Um... Just to add a bit of info though.
While it's true that your *rate* of riposte is exactly the same regardless of weapon type, the amount of damage you do with a riposte is based on the weapon you have.
So... A big lumbering 40/50 2h weapon will do it's base 40 damage (with other calcs tossed in on top) everytime you riposte. That 16/20 weapon will do a base of 16 damage on each riposte. Since the number of ripostes you'll get are constant, you will do more riposte damage over time with the big slow weapon instead of the small fast weapon.
Interestingly enough, you will also *take* less riposte damage from the mob if you're using a big slow weapon as well. Since the rate of ripostes from the mob is directly affected by the rate of your own attacks, if you attack less often (presumably for more damage per hit), you'll get riposted less often and therefore take less total riposte damage over time.
This is one of the key arguments used in the DW 1h weapons vs 2h weapon for MT debate. With some exceptions at the very high end, you will usually dish out more damage over time dual wielding small fast 1h weapons. But when fighting mobs that riposte and/or have small fast attacks of their own, using a big 2h weapon often evens things out. The MT's damage often isn't a factor, but the amount of damage taken is. In the case of fighting a riposting mob that also attacks fast, a 2h weapon gains in two ways. You get riposted for less damage *and* you get more damage per riposte of your own (which will be a greater number since the mob attacks more often). That riposte damage will be less significant when fighting a mob that hits once every 3 seconds for 1k damage vs one that hits once every second for 300.
And that's largely why 2h weapons have begun to be prefered for MTs. Mostly this is seen as part of the knight vs warrior MT debate, but even some warriors will use 2h weapons for tanking depending on the situation.
