It's selfish for people to bash someone for wanting to get paid to provide a service. I've tried several websites in my day, one successful and it was a TON of work. And people like donating less than the site creators like begging for it. I could see an issue if he sold email lists or allowed advertising spam uncontrollably but he didn't.
It's not as if he sold advertising space to McDonald's or something though. He sold it to an organization a great many EQ players are morally opposed to.
I used to run a site, Watershipdown.org. Yeah, I'm a geek
Anyway, back in its day it was
the place for a spot of research about the novel, the film, other works of Richard Adams, etc. It had web forums, email hosting, a listserv, live chat, plenty of material I tried to keep updated, polls, contests, FAQs, you name it. Among the community there was a strong sentiment against those who came to the site because they were assigned the book to read in class and figured they'd just swipe the answers to study questions from the site instead of reading and enjoying the book. Now, you may not care that people did so, but a very large part of the WD community did. Eventually I got kind of tired of running it. It had ballooned larger than I had anticipated, the web hosting was getting pricey, and I just didn't have the enthusiasm to keep at it. Now if the publishers of Cliff Notes had come to me and offered to buy the site and advertise it as a place students could get quick answers without reading the novel, would I have taken it? I can say pretty definately that I would not have. the site was a labor of love and when the love ran out (so to speak), I just closed up shop. Well, the email list still exists today on Yahoo Groups.. heh. On the other hand, if Bob's Pet Supply wanted to advetise there, I would have been happy to take Bob's money. Granted,
neither happened but I'm just giving my perspective
I really see a site like this one or the class sites as the same. A place where people can discuss things and share information and thoughts to help one another. Yes, there's "spoiler" information, but it's submitted by the community to help one another without a desire for profit. And, even after reading your epic walkthrough you still have to log into EQ and do it. Yantis/IGE is the very opposite of that. You want a sword? For $22.90 it's yours. Lvl 65 Mage? Pay up and you won't have to work for it or learn any tips and tricks about the class. No need to learn or work, just cough up and it's all yours.
AllaKhazam's and sites like it aren't about turning a profit (though obviously Alla wants to make a living wage, I doubt he's getting millions of dollars running this joint) but about a love for the game and a desire to help the community. Yantis is all about making money at the expense of the community. How can one sell out to the other and still retain a measure of respect?
