You say, 'Hail, Librarian Hemfar'

Librarian Hemfar says, 'Vasha, friend. I am the second-born of Keikolin the Enlightened, the most knowledgeable dragon of the Six. I am to aid in the education of drakkin and all who choose to enlighten their minds. I am a collector of artifacts and one of the founders of the Written Word and the Wanderlust Guild so we may learn from books and life. I have a unique gift that you may partake in if you [aid] in my work. Or you may simply ask me what [lore] I have gathered from artifacts in these lands.'

You say, 'aid'

Librarian Hemfar says, 'Yes, indeed. I have been given a sight-gift from Lady Keikolin. In many artifacts I can see within them and through the eyes of those they belonged to. It allows me to create a history that will become part of this library. Should you find any artifacts in the surrounding lands, bring them to me and I shall reward you and be able to add to the [volumes] of our great library.'

You say, 'volumes'

Librarian Hemfar says, 'There are many creatures present and past that lived in these mountains, including the ogres that once lived in this very city. What exactly happened to them and their kind is somewhat of a mystery, but given time and the right artifacts, we shall learn more. I can reward you if you bring artifacts to me. Then, you may ask what [lore] and legend is available as people bring me artifacts and I can share the history with you when it is scribed.'

You say, 'lore'

Librarian Hemfar says, 'I've received artifacts from these lands and have information about them available. If you have an artifact that you would like information about, please give it to me. Otherwise, I can share from the library I've begun.'

The Scale of Veeshan

The motivations of Veeshan may never be clear, even to her own brood. It is unknown why but before she departed Norrath she gifted her younglings with a portion of her essence, a sampling of her bloodline. This exxence took the shape of a great scale from Veeshan's armored chest, over her heart. This scale is the single most powerful and important artifact for the dragons of Veeshan's brood. It radiates with the essence of what it is to be one of the brood of Veeshan, healing those of the brood that are sick and bringing clarity and power to all the berood.

The dragons of the Nest built an extravagant shrine to shelter and honor the relic given to them by Veeshan. It was their greatest treasure and their most precious secret. It brought luck, fertility and strength to every dragon, hatchling, egg and dragonkin that lived in the Nest. The Scale of Veeshan was one of the primary factors for the decision made by those ancient dragons to hide away from the world. The safety of their eggs was the only concern greater than the safekeeping of their relic.

The shrine, called Ashengate, the Reliquary of Scale, was a grand, open-air structur of old stone, obsidian, and elemental features. Each dragon species contributed to building the reliquary in their own way. It is a monument of rare beauty and architecture that is representative of the elegance and strength of dragon kind.

The shrine had five appointed guardians. The greatest among the five guardians was Lethar the Black. Lether was the greatest dragon of the Nest and was given the honor of being the Elite Scale Guardian among the guardians fo the reliquary. The others were the best of their own breeds, each powerful and clever in their own rights. The red was called Sothgar the Wildfire, he was fierce and impulsive with great cunning. The blue was known as Selay the Cascade, wise and careful, known for her sage advice and unrelenting determination. The green was Vergalid, he was said to have been hatched from an egg carried down a river on a broad leaf. Glenicae was nearly a rival in power to Lethar, but she held no ambition and contented herself in the company of her kin and the light of the Scale of Veeshan. What was not known by all was that Lethar and Selay loved one another, but in keeping with dragon law, never formed the relationship they often dreamed of.

Only a short time ago, a band of drakkin set out to the mountains to reclaim the scale for all dragon kind. Their fate remains a mystery.

The Making of Murdunk

Murdunk did not start hist journey in life as any normal ogre. Even in his early years, his aptitude for handling the blade and besting his opponents was extraordinary. As was the way of ogres and most followers of the Warlord, Rallos Zek, the only true test was to put a warrior marked for greatness up against the best of them all -- for the ogres, this was Chief Dronuk Rockjaw.

