My very first virus... Please helpFollow

Hello,

As the title of the thread says, I have a virus. As for as I know this is the first virus I've had on my computer in the 3 years that I've owned it. I have Nortons installed on my computer and it did not catch it.

I'm don't know a whole lot about computers, so please excuse my lack knowledge and terminology.

As far as I can remember, I have not downloaded anything today. This problem was non-existant yesterday and only began occurring a few hours ago. What's happening is, whenever I beging to chat with anyone on MSN, a series of dots immediately appear in the chat box on their own accord. I am typing absolutely nothing when this happens. After a few seconds, the dots turn into a jumble of seemingly random words. The only thing that seems to appear often are the words "Bernard Miller" and "Error".

Also, when this happens, or any time I run a new program, another window appears in the top left corner of the screen that simply looks like a series of periods. It starts out as just a few, but then it gradually increases the amount of periods until it reaches about midway across the screen. The window will sometimes disappear and then reappear and just repeat the process until it seemingly randomly stop. There is also a button at the end of this series and when I cursor over it, the sub-text says "Finish the line"

So far I've tried running Norton's and Combofix to find the problem, but it persists. I also tried to use AVG, but I get an error every time I attempt to install it that says there arn't enough resources for the program to run.

I've never seen or heard of anything like this before and I'm reluctant to open or use any more programs. The last thing I want is to have my credit information sent to whoever did this.

Come to think of it, the only odd thing I've done all day was switch keyboards from my PS2 to my PC to see if it was still working since it hadn't on my PS2. The problems occured about 30-60 minutes after this, but I somehow doubt this is related

Thanks in advance for any help or information I may be provided.

Sounds like you got something from someone else or maybe through outlook or maybe a family member or friend downloaded something they shouldn't have. I know certain p2p software are sometime malicious (especially if you download the wrong thing), as well as AOL being a real tard when it comes to uninstalling it and its sheer mountain of garbage ads and such.

One thing you can do is try to use an online or browser-based virus scanner. Panda antivirus has one and I'm sure there are others, google for them if possible. They take a while but they're pretty decent when your currently installed antivirus is locked down by the virus. Also make sure Windows is fully updated and try to run their malicious program removal tool (google how to if necessary).

I recently worked on a neighbor's pc that had something so intrusive that it prevented me from installing apps such as adaware or spybot search and destroy, which are both malware detectors/destroyers. Sad thing was they didn't have an antivirus installed and made use of certain junk software that just invites the sorts of things they got. Wound up having to make and burn some CD based tools to boot into a different environment to do the scanning and deletion... probably a bit complicated for someone not very well versed or confident with computers and this sort of tinkering. Just have to remember that a pc is a tool, and like all tools must be kept sharp and in working order by taking precaution and safekeeping steps. Most ISPs now have an antivirus and sometimes a firewall for you to use free of charge, just download and install their tools.

Do your best. If you have a friend that knows someone who's half-cousin's son/daughter's roommate is good with this sort of thing you might try asking them for help with it and see if they also carry CD-based tools for this. if they don't they'll probably have a hard time dealing with it at first.

Try some free solutions first;

Housecall Virii scanner and remover
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

ClamWin portable
http://www.portableapps.com
(Can be downloaded with the suite or just that application)

I would try those first and foremost as with my experience housecall will catch almost anything you have. If these solutions do not work then post back and I have a few other things you can try.

If for some reason you are still running out of resources then I suggest booting into safemode with networking. you can do this by pressing F8 while your machine starts up and it should list about 8 options (Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ Networking, Boot Windows Normally, etc.)

Do that then try and run the online or portable versions.

I would also suggest while you are doing that to run a spyware cleaner such as spybot S&D. As spyware can also influence your machine almost like a virii can if not worse by eating system resources.

Hello again,

Since last night I've used several different virus scans including the ones suggested, and the only one to pick anything up was AVG (I redownloaded and installed and it seemed to work fine then.) Oddly enough the files it detected were from a game I had downloaded several months ago named "Gunz". - but had only experienced any problems recently.

Thanks again for the help, and if I experience any more problems I'll be sure to report back.

Thanks again for the help. Take care.
