Hello all.

A few weeks ago i bought EverQuest new dawn from a game shop. Now ive never played EQ before, but have played other online games of this type.

What i want to know is, whats the game like and is it worth me playing? Ive played FFXI for a long time, but im now having a break from it.

If i do play, how do i get hold of any expansions? Can they be downloaded from the official website or do i have to buy them?

My suggesion is to read through the tutoral found on this site.

Play the ingame tutorial. Remember this game is very mature, meaning most of the population is at a high level...group might not be as easy to come by as you think.

IMHO this game is much more complicated that FFXI...you will spend lots of time in Norrath.

You can buy expansions on the official site of course, or you can try to find them in the stores, but they are becoming less and less available on the shelf.

What server did you start on?

Very difficult game to get into now. By the time you hit level 25ish you will spend 90% of the time Looking for group. If you pick a solo class you can always grind up, but there are plenty of classes that simply can't solo well even with the really good twink gear.

If you have a good friend base of people your level it might be ok, other wise it is almost impossible to level up once you hit 25ish. I have a bunch of 25ish charactors on my account who just sit there because I can not ever find anybody my level LFG. I mean its really said when you do a /who all 23 27 and you find 10 people (and 7 are bazaar mules).

Anymore it seems like about the only thing level in eq is the lvl 70 hardcore players.

This is absolutely not true. At least not on all servers. Plus, higher level players can use shrouds to group with lower ones, and moster missions don't have level requirements. I have toons on Xegony, and I don't have problems finding others to group with (and even if you find only one, duoing is better than soloing). Don't forget that even players with higher level toons have alts...

well spoken bbot.

My advice, when you hear negative things about the state of the game, is to take them with a grain of salt and log into a server and see for yourself.

Povar seems to still have a decent lower level population, and I still run into true newbs from time to time.

Aye! Some true noobs are up to level 69 (myself). Those of us cursed with "Curse of the Perpetual Noob" can always find an alt to play with you or shroud. BTW, think I got that curse off one of the Deathspeakers in Acrylia Mines; buzzards.

I have never done this, but if I was starting fresh today, I would pick a few servers, start a character and visit the Guild Lobby (you need Dragons of Norrath Expansion). There is a guild bulletin board area there. Check out the guilds who may have posted info and see if any are to your liking. You might have a better time as a true new player to get hooked up with a casual or family type guild.

Even the expansions that you download will cost you a bit.

Can't speak for all servers, but Povar has a decent lower level population. Seems like I hear about a new low lvl guild just about daily in PoK - Plane of Knowledge.

If you do the tutorial you'll get to lvl 10 in a night or so. After that it goes slower. The game will be around for years - so no worries there.

The game is a lot of fun if you get in with a good bunch of people. Fortunately, since the game has matured, most of the players are nice people. There is always something to do, and something you haven't seen. I've been playing since '99 and I'm amazed at how much I haven't done.

one nice thing about EQ is that most folks have many alts that get played too. Gennerally most folks can be found in the hot spot zones for the lower levels from around 10-40 then the 40's it's not too hard to find more folks playing and then after 46 there is the planes so grouping in PoJ is rather easy to eventually find a grp or start one yourself.

I have been playing for about 7 months. Yes, it was difficult to figure things out at the start. There are, fortunately, many many nice peeps who are still willing to help newbies. You have to ask a lot of times to join groups, so don't be afraid to start one, or ask to join one. Ask peeps questions. Hopefully the majority will remember being new to the game and will help. I have had very few bad experiences.
I'm also on the xegony server.
good luck

I would try Dot's suggestion about checking out different servers before you get to committed to one character.

I started playing this game 2 years ago on Fennin Ro. I loved it but even then was very frustrated about the lack of lower level players. I switched to Povar (Morden Rasp at the time) which was the "new player preferred" server and have enjoyed the game 100% more.

I would check out the servers Povar, Stromm and Maelin Starpyre first as they have all been newbie servers at some point in the recent past.

Good luck.

I see alot of people stating that for new players low level grops may be hard to find.......

Im gonna throw my Smiley: twocents in here, I have started new toons (Usually non-guilded to enjoy anominity) aplenty and (On MS anyways) usually within 10 - 15 minutes of leaving the tutorial I have received multiple tells asking me if I would care to join established groups.

From my perspective, it seems that the low level population is doing pretty well on MS. Smiley: smile
