Word drops and spell researchFollow

I am the last person who likes to complain about this stuff, but I have to say something this time.

I would think the intent of the research tradeskill would be so that you can obtain the words and research for yourself a spell you need as an alternate route for obtaining the spell via drop.

But the spells drop of mobs that are much higher in level than the level where the spell is usable, and the words are so rediculously rare, that it's almost pointless.

I read Alla's alot, and I play alot, and it seems to be an ongoing theme with this game as a whole: By the time you are tough enough to get item-x, is right when you no longer need item-x.

Sure I'm sure that for level 65 players, demi-lich and Words of Awareness, Words of Expedition, etc, rain from the sky all day long. But that is mid 50's stuff there. By the time a necro can get demi-lich himself (save buying it for vast amounts of plat in the bazaar) demi-lich is old news because you need arch-lich.

You need to be like 10 levels higher than what you are to get stuff that is appropriate for your level.

It's happening alot more at the higher end I notice, the stuff that drops from the toughest mobs I can hope to fight is garbage to me and only goes to the bazaar so lower level toons buy it so I can buy real stuff that is approprate for my level.

Why make a 56 necro spell drop from a level 65 raid encounter? I can understand maybe so that raider can sell it, and I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve it. But why not let the words drop of a yellow or even white to 56 mob every now and then? WHich sometimes they do, but have tou clocked on the loot table for one of the few mobs where this is the case? The loot table is a list of about 30-40 items, so you have to kill the mob 30-40 times to get that spell/words. I don't think I am asking too much or asking for a free ride when I say that if I kill a yellow mob 5 or 6 times or so I should something usefull, item-wise.

I imagine that chorus of "You want everthying just handed to you" might chime in probably here. (and many times I agree with ya'll so I'm right here with ya) But I should be able to use at least SOME the stuff that I bleed and die for. I don't remember a time.. ever .. that I equipped something that dropped off a mob I killed.. well, yes.. the one thing that sticks out, is the Extended Range III item I got from some main spider while soloing Dreadlands.

Basically the rule must be "If it drops for you, it's CRAP to you"

Of course I'm sure it will even itself out at 70.

And I'm sure I will keep looking until I find Demi-Lich in the bazaar and pay thousands for it. That's great but how much fun is that? I don't feel as much of a sense of accomplishment from that. I would much rather scrap it out for the words or for the spell myself, that aint gonna heppen.

I can try and make Augmentation of Death, too.. but you think I can afford to fail the combine on 7000pp words? That is rediculous. I would spend almost all of my life savings doing that exactly TWICE.

The balance of the game is a tad off, IMO.

I mean, I could just kill hill giants all day and shop all night in the baz, but that doesn't seem like as much fun as getting your *** half kicked and barely surviving an encounter and getting that sweet drop you can use, and not just sell because it's a downgrade. I've destroyed stuff I would've killed for as a newb because it's utterly useless to me as of 10 levels ago and it's no drop. /sigh

Maybe I am just in some hell levels right now... I admit it could be that.. but my main complaint is the rediculous rarity of some words and the content they drop from being on average 7-10 levels higher than the level at which the spell(s) they make can be used. (Because at that point, it's all just a buy/sell/plat/economic situation for everyone involved)

/rant off (you know I love ya )

well it's not raid lvl that's for sure..........but ya I know what you mean the words are hard to get(shoot when I was 60 and looking to make Garrison's Superior Sundering I needed Rune of Scintillation which only dropped off of SSRA raid mobs(just like the friggin spell =/). Now I may be wrong in thinking this but I think that research is more of a trade skill to be used as a way of making money.....not a way of getting spells for yourself(but that just might be me....i've never found it worthwhile to make 55+ spells for myself with research.....I'd fail way to much and it was cheaper to just buy the spell.....).

I am often left wondering the same thing. I've been pretty diligent with my wizard doing her research homework all along the way. Though she has always been making spells well below her level. Recently, I've really been working on getting her skilled up because I can't find/can't afford her current spells.

I'm thinking about trying to make practice runes. I have never done this in the past as it seems like a PITA to make them - combining runes was easier. Anyone else tried the practice research route?
