Ventrilo- TCP or UDP Ports?Follow

I just moved into college and of the 3 servers I use, I am unable to connect to 2. From this I have come to the conclusion that the ports are blocked by my college's firewall, but in order for the tech people to open up the ports, they need to know if they are TCP or UDP. Thus far the only info I can find is at [link=http://protocolinfo.org/wiki/Ventrilo[/link] which says that, "By default, servers listen on TCP port 3784 for voice data and UDP port 3784 for status queries. While this can be changed, in the free version of the server this configuration option is locked, so all free servers use port 3784."

Being damn near computer illiterate, I have no idea what status queries are. If anyone can give me any help in the matter or guide me in the right direction I would be most appreciative.

Is this what you are asking or are you asking about TCP and UDP as your thread topic states?

If you are still asking about TCP and UDP you already answered your own questions;

Status Queries of what?
Quote:
query
(n.) A request for information from a database. There are three general methods for posing queries:
# Choosing parameters from a menu: In this method, the database system presents a list of parameters from which you can choose. This is perhaps the easiest way to pose a query because the menus guide you, but it is also the least flexible.
# Query by example (QBE): In this method, the system presents a blank record and lets you specify the fields and values that define the query.
# Query language: Many database systems require you to make requests for information in the form of a stylized query that must be written in a special query language. This is the most complex method because it forces you to learn a specialized language, but it is also the most powerful.

(v.) To make a request for information from a database.

In general your checking the status of a request.
