Funcom Introduces “Booster Packs” To PC Market - First Anarchy Online booster will feature land control -
Zurich, Switzerland—August 12, 2002 – A familiar concept in other genres of gaming, Funcom today announces the first “booster pack” for the PC market. Where “expansion packs” typically offer players additional playfields, new creatures and other large content, a “booster pack” provides tools that enhance the experience within the game world. The first Anarchy Online booster pack is scheduled to be in stores for the holiday buying season of 2002. Pricing is yet to be determined, but should be less than the cost of an expansion pack. “Booster packs have been standard in card-based games for years,” said Trond Arne Aas, Funcom’s newly appointed President and CEO. “We’re excited about modifying this idea for our players in massively multiplayer games and we’re convinced that our competitors will soon come out with booster packs of their own.” Funcom unveiled the Anarchy Online expansion pack, Shadowlands, at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The company hoped to have the product finished in time for this year’s holiday buying season. However, the expansive scope of Shadowlands meant the team needed more time and release is now planned for the first half of 2003. Funcom realized several exciting but smaller ideas scheduled to be additions to the expansion pack could still be ready in time. “These cool features were still too large in megabytes to offer as a regular content patch, but not large enough in content to call an expansion pack. We needed something in-between,” said game director Gaute Godager. “We hated the idea of holding stuff back from our players until everything for Shadowlands was done. So, we came up with the idea of booster packs.” Land control is the main feature of the first Anarchy Online booster pack along with additional graphic updates and new sounds. Much larger in scope to Funcom’s previously discussed ideas of land control, this feature will be vital for those players taking an active part in the conflict between the planet’s two warring sides: Omni-Tek and the clans. Existing areas of Rubi-Ka will be opened up for control by player organizations. A “controller” is purchased by the organization and placed in the area they wish to hold. The controller then mines notum, the element unique to Rubi-Ka used in advanced nano-technology across the galaxy. Members will gain personal and organizational benefits and advantages from their notum mine, including skill and experience bonuses, land-holder titles, and more. The exciting part is that a controller can be destroyed by enemies such as other players and creatures within the world. Protection of the controller will be managed through placing permanent towers in the surrounding area. Towers will have both defensive and offensive abilities, and a tower’s attributes will be based on the cumulative skills and abilities of members in the organization. Booster owners can also place personal, temporary towers in almost any area for time-limited bonuses. More details will be announced in the coming weeks and months, starting with a live chat today at 2pm Pacific Standard Time on the massively multiplayer gaming site Unknownplayer, www.unknownplayer.com, featuring Anarchy Online Game Director, Gaute Godager. Funcom now plans to make both booster packs and expansion packs in the future with each serving a separate purpose. As with an expansion pack, a booster pack requires the original game in order to play. It will add benefits for those who own the booster but will still allow non-owners to participate in new gameplay aspects. For more information, please visit www.anarchy-online.com or www.funcom.com. Credit Exploit

An exploit has been discovered in AO by the Funcom staff. Here is the Headline from the AO official site... Credit Exploit by Customer Services Department - Fri, 02 Aug, 2002 On Wednesday (31.07.02), a rather nasty exploit involving in-game credits was found and disabled. However, we were saddened to discover that this exploit was very actively used by many organisation leaders to produce massive amounts of credits within the game. Community Answers

The Anarchy Online Bulletin Board in the Community Corner, has been posting a series of Community Answers to address player's questions and concerns. The latest set of answers, Part 5, has just been posted and covers Patch Information, Trade Skill requirements, Looting Messages, and more. These are quite informative and worth the read. It's nice to see that Funcom is attempting to keep the public up-to-date on issues with AO.

AO Trojan

A few weeks ago, Ole Schreiner, Director of Funcom Customer Service, released this warning about a third party tool that contains a trojan. I thought it might be a good idea to post it even though it isn't 'new' news since the program is probably still floating around out there. Here is the announcement... It has come to our attention that there is a small program being distributed within the player community called AOtradev250.exe or a version name thereof. AOtradev250.exe is classed as a Trojan Horse, a virus that can be used to search your computer for username and passwords. Funcom Customer Service does not under any circumstances support any third party tools to be run with Anarchy Online. You as users of the Internet should always be extremely careful downloading any programs unless you are absolutely certain the distributor can be trusted. This incident shows that a Trojan Horse can be hidden in what is seemingly a "cool tool". It has come to our attention that some of our players have used this program, letting a "hacker" get access to their player account and abused it. This is very unfortunate but unfortunately something Funcom can not take responsibility for. Funcom policy is very simple. We strongly advice not to use any 3rd party tools and we are not responsible for any consequences, or liable for any issues that may occur from running any 3rd party applications. We will ban all accounts where username and passwords have come to other persons than the account-owners attention, but will not actively search for these accounts. We take full responsibility of our own player database, but do not take responsibility over a player's computer. Included here are two links that explain more about the program. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.netdevil.html http://www3.ca.com/Virus/Virus.asp?ID=10948 "Read last article we had on the subject":/content/news/articles/3442L Regards, Ole Schreiner Director of Customer Service

Possible Sneak Peeks

Dai-Galean sent me some goodies to post here for you guys. There is a place available for comments if you would like to make them. Keep in mind his quote when speculating! Here as you can see are some shots of things that might be coming into the game. As I said these are things that might come into game in time to come. But some sneak peaks never hurt anyone. But as you know when I send these out "No I am not going to say what they are, where they are or when". This leaves it up to you guys to speculate and discuss.
