Well to answer the post just up top (all BL have is slow and heh can take a hit well thats what makes a BL a BL and a solo class) ..I am a lvl 70 BL so just out of your range of 55+ .but to let you in on soloing I solo POF c1 easy non stop no down time for 1 aa per 20mins easy zone lol WoS south side names solo easy real easy .. post was right about gear it will come into play but this is with all classes mage ,nec and Bl all good at soloing .But i would take mag. or nec. to pof and out aa him/her
er, minor correction. overall, our avoidance is better than our mitigation. with mob level, zone, gear, AA etc coming into play we might mitigate ok--but usually that's in old world zones.
At level 59, in Temple of Sol Ro, without using my best DoT which happens to be fire-based and would not land. I think those mobs were all red con (61+). This is just spell-based DPS, not counting my pet, and doesn't bring into account crowd-control or any other various utility functions.

I have no information to help you compare the 2 since I've never leveled a mage passed 30, but I have a 57 BST and he solos just fine. You just have to keep in mind where the mob will run since you don't have any snare or root until you get high enough for the snare proc AA. Having slow, buffs, a tough pet and mana efficient pet heals helps you solo quite easily if you keep the no snare thing in mind.
A beastlord would be able to take on harder mobs than a mage b/c of slow. A necro isn't a bad choice either and would solo better than the mage and faster(Notice i said faster not better) than the beastlord......normal i would mention something about the godlike abilities of a shaman >_> but I don't think that's what you want.....
