The biggest reason for no images is avoiding 3rd party content. We currently allow users to upload the images they show as their avatars, and any image tags in posts thing would have to be the same sort of thing.
Which means we need to write ourselves a good quality image hosting service before we do img tags in posts.

Hell, Google does it. If sites can run their ads then they can certainly steal their software.
Google does it by filtering out words in your search and filtering certain images if the sites they come from contain words that fit into their "filter" context.
You can google image search for a word they don't yet recognise like "lolicon" and get plenty of stuff past the "filter".
The problem we'd have is we won't have the ability to use meta tags and words.
