I play an Ogre warrior. I can hit the map key (backspace) and see a map when in Oggok, Innothule swamp, and North Qeynos. But when I am in Rathetear Mountains, Western Karana, and the Plane of Knowledge, no such map comes up.

What gives? Do I have to buy maps in-game for some locations? Is my install bugged?

Only the maps for the cities and the adjacent zones have maps of them (with the stupid exception of Butcherblock), as well as the occasional out of the way place. Other than that, you have to make your own map, or download ones other people made and put them into your maps folder. EQ Atlas has most of the maps, but my favorite site (which has all of the LDoN maps too) is http://mapfiend.eq-toolbox.com/. There are several versions of each map, sometimes. I would give more of a tutorial, but that's what the map site is for...go and check it out, play around a bit.

It is really easy to go to the website that oneiromancer listed and download the files. You can download the maps individually or get it in one big (3 meg)or so file.

It is amazing how big a difference it makes to have the maps for the various zones.

The only complaint that I have about maps is the fact that they are 3 dimensional. What I mean is that lines that are drawn at one elevation are only visible if you are at that elevation. On some zones this is not a big deal, but many of the outdoor zones that dont have different levels still have this problem. This can sometimes make it hard to see what you are looking for.

There is a height filter button on the left hand side, which toggles the evelvation thingy on or off. Depending on what zone you are in, as you say, depends whether it is more useful to have it on or off.

By the by its also very useful, to turn the fade setting down on the window, right click on the bar at the top of the window for the options, that way you can keep it up as a kind of overlay, if you're a bit lost or legging it, without obscuring your view of the world about you.

Thanks for the heads up. I apparently need a bit more info as I tried to add maps for PoK and W Karana, and still get nothing. The mapfiend site, strangely, has no info on how to actually make the things *work*, other than to have Legacy of Ykesha which I should have (I bought Evolutions).

I have 4 files related to PoK, for instance:
poknowledge.txt
poknowledge_1.txt
poknowledge_2.txt
poknowledge_3.txt

The downloaded file is the _1 file. The original was a zero byte file, which I replaced.

The file name without the number is the default map. The ones with numbers are the "user" maps. You have to select those numbers on the map window for them to show up. The ones you download from Mapfiend are defaulted to the "1" slot but you can easily change that by changing the file name...I usually make all my maps the default slot. The only exceptions would be if you want new versions of the maps that come with EQ, because if you change those default ones the game will re-download them when the Patcher runs. (I think the Mapfiend forum is where all the instructions are, by the way.) Any zone that you have ever been to will have the 1-2-3 files created the first time you go there, although they will all be empty until you overwrite it yourself. Anyway, like I said, on the map UI window you can select or deselect the main and 1-2-3 maps, so check those out first. It may be defaulted to deselect the user maps.

The only other possibility I can think of is a simple one: are you too far zoomed in? Sometimes the map zoom changes when you zone.

If you get it to work, and think that the color schemes suck on the user-made maps, you can use a program called Mappie to change all instances of one color line at once. It's pretty cool for some of those maps which were done by someone with a different color map background than the rest of us. (Although I think some of them are light colors intentionally so the map is like an overlay when it is faded.)

You do have LOY expansion dont you? Pok has a map I use it often.

I noticed my machine does not display a map of Butcher block, but Elne clare's machine will. This is true of shadeweavers thicket as well. Maybe the teen has downloaded something as she plays on Elne's machine.

Something must be bugged then. I have installed LoY, and yet 1) these maps don't work, and 2) My bank is only ?8 slots and not ?16 like the manual says.

Maybe its because I first got PoP which is EQ and PoP expansion only; then I bought Evolutions which is EQ and all expansions through LoY. I installed Evolutions on top of PoP, got no errors and to my newbie brain it looked like it was working.

I wonder if I uninstall the whole thing & reinstall only Evolutions, extreme but probably would work. But I don't want to lose my char!

If you uninstall then reinstall you wont lose your character, as toons are kept on sony servers. What you will lose are the friends list, hotkey setups and bazaar price data if you have a trader.

Make sure LoY is registared correctly. You very well could have installed fine and just not have it registtared to your account properly.

Click the update exspansions button no the server selection screen. If you are not registared there you will need your key code at that point.

You may also try a through file check when logging in to see if comp missed a few on DL.

sbs you were correct. Even though the update expansions screen was fine, and the game showed all expansions installed and working, because I didn't put in the registration code I got nothing. Thanks all.
