Hmmm... I don't know Singall. I played my chanter back in the day with no twinking at all. I honestly found that the first 8 levels were the most useful pet levels of all. Past that they become steadily less useful.
The pet isn't that tough, but it doesn't have to be. It just has to survive the battle. Since it can't follow any of your orders, you can't do much about whether it tanks or you do early on anyway, so you're going to be getting hit most of the time whether you use the pet or not. I just remember that I could kill significantly faster with the pet then without. Chanters have totally **** poor damage dealing ability early on. You basically drop a choke (or whatever it is at that level), and engage in melee. Most of the time, your pet will just be an extra dot anyway. Your pet will do pretty good damage in relation to your own, especially for those first 8 levels. I never had a problem with pets dying too often, and so never had a problem with being able to afford tiny daggers. Honestly, a low level chanter has so few tools to work with that if his pet is getting killed constantly, he's probably just fighting stuff that's too tough for him anyway. I'm very much in the "kill lots of moderately tough mobs" camp when it comes to exp grinding. Necro and mages are able to use their pets to take on yellows and reds early on, even untwinked. Enchanters simply can't do that, pet or no.
But that's just my rememberances. I started that character a loooooong time ago, so maybe things have changed.
