Well, firstly I think this administration has done a simply remarkable job in deploying a military that was decimated by foolhardy Clinton era budget cuts and troop reductions that clearly placed both the best interests and security of this great nation in grave peril. One should of course, never advocate for war, but when negotiating with foreign states it is imperative to do so from a position of strength. Presidents Regan and Bush the elder proved this to you and I, and indeed, the world by causing the collapse of Soviet Communism in the face of a vastly superior United States Military.
While I applaud the current administration for it’s brilliant campaign in Iraq, I would argue that the best course for the nation would be to dramatically increase defense spending and troop strength. There are multiple reasons this would benefit us a nation. Allow me to segregate them into three categories, which I will address forthwith. Strategic, Economic, and Technological.
Strategic – Let me begin by first countering a common left wing argument that an increase in standing troop strength could be perceived as a threat by other nation states. While in a situation of relative equity among war powers between states this could be the case, the Unites States is clearly not in such a position. Even our current military strength should be viewed essentially as an absolute in a strategic sense. It would seem apparent that any nation who would be significantly threatened by an increase in troop strength would be in a superior position relative to our own strategic interest. To simplify somewhat, nations already held in check strategically by stand off nuclear options will not perceive increased ground troop strength as a significant increase in danger to them over what they perceive presently. China will not fear an invasion if we increased the standing army to even one million troops. States that harbor terrorists, however, may. In no way can I conceptualize of that being detrimental to our interests. In my mind states that harbor terrorists should be terrified of us as barbarian nations were of Rome under Augustus.
Economic – Defense spending cannot but help the economy. It’s impossible that it shouldn’t as it directly creates jobs, often well paying jobs, in critical industrial sectors that use the increased revenue to reinvest in the communities surrounding them. Witness the economic miracles in places like Groton CT when defense spending is appropriately applied to needed programs. Unlike spending this money on wasteful entitlements which generate nothing for the economy but a permanent underclass of poor citizens who fall prey to a culture or dependence without contribution, using it to create high paying jobs offers opportunity as opposed to a handout which is what America is all about. Give a man a fish as the great philosopher once said.
Technological – Without increased military spending the United States is in real danger of losing it’s edge in technology and innovation. More scientific breakthroughs than can be listed have been the result of defense spending. Not only big ticket technologies, either. For every Manhattan Project or Radar there are literally thousands of smaller breakthroughs that impact all of our daily lives. Velcro, for instance, and of course this very Internet we use to communicate at this moment. Inovation of course feeds the economy, which feeds innovation and it becomes a pleasant cycle perpetually lifting the United States to its rightful place as sole superpower on the globe.
