Pottermore is 'Online Experience' for Harry Potter

For the past week, gamers have been wondering if the secret Pottermore site would turn out to be a Harry Potter MMO. Well, it turns out that is not the case. At least, not in the strictest sense of the term. Author J.K. Rowling officially announced today that "Pottermore is a free website that builds an exciting online experience around the reading of the Harry Potter books."

So what does that mean, exactly? Think of Pottermore as a way to experience the stories through a game, an encyclopedia and store. Rowling will be sharing Harry Potter information she's been hoarding for years, which users will be able to uncover as they navigate through the site.

According to the Telegraph, readers will go on a journey through each book and experience significant scenes from each chapter. They'll be issued a wand, placed into a Hogwarts house and interact with various characters. They'll also be able to challenge other users to duels and add comments, drawings and pictures to their profile.

According to Newsday, Rowling has written 18,000 words of new Potter material for the site. "We've had a lot of requests for online games," she said. "I wanted to pull it back to reading."

Perhaps the biggest announcement is that Pottermore will be the exclusive place to purchase Harry Potter e-books, which is a first for the series. Pottermore launches in October, but check back on July 31 to find out how you can get the chance to enter the site early. For more details, watch Rowling's announcement video below.
