Since this is the focus of your essay, I will try to offer some relevant input.
When writing anything, always consider your reader first. You and people on these forums are deeply familiar and experienced with roleplaying but some of your readers may only have heard of it in passing.
First, you must define what it means to roleplay and illustrate the similarities and differences in roleplaying good and evil. When defining evil roleplaying, I think it is important to note that "evil" does not equate to "mean." As we all know, many gamers make this mistake.
I now play a Human Monk and I roleplay her but not in the way some might think. I do not say 'thee' or 'thou' and I do not say things like 'I must meditate prior to the encounter.' My roleplaying consists of what I do
not do. It is quite simple. I do not talk about real life things. To me, that is roleplaying.
I used to play a Dark Elf Necromancer and I role played her with more flair. But again, I did not always do it directly but with emotes. 'Reyla grins as her foes disentigrate' Reyla can not help but to envy her dead comrades' and so forth.
When I did roleplay evilly in conversarions, I was careful not to be mean but rather selfish and indifferent. "You may group with me, and I will fight
by your side but be advised, an increase in my own power is all I will fight
for."
The benefits?
I cannot pinpoint any benefits to roleplaying evil over good but roleplaying benefits in general include an outlet for your imagination, an escape from real life concerns and a chance to be like a person you are not.