Murdunk was the youngest challenger to face Dronuk and they met in the arena of the war council's hall on the top level of the city of NOkk. As their blades sliced through the air and the ring of countless parries rang out, it became clear to all, including Dronuk, that the younger warrior was allowing Dronuk to win - a near fatal error.

Dronuk, despleased with Murdunk's mercy, raised his axe and with unmatched precision, cut the lobe from Murdunk's right ear. Dronuk bellowed that he would have Murdunk's head on a spike to stand in the great city of Nokk unless Murdunk showed his true force. And with that Dronuk got his wish.

Murdunk lifted his crude greatsword with an effortless heave of his massive shoulders and brought it to Dronuk's neck at such speed that the chief was caught completely off guard -- a feat no one had accomplished. Dronuk's head was Murdunk's for the taking. Fully aware that to show any weakness now might surely mean Murdunk's death later, he quickly used the might of hs forearms and wrists to swing back the great blade and with a might lunge at Dronuk he knocked the chief off his feet and knocked him unconscious with the hilt of his sword at his temple.

When Dronuk awoke, he did so with a great smile to see Murdunk kneeling before him. He stood quickly and with great pride and walked into the city with Murdunk. For some years, Murdunk was under the direct tutelage of the great chief. As soon as Murdunk was old enough, he went out to Ogre's Stomp ni the moors near Nokk to complete his journey to becoming a true warrior and respected adult -- a ritual that lasts one night and day.

The day Murdunk returned from the moors, he was dubbed Warlord Murdunk, the commander of the mighty Rallosian Legions -- a most unexpected honor.

The First Shades of Zek Vol. I

As the war on the Plane of Earth ended,King Beltron Wulfnor began to lose his grip on life, foregoing the comforts of his palatial fineries in Valdeholm, he spent his last hours in Krithgor. He wanted to spend his last moments near his giants and all the Rallosians who served in the war. He had lived a full life and seen much and was ready to give his flesh and spirit to Rallos Zek and pass the throne down to his sone, Odeen.

After spending many hours behind closed doors with his son, the loreseekers were brought to prepare Beltron for his final breath and to secure safe passage into the afterlife. The giants believed that upon death, they would live once again as warriors at their maker's side. They never feared death because of the honor it would bring them -- to stand next to their warlord, Rallos Zek, was something many giants looked forward to.

Finally, Beltron's last breath escaped. Odeen removed the crown and placed it on his head as the loreseekers blessed him with all the strength and courage of his father. Then the body was prepared for the progression into the House WUlfnor chamber of the Frostcrypt.

Thousands of giants made the march from Krithgor to Valdeholm, the great giant city to the north. Their heads held highh, proud that their king would be standing with his god, they marched for hours chanting a war prayer created by the first king of the giants, King Harfange the Black, who was said to have been given it by Rallos Zek himself.

Svard dar istadd-
Alska kerdu vargadrum
Ayx! Ayx!

And so the giants marched, shaking the hillsides with their booming voices until they reached the frozen Flateye Lake. From here, only the loreseekers and nobles were allowed to continue into the barrow chiseled beneath the icy lake. From the walls of Valdeholm above, the giants all watched as the loreseekers flawlessly rearranged themselves in a formation to march single file ito the crypt. [See Volume II for more]

===========================================

The First Shades of Zek Vol. II

The procession carried the body of King Beltron into the crypt and disappeared from view.

The burial rites were well progressing as they normally did when a king died. Many wods and blessings, incantations and prayers. Then it happened.

Only one survivor, Loreseeker Yrgar (it was his quill that was found in the Serpent Spine Mountains that this reading was taken from) was able to tell the tale of what he saw in that chamber. His memory remained bewildered and confused by what exactly happened, even though his eyes did not betray him.

As the loreseekers wafted purify smoke over the body of the king, his skin began to darken. The loreseekers continued, but began to look to one another with trepidation. When runes began to burn and curl across the king's skin, the loreseekers stopped. Something was not right. All around them, the ice bagan to shed a blue-green vapor. The room seemed to be heating up with no explanation.

