Admittedly I am somewhat technologically illiterate. Hence the reason I came here, where people are, for the most part, helpful and nice. So Czaemon the all-knowing, are you going to offer some help or just taunt me with your obviously superior intellect?

you don't need any program.

in windows, rightclick ---> rename --> filename.jpg instead of filename.gif, or whatever it is currently.

Lol! Czae... Bad man! No bisquit!!!

That wont work btw. Renaming the file extension just tells Windows to use a different program to open the file. If the file is in bmp format (the default from screenshot), it's still a bmp file, even if you rename it .jpg. All you'll accomplish by renaming it is making the file unusable since the OS will try to open it with the wrong viewer format.

Assuming you have a windows operating system built sometime this millenia (yeah. that joke never gets old!), open up the file directory. Double click on the file. It *should* open up the bmp file in some sort of default windows viewer program (which could vary depending on the exact OS release you are using).

Once you've opened it up in pretty much any viewer program, hit file->Save as. A dialogue box should open up allowing you to rename the file. There should also be some sort of pull down that will allow you to choose what formate to save the file in (which will typically be the list of formats that viewer knows how to read). Select jpeg (jpg), make sure to rename the file and hit "ok".

That should work just fine. Some viewers might have a separate area where you can convert different file types, so you may have to hunt around. But I think most of the default ones loaded with windows should allow you to do it right in the saveas feature.

Add the following line to your eqclient.ini file:

ScreenshotType=jpg

Edit: Sorry, misread the post. This will save future screenshots as jpgs. You'll still have to do what gabji said for your existing screenshots.

Pssst! Czae... Shoulda just played that off like you were messing with him... ;)

That's actually really funny. It's one of the "classics" of computer stupidities (check out that site, it's good for hours of fun!). Basically, Windows holds on to some old and clunky DOS based methods for file naming. Even though pretty much every OS on the planet uses file headers to declare what kind of file something is (with extensions used, but only as a means of sorting files really), Windows actually uses it *first* due to backwards compatibility with DOS.

You can actually totally ***** up your computer pretty easily, since Windows now has a handy "open with" utility. If you right click a file, you'll often see an "open with" button. If you select it, you can map what utility to open that file with. There's also a handy "always use this" button, which essentially globally changes the associations within your Windows profile. So... if you for example remap your profile to always open .exe files with notepad (just an example, don't try this at home!), you'll basically break your system. If you don't have multiple user sessions defined on your box, the only way to fix it is to boot from a CD (although safe mode might work since that shouldn't load the profile).

It's pretty brain dead. The OS *should* look at the first X bytes of the file and see if there's a valid file header and use that utility first, then if it doesn't find one, fall back to the extension on the file (assume it's a file in a particular format, but written by an OS that doesn't put headers in). For some unfathomable reason Windows does it the other way around (actually just ignores file headers as far as I can tell).

The age old: "just change the extension" idea is hardly new... Still doesn't work, but it's not new. ;)
