But aside from FMA, am I wasting my time in that search?
Nope.
*Steamboy - A movie by the same director as Akira. It received mixed reviews, but I don't think it was wholly bad; at worst it was not good.
*Last Exile - 26 episode series that focuses on flying machines. I found it to be quite enjoyable, and the song "A Morning in Norkia" is one of my favorite instrumentals. This is probably the paragon of steampunk anime.
Both of those series are far truer to steampunk themes than FMA. FMA is more of a industrial setting, "steam" without the "punk."
*Pumpkin Scissors - falls more into the realm of FMA in that it's not really steam punk, mostly just industrialization. Solid scissors that seemed somewhat incomplete.
*Samurai 7 - Some light steampunk themes, but mostly focusing on samurai action.
*Memories - One of the stories involves a sort of steam punk setting.
*Trigun - More western than steampunk, but again a few light themes.