Then the voice of a god shook the mountains from the sky to the crypt's icy core.

"BETRAYERS OF YOUR MAKER! RETISCENT FOOLS! A time of war falls upon you and your cower like rats? A lesson will be learned this day and for all your days. You will know and love the endless struggle of war. Unto you shall fall a darkness eternal. You have forsaken your lineage, and so it shall destroy you."

And with the words of the Warlord, Rallos Zek, still echoing off the icy halls, the body of King Beltron rose from the srcophagus. Thought the war on Earth was so long ago, the god had not forgotten or forgiven Beltron Wulfnor and his family who remained in Valdeholm while the Rallosian Army shed blood. And for that cowardice, Rallos Zek would have his vengeance in Beltron himself.

Beltron's body was awash in a sickly aqua glow. The runes on his body began to glow and as he opened his eyes and eerie blue shone from them. He picked up the axes he was buried with and brandished them, holding still for one small moment, sureying the room.

THen it started and didn't stop. In the wildest blood frenzy ever known, the king cut down every living creature near to him. And for each one that died, they too rose to be like Beltron with aqua skin branded by runes. They became beholden to their god. They became Shades of Zek. It would be their duty to hunt down and kill all of the Krithgor giants, to bring them into their fold. They believe that if they win the war -- to kill all the living Krithgor -- the curse will at last be lifted.

Still, that day has not come. And still, they continue the hunt.

===========================================

Lineage of the Nokk Ogres

Near the end of the Elder Age, Rallos Zek, the Warlord, finally came to create his ogre children, many years after he created his giants. He made the ogres out of sturdy bone and resilient olive-colored flesh and placed them within the Serpent Spine Mountains on Tunaria -- the continent that later became known as Antonica. With the giants, goblins, and orcs created, the foundation for the Warlord's Rallosian Empire were in place.

The Spine ogres built a great city carved into the stone of the Serpent's Toe cliffs and called it Nokk, named after the chief architect of the city. Years later, as they grew stronger and fiercer, laying waste to all the creatures and civilizations around them, they built the impenetrable Fortress of Krithgor to the north of Nokk that was more strategically viable for a great invasion that the world would never forget.

Rallos Zek gifted his ogres with a healthy intellect that allowed them a capacity for higher learning of magic arts and battle strategy. This coupled with their stature and brawn made them a feared foe among the mortal races. As ogre magi walked the lands, all would cower, or smarter yet, run for their lives.

Chief Dronuk Rockjaw, ordained by Rallos Zek himself, was the fiercest ogre warrior ever to be created. It was promised that his bloodline shared with that of the most powerful magi, Hemska Thoots, would bring forth the chief's heirs.

And so it went for a few hundred years. The lineage of the Spine ogres began with Dronuk and ended with Gekkdar. There were only two chiefs before Gekkdar and they were Reetuk and Pinput. It was not long before this new race was ruined by the very things that made them feared -- unequaled power.

Like Father, Like Son -- Lethar and Dyn`leth

Veldyn lived two more years after watching her son mature into an elf-dragon child. she was scarred from the acid Lethar rained on her on the outside and by deceit and pain inside. When she finally passed on, her son grieved for her briefly but that passed for him quickly enough. Dyn`leth found his new form pleasing once he got used to the change. His father told him that he was unique, that he was descended from Veeshan and was one of her brood. Eventually he showed him the Scale of Veeshan and even allowed Dyn'leth to help dig the demented Vergalid from the rocks to force him out of the shrine. Dyn`leth watched his father all the time, always interested in whatever he did.

Lethar was pleased by his son. He was strong enough, considering his small size, and there was the chance that he might transform further and become somethign greater. He exposed Dyn`leth to the scale often, hoping its power would help DYn`leth become stronger and grow to me (be) more dragon than elf. After all, Lethar had used the magic of the scale to create Dyn`leth.

