option, you could take it to a place like Best Buy (Geek Squad ... /sigh) and have them do it. Expect to pay about 75-80$ an hour + cost of parts for that option.

8 MB is being utilized for onboard video. Is there anything specific you're looking to do with this PC, or just increase the RAM?
