I'm sure this has been kicked around before, but I looked throught the past 4 pages of posts and didnt see anything.

My question, what do you feel about DRK using Souleater?

I was in a party last night with another Dark who insisted we use Souleater at beginning of fight. Wasn't really clear to as why. Something to do with having a monk as a tank, and it would keep us from getting poisoned since we were doing flys in Crawlers. I don't know. We were going so fast and then the party ended so quickly I never got a chance to get the 411 on it.
All I know is my hp dropped fast and the WHM was healing like crazy.

I seem to remember a post about this DRK (Dizzey) but couldnt find it anywhere... couldnt remember if it was good or bad or what it pertained to was hoping this might have been somthing brought up... but I cant find the post :-( Dizzey if you're reading this, why the souleater??

So please someone clue me in. Souleater does cause DRKs to hit hard, but it also takes the healing away from the PLD. It also takes the hate to if the PLD isn't strong enough to hold it...
I mean it's a great ability to have, but so is Poisonga, but you don't see me using that do you ;-)
I only use Souleater towards end of battle, or if I use 2 hour.

I haven't gotten the chance to party with many drks, but from what I can tell using Souleater isn't all that bad. I think it'll be ok if he has regen up and controls his hits.

IMO the problem will be when they are using a weaponskill such as Guillotine. I don't know if multi-hit WS will drain more of your HP when you use them, but my drk friend loses lose to half of his life when he uses Guillotine.

I have leveled my DRK to 45 so I have a little insight on this. :-b. IMO Souleater should DEFINITELY not be used in the beginning of the fight. The ja itself causes hate. I've seen it a few times (and I use it in BCNM) where as soon as I light souleater up, the mob turns on me. Here are the issues I see:
1. It takes hate away from the tank
2. It causes the WHM to work harder because now they have to heal you
3. With the WHM casting on a second person, you reduce your chaining ability.

Now I did use it on occasion towards the end of fights. If the tank has good hate control, and you need to get a mob finished off, it works well. I definitely disagree with the beginning of the fight SE, however. Just my two cents.

if the mnk was the tank, i can understand why he insisted that he use souleater at the beginning.

speaking from a tank's perspective: normally, i advise all dd's to let it all out only after the first voke minimum. that allows me time to establish some hate, so that i can control who the mob hits as often as possible.

but in a party where the tank is not necessarily the best person to tank, as a player, i'd go for high dmg output as early as possible. mob dies fast = less healing needed = don't need to care who is tank. i.e. you shift toward no-tank or semi-tank status.

that's my opinion. :)

You know, a lot of Dark Knight's use macro's stating they want Regen when they use it. It really helps keep the cures down. Besides, when any other party member takes little damage (i.e. less that the tank does due to AOE) regen is usually all they will get.
If you have Regen II, then you're usually fine. It does more damage, which is a good thing. I've only seen one DRK die by using it, and it was because he forgot to turn it off.

I also agree to the above poster, if you have a MNK tank, you need all the damage you can get.

What ever happened to using Cover? As soon as my DRK says that he's using sneak + souleater + weaponskill, I hit my cover macro:

/ja "Cover" <stnpc>
/p Using Cover!!! <call> <lastst> get behind me now
hit F2-F6 for DRK
wait for him to hit WS, and hit enter

It's as simple as that. That keeps him safe, and keeps me with the hate. However, I don't agree with using it in the very beginning of the fight unless your PLD has enough MP to be able to grab any hate he lost back.

All you have to do is click on the icon for Souleater. (the one next to signet) Being on PS2 I use triangle, triangle, highlight the souleater icon and press x.

Yes Mattea. I actually had to do this last night. I was tanking for Genkai 1 in the Nest. Now being a Monk my VIT and DEF aren't the highest so berserk can be a bad thing. I've actually popped on berserk to finish an sc, clicked it off and threw on defender to continue tanking. It makes it nice to be able to switch real quick to go between damage for a skill chain and defense.

great post! didn't think Cover was any use, till you mentioned this. geez... time to experiment with my pld sometime. i'm not yet too wellversed with macros... what do <stnpc> and <lastst> npc do?

about using Souleater at beginning of fight, i've already stated my opinion above.

<stnpc> will bring up blue target icon to choose target, although i just use simpler version <st> for select target (stnpc is to select NPC's i.e. mobs) and <lastst> will display the name of the last target from a <st>, i use them for my refresh macro, as i can melee from time to time, if the PT gives me time to >.>

Oops. I just realized the goober mistake I made with posting that macro. I should have used the <stpc> macro instead of the <stnpc> macro.

Here are some of the useful selections that I know.

<stpc> - Select Target Player Character - brings the blue cursor up for you to select any players that are close. This is useful for curing, status removing, etc. in party mode since you can hit F2 - F6 to select your party members quickly.

<stnpc> - Select Target Non Player Character - basically the same as above but only mobs this time.

<bt> - Battle Target - I use this as a PLD for targetting the incoming mob before provoking. My macro is actually /attack <bt> which will also draw my sword. Use EXTREME caution with this type of macro if you are a mage. Once you get to the point where linked mobs can be slept and fought later, this macro will ***** you in a heartbeat as it isn't picky on which "red target" it will choose.

<lastst> - Last Selected Target - this is useful for telling people in party chat who you're covering such as my cover macro, or who you are healing, etc. In my macro shown above I actually don't have to know the person's name that I'm using cover on. I just use the <stpc> for selecting them, and then the <lastst> piece will say in party chat who is being covered.

If I think of some more that I may have missed, I'll add them here later.