Dyn`leth learned much from his father. He learned about the dragons of the brood of Veeshan. He learned of the Nest. He learned of the power of the scale. He learned far more than his father thought he could. He also learned greed, pride, rage and ambition from his father, eventually rivalling him in all those aspects. It was not long before he knew enough about the scale and the way his father used it to form a plan of his own to gain control of Veeshan's scale and fulfill his own ambitions -- to rule over his father and create his own empire. He fancied himself on the path to being a god among the common creatures around him.

The power of the scale is in the blood of the brood of Veeshan. That blood is in Dyn`leth in part. But it is all that Lethar and the true dragons are. The magic of the scale is bound to Dyn`leth very differently, something he learned over many years of experimenting without his father's knowledge.

Before Vergalid was allowed to flee the shrine, Dyn`leth found every opportunity to get to the scale while Lethar was away and turned it on Vergalid to test it. Dyn`leth was able to force the dragon to obey his commands by drawing the dragon's power into himself through the scale. This very process was the reverse of what Lethar had used on Veldyn to create Dyn`leth. He uchanneled magic from himself through the scale and into Veldyn.

One seemingly arbitrary evening, Lethar found Dyn`leth with the scale. With a cunning smile, Dyn`leth focused the power of the scale on his father. He weakened the great dragon, but could not gain complete control of him. Lethar advanced slowly, painfully, against the force of the scale. Dyn`leth knew that he would die if he could not find a way to stop Lethar. He bluffed. Lethar, for all of his paranoia, was still at his very core the Scale Guardian.

Dyn`leth announced he had found a way to destroy the scale and that he would do so unless Lethar promised to do his bidding. Weakened and believing his son's threat, he agreed. His half-dragon son would be the controller of the scale. This agreement has remained to this day.

Constant contact with the scale has changed Dyn`leth. He, too, has become a guardian of the scale in his own way. For years he has used it to enslave and recruit into his growing empire all manner of creature that wanders the mountains. Though he does not know it, the scale controls him as much as he controls his father.

===========================================

Legacy of Chief Gekkdar of Nokk

When Rallos Zek ordained the first chief of the Spine ogres, Dronuk Rockjaw, he gave him the Amulet of Chieftains. It was not fully known what powers the amulet possessed or what effect it had, but it was treasured and reversed as an item of the gods.

What was known was that only the direct bloodline of the Rockjaws and Thoots could touch the amulet. Any other who dared touch it would turn to ash. So as a chief may lay dead on a battleground, only the true heir to the chief could remove the amulet and place it around his neck to assume leadership of the Spine ogres.

It is said the elder shaman wove his ward around the Amulet of Chieftains to prevent any false heir from taking control of the ogres. Whether they were aware or not, the amulet harbored another magic. Each chief's soul became bound to the amulet as soon as it was placed around their neck. His sould could only pass in death as the amulet passed on to the true heir, completing the cycle of the chief's rule and ensuring only the rightful leader of the ogres possessed the amulet.

Now, as no heir lives to take the amulet from Gekkdar, his soul is forever bound to Amulet of Chieftains and his spirit lingers between life and death and likely will for an eternity unless a true heir of the Rockjaws finds the amulet and places it around his own neck.

Krithgorian Burial Rites

An account of the ritual burial of all giants.

Vundenclag Blessings

The Krithgor giants, as a sturdy and somewhat spiritual people, conduct the Vundenclag Blessing as the last breath escapes the body should time and preparations allow. The name of the fallen giant is contemplated and whispered thre times -- one to secure the spirit, one to expedite its passage to the next realm, and one to set it on its journy.

Past-Breath Yukadig

The Past-Breath Yukadig is performed on giants who died without the presence of a loreseeker to issue the Vundenclag Blessing. The Past-Breath Yukadig is done by breathing into the hand and passing it over the fallen giant's mouth to simulate the giving of the last breath. The name is then contemplated and whispered once, simply to send protection to the already departed spirit.

