The Everquest is . . . not dead ?Follow

As always, I find myself unhappy with the MMO I am playing. I've invested a great deal of time and money into MMORPGs and love them, especially the roleplaying aspect of them, but, am never satisfied by them. I'd love, someday to cap my level on a MMO; to get that nice warm fuzzy feeling of "I win teh interweb." ((Only said in character and with a greater degree of eloquence. >.> <.<;; )) but always get stopped in the low-mid levels by a nagging feeling that inevitably leads me to cancel my subscription. So, I found myself ((Again >.<;; )) sitting in front of my PC, hating the fact that, whatever I do, I end up back at where I started, FFXI, ((Which my friends who play there, inevitably drag me back to.)) going over the same 20 levels over and over again and never actually accomplishing anything that I didn't do last month. Today, it occurred to me that FFXI wasn't where I started playing MMORPGs, and was struck by a wave of nostalgia; fond memories of frantically sprinting through Freeport as a low level mage because I was missing the boat ((Not that I knew where it went . . . But catching it seemed like a good idea.)), and then frantically swimming after that boat before getting eaten by something big and nasty, and loving every minute of it.

Before today I had assumed that nobody played Everquest anymore and that since EQII came out ((Which I tried and didn't like too much.)) it was effectively dead. So, yay I guess, Everquest is still alive and I’m hoping to come back and play . . . But, I do have a few questions first ^.^;; ((The point of this long and rambling post that few of you will care about =p ))

1) IS Everquest still alive ? ((While I'm assuming it is, what with the activeness of these forums, I could still be wrong.))

2) I only have the first two expansion packs . . . will I still be able to play ? ((Assuming that I intend to buy them at some point in the future.))

3) Oh ! And is there an unofficial roleplaying server ?

Everquest is alive but it is a mature game now and there are not many lower levels to group with.

Firiona Vie is the supposed roleplay server. Just a warning FV has more cliques than the french parliament and many odd personalities on it. I have found myself being ignored for leaving old guilds and god knows what else there. For some reason FV attracts the socially inept.

However, if you were to restart there you would be lonely in lower levels but you because of the no drop nature of items, you will find very cheap upgrades in the bazaar so you will rapidly become very well equipped for your level. Tradeskillers all buy spider silks, padding, bonechips (necro love these and NO ONE sells them atm *hint*). You would be lonely, but you could be a well off and fairly rich soloer until you reach the mid 40's and find people to group with.

**Nods** Thanks . . . although, I may not get to play after all. I'm getting an error message within the first few seconds of installation ::

"An error ocurred during the move data process:_106

Component : Program Files
File Group : Program Executable Files
File : Airplane_chr.s3d"

**Sigh** This is sounding permanent, but, if anyone knows a way around this, I would be really grateful ^.^;; If it has anything to do with this . . . I'm running it on Windows XP >.> <.<;;

there have been several graphics upgrades over the past few years. So you may want to look at downloading new video drivers.

The first thing you want to do is before you click play on the first little mini screen click the advanced button and do a complete file scan that should help.

That won't work, as I don't have the option to access either of those options. This error occurs during installation of the game . . . To date it has yet to get past 0% without the error occurring, although depending on how I start the installation process, it takes longer to occur.

Can you get to the load screen. If so in the advance option select check files. Also if you do desided to play you need to work on getting into your 50's that is where the game really seems to start It is easy to get a toon to 50 in like 200-250 hrs. If you could find some one to Pl you it would be much faster. I highly suggest buying the DoN expansion right away. It gives you access to the Guild Lobby and Guild Hall which can come in handy. It is not dead and with the latest expansion I am seein lots of new face and old faces comming back.

Well, still no luck with the installation . . . apparently they're allowing people to download a seven day trial which installs both The Ruins of Kunark and the Scars of Vellous . . . I'm hoping that they will have an option to simply start paying a subscription fee at the end of that period. If not . . . **Shrug** Well, it's downloading now, so I'll tell you how it goes in 3 hours time ^.^;;

Once that downloads you should be able to get to the advanced screen and do a file check. It is all about your use code that came with the game when you first bought it. With those codes they will let you just start paying subscription and play.

First off, welcome back! Second, if you are looking for servers with decent low level populations, try stromm, povar, and I believe maelin starpyre as well. Just don't expect to find too mny people in the old newbie zones. These days its tutorial to 10 or 11, then strait to kurns or paludal caverns. That said, you can still find people in the 4 - 13-ish range in east comonlands, also butcherblock from time to time. I still see some brave souls going to blackburrow even though its no longer "in style" so to speak.
Again, welcome back and I hope you enjoy EQ as much as you did in the past! See you in game.

. . . **Sigh** This is really not funny. My download of the game, has now to come to a complete halt. It's been stuck on 2:48 for the last hour . . . So, despite the warm welcolme, it looks like I'll be stuck on FFXI for the rest of my days . . . **Sigh**

((But rate ups for y'all being so friendly ^.^;; ))

One thing you can still say about EQ is it's still technologically finicky and memory intensive. Smiley: grin

It's worth it though. Hang in there.

is amazing how many came back to this "dead" game ;-P

People seem to have the wrong impression concerning this. I CAN'T play Everquest, despite being desperate to. CD installation consistently faces an error, while the download from the site simply freezes. If ANYONE knows a way for me to play the game . . . I'd be eternally grateful.

**Sigh**

To be honest, I'm surprised that anyone can comeback, regardless of how much they'd like to, as it's sure difficult enough.

UPDATE :: This may be slightly premature, but; w00t! Having read the scratched Everquest CD thread, I may have found a way to actually play the game! Hurray! **Happy Dance**

Over the past few weeks I have seen a steady, although still low, return rate of folks who left for WoW, EQ2 or whatever.
And with the ability of non-raiders to get decent gear through monster missions (along with good exp compared to what they could get ottherwise) I expect more non-raider types will be coming back as progression is no longer blocked if you dont belong with a serious raid guild (still slow- but that is ok- can have fun and slowly progress).

So no 'tis far from dead. Rez spell was only 65% tho.. lol.

Arioc,

Go buy the Platinum edition , its dirt cheap , and it has the first 7 expansions. You could be up and playing for $20. Welcome back btw , I was gone for a year as well , came back , and I am enjoying it more than ever.

Arioc I'm glad you finally got it working! Just fyi I met two people today that were gone for 1 year or so playing EQ2 and WOW. It seems that a bunch are coming back, and I'm glad they are :)
