New PC choices.Follow

Looking for a new PC. Good space, runs as smooth as butter on a hot pan, and def. gaming PC.

Here's what I'm at so far.

Either...

Alienware Area-51® ALX

Gateway® FX530XT

Dell XPS 720H2C

So far I'm leaning towards the Dell, but the Alienware just has so many perks. I'm torn. So, anyone have one of these or know enuf about PCs to be able to commentate on which is the best for what I'm looking for?

(I don't want to list each PC's specs and perks cause I just don't have that much patience to properly space, fix, head, yaddayadda everything. lol)

I recently bought my wife a dell laptop as she is starting her masters soon. Remember if you ever have to call Dell for support you will not got a native english speaker. I wont buy from them again b//c of this.

From what I have read on here Alla has had a lot of issues with his Alienware.

Have you looked at customizeing a HP?

A few things to keep in mind...

Dell and HP have a cycle between them. Basically one of them makes great computers for a while while the other one relies on name recognition alone and makes crappy comps. Right now its HP's turn to make good computers while Dell makes crap.

I am a hardware technicial and IT dood at the moment, and about 90% of our broken PC's - that are actually broken and not a stupid user - are Dell PCs. Gateway has always been bad, they just get crappier with each new year. Alienware is owned by Dell, so is also crap right now.

I'd go with HP, specifically one of their middle to high end laptops depending on budget constraints.

Or if you have four grand or so you can build a gaming rig that'll be simply unstoppable. Dual quad core proc's, I think like 8 gigs of ram, a 320GB drive, dual video cards...

You can custom build a really nice rig for around 1200 tbh. I do it for clients all the time. Of the three you listed, if I HAD to use one of them, I would opt for Alien simply for the fact that they have been in the gaming rig market for awhile.

If you have the time and are willing to put in a little work and learn a little as you go, you can save a ton of cash and build yourself a really nice rig for a lot less money and you don't get scripted support when you call for it.

If you choose this option, you can go to either NewEgg or Pricewatch for ideas.

In fact, here is one I whipped up just for the hell of it to give you an idea with a ballpark price.

Motherboard - ASUS M2N-E SLi AM2 nForce 500 SATA2 DDR2
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 x2 S.AM2 6000+ Dual Core
Heatsink - HIGH-SPEED FAN WITH THERMAL COMPOUND
RAM - 2gb Pc2 5300 667mhz Ddr2 Kit 2x1gb Chips
HDD - 250GB SATA150 7200RPM HARD DRIVE
Vid Card - nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256MB PCI-e SLI HD
CD #1 - CD-R/RW - INERNAL CD BURNER DRIVE IDE
CD #2 - DVD Burner DVD-RW Drive House Brand
Sound Card - CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER LIVE 7.1 24-BIT
Floppy - MITSUMI 3.5" BLACK FLOPPY DISK DRIVE
NIC - 3COM 10/100 PCI NCI NETWORK 3C905 CARDS
Case - SuperTower ATX Multi-Fan LCD Window Case
Power Supply - 600Watt Dual Core Certified Power Supply
Case Cooling - 2x Case Cooling Fan 80mm
OS - MS WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL EDITION
Speakers - Midiland 5.1 Multi-Channel 6-Piece Set

This setup, while basic and not really super planned out as to best of whatnot for price, would run you $1219.00 give or take. And from that you can swap out items, mix and match, order certain things from one place and certain from another.

Personally if I were building a PC from the ground up I would opt for Intel now days over AMD. Statistically speaking Intel procs perform better when multi-tasking than the newer AMD procs, which means hell has most likely already frozen. Regardless I'd look at an Asus P5N-E SLI NVIDIA 650i Socket 775 ATX Motherboard with a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz Socket 775. That should run around 400+ for the mobo and proc, but its probably one of the best in the world right now for gaming.

If you are really interested in buying or building a new PC and want to see a more indepth review of the current processors from both AMD and Intel and see how they stack up against one another, go here. In almost all tests the Intel proc won especially as it concerns gaming.

What I considered doing was taking the system specs from one of HP's VoodooPC gaming machines (specically Hexx), buying the components, and sticking them in a Sonata III case. You get the same PC for about half the price that way.

Only downside is putting it together yourself, but it's not too hard if you follow the instructions, and you get to pick your own OS that way. (Instead of Vista, for example, you could pick up XP 64 to take advantage of the processor without the mess of dealing with a new OS.)

I'll refrain from any outright endorsements for HP since they kinda pay my salary, but on a personal level I've loved all my HP boxes to bits and have never had a problem with them at all.

The Alienware will have much greater longevity in terms of the parts you will be able to swap out over the years. But at the high end range, building your own is much better.