Gidgund Winds of Lasting

Gidgund inces is drawn over the body to strengthen the constitution of the spirit. It is sometimes called Purity Smoke. This must be done by a loreseeker learned in the shaman arts. The smoke must be allowed to settle over the body in order to strengthen its aura. Only a shaman may deterine if the aura is completed and encircles the body of the dead. This incense will strengthen the flesh for burial and preserve it.

Eternal Battleshrouds

Each body will be wrapped by war-blessed linens. These woven or crafted pieces must each contain at least one stitch or more of thread used in worn battle armor. This will protect the body and the spirit from damage and danger in the afterlife. All weapons considered essential to the giant's survival and battle in the next life must be buried with him. At the time the essentials are placed into the crypt, the loreseeker must remove any dynasties required to be passed on from father to son.

Iddugind Seal

Finally, when the process is completed, the body is sealed by a loreseeker through the Krithgorian Evenprayer. This prayer shall never be written and only uttered. It is only known to the eldest of loreseekers whose sole purposes are to perform this prayer. This prayer acknowledges and recognizes the wisdom of the gods and asks for their prtection. It is not a prayer to be spoken out of proper turn.

The Wings of War

The houses of WUlfnor Fridleif, and Harfange are separated into three royal chambers in the Frostcrypt. Warriors and commoners also have chambers in the Wings of War. It is paramount that each giant be laid to rest in the appropriate area. Commoners will be buried in royal chambers provided it was earned by servitude or loyality.

===========================================

Dyn`leth the Dragonborn

When Dyn`leth reached maturity he changed suddenly and dramatically. It started in the evening. He was awakened by an itch. He scratched and tried to go back to sleep, but the itch persisted. It spread over his entire body and was agonizingly relentless.

Dyn`leth dove into the clear waters of the shrine and scrubbed himself with ever increasing force. When his mother came to him, she was stoped by the sight of him.

In the pool floated patches of skin. Where they had come off of Dyn`leth's body were patches of dark, cold scales. Her son's hair was falling out in clumps and underneath were more black, serpentine scales. When the itching stopped and Dyn`leth stepped from the water, half of his body was slick and black and covered with gleaming scales. his head was sleek with them and above his ears were small ivory horns. The back of his hands were covered with fine glimmering black scales. When he looked at his reflection in the water, he felt that he was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.

Veldyn screamed, she could not do otherwise. Dyn`leth turned from gazing at his own reflection to see Lethar enter the chamber. For the first time since his son was born, Lethar smiled. His plan had worked, only differently than he had expected.

When Dyn`leth was born, Lethar was tempted to eat the mother and child, for he had hoped for a child that was more like him and not so like his mother. He stayed his wrath, turning it upon Vergailid a fellow dragon protector of the broken shrine of Veeshan's Scale who remained trapped for some time in the depths of the shrine. For years, Lethar kept his family away from the trapped dragon and made no mention of Selay, his tru love, and he kept them away from Veeshan's Scale lest his true identity be revealed -- that he was born a black dragon and was charged with the protection of Veeshan's greatest gift to her children -- a scale from her chest. With the other draon protectors injured or killed during Solusek Ro's vengeance against Tunare, eh intended to call the scale his own.

When he saw his son's transformation he was very pleased. he strode over to the mother and son and stood over them in his assumed elven form and smiled. He then stood back and showed them his true form. His skin contorting and wings sprouting from his back, a great hulking black form unfirled before them.

When he stood above them as a Lethar the Scale Guardian he roared a mighty roar and sent his acidic breath skyward in triumph. The breath fell into the shrine, causing no harm to the stones nore to Dyn`leth. Drops of acid fell upon Veldyn and burned her, but her screams of pain only heightened the delight that Lethar felt in the birth of Dyn`leth as his dragon born elf-child.
