add an option: "I avoided them like the plague" due to whatever reason (excessive size was mine)

First starting Everquest, West K was the place to run lion meat back and forth from Halas. I was involved with lots of groups there wacking the bandits at various bandit camps and turning red sashes in (in Qeynos I seem to recall?)

There was a lot to actually *learn* from the zone - lots of background put into it. The guards woundn't fight the bandits. One guard tower the guard(s) would attack you. One normal looking farm house had bandits inside and the normal looking farmers would join with them (if I recall correctly...) There were giants who would stomp through occasionally, and the warewolf (aka the knuckledragger).

We spent time in the zone and people actually learned and used this stuff. In some of the hills were bandits, but if you went too far in, you'd get to the Ogres(?) who were much higher level.

This kind of character to a zone is so endering and I have not found this in other MMORPGs. Someone actually spent some time and thought about it. Sure, many of the quests were flaky and you could "cheat" and take shortcuts and many of the rewards were not so great.

I also recall it because I destroyed an entire bag full of pelts, silks, etc by hitting the combine button.
Ouch.

Definetly West Karana. My first Toon was a human rogue from qeynos. I remember making my way from Qeynos Hills into west Karana for the first time leaving areas that were basically a newbie area, and heading into un explored territory for me. I remember my heart pounding and the exhilration of coming in close contact to a huge treant that was a red con, it was the biggest thing I come into contact yet in game and I was totally immersed in the game for the first time and loving it.

South Karanas -- Definitely.

Near the south part of South Karanas is what we fondly called the Chicken Coop. I spent many a happy hour killing aviaks there. The result -- Karanas Fried Chicken (KFC).

(out of character) Ok, so no chicken dropped. But the xp there was good, and best of all, I could sell everything I looted by simply climbing to the top and selling it to the top chicken. They say chickens are dumb. Buying items that was looted off of your own people, now THAT is dumb.

Ugh. Have no truly fond memories of the Karanas b/c of the sheer size of the zones. But to choose a favorite of them, it would be EK.
#33 Dec 11 2005 at 12:13 AM Rating: Decent
My FAVORITE of the Karanas objectively would be EK. Just something about that zone...

But since the question is about 'fondest memories,' it's SK easily. I spent a long time there with my first toon long long ago kiting aviaks, cyclopses and gnolls. Got a quill cloak to show for it too!

SK's KFC and its great music was the most memorable. Also, there's nothing like the memory of an Avocet chasing you all over the zone before slaughtering you just as you reach Lake Rathe.

South Karana is the one in which I spent the most time. After having quit for a year, I returned in the summer and took one of my alts (27NEC, now 65NEC) to the spires and a 40-something gnoll quickly laid waste to me. I figured I'd find someplace else to spend my late 20's, after it happened again upon retriving my corpse and composing myself.

Now I think I'll take my 27WIZ there for old time's sake. My 66CLR babysitter should help with the annoying higher level ones added since the Splitpaw upgrade.

When i first started the game, I only had the original expansion. After graduating from Blackburrow training school (hehee) I went to west karana, go lost with no maps and found the my way to the guard tower in north karana. Stayed there pulling beetles for a long time. Every char I made after that went soloing in North karana, where once in a while another player I would group with =)

Very fun times. Not like the excessive grinding these days

Well, I remember exploit killing the guy next to the well to get to 40'sh faster then anyone, and running through there when I was around 15 to get to the crocodiles in the oasis... oh joy... and probably then exploit killing spectres, then frost giants! Baha.. i'm evil :(

While I think SK is finger lickin good for exp, I have to say that WK has the fondest memories. Ah, the days of ignorance when my first toon was a half elf fighter (barely pre-kunark, when casters were able to make a living binding people at city gates, and when, lightstone in hand, I first ventured into the wide plains of the Karanas. "Well, this is a nice, long valley from the zone line. Is that a wolf ahead. No problem, at level 10, I can take him. Odd that it walks upright; and what a nice full moon out tonight... Loading, please wait". Later on, sitting in the Miller's field with my wife's cleric in tow, hunting scarecrows and bandits, and trying to avoid Froon and Choon (no kidding, they once spawned right down from the sky and dropped on my friggin head!). Ah yes, I remember it well...

West Karana, back in the day when lions agroed druids, it was a thrill the day we were finally able to beat the werewolf that wiped us at the mountain bandit camp. Medding with that book in your face and hoping a passing giant or cyclops wouldnt step on you. Looting the coveted bandit sashes. Those were the best times.

omg!!! WK ftw!!!!!

i'll never forget it.

There i was a lvl 12 druid in West Karana trying to find something to do... when what do i hear off in the distance???

A Farmer shouts : Run for your lives it's the Swarm!!!

I remember when I started playing. At level 6 my level 19 friend bought us a port to NK. This was just after Kunark came out. We were running to Qeynos to bind me there since there's easy hunting there and on the way I got eatten by a lion. It was so funny!
#43 Dec 12 2005 at 7:42 AM Rating: Decent
I picked NK.

I did do the KFC thing for quite some too, but NK is where I spent most of my time.

My Ranger spent 2mths (I'm a casual player) in NK camped by the gypsey village and staying close to the guard tower for protection. The Silver Griffon was my bane. It was fun watching this power house tear through HGs and both guards, but in the excitement I forgot to run, when I first got into the zone. When cutting throught there now, I often get him on track and kill him for payback.

What about Zahal the Vile? Anyone else remember trying to kill him when we were too young? I was shocked when the first 3 DoTs hit me too.

I must have killed over 1000 (I'm not kidding) highland lions to get ONE!!!! HG Lion Skin for my Fleeting Quiver too. Paying the tailor 1000pp for the combine did not make me feel any better.

And who can forget getting bound in the gypsey camp, knowing that it prevented a 45min corpse runs, literally across 6 zones. As anyone knows, getting bound in the camp creates a dangerous suitation too. I suffered the dreaded death loop (the one and only time, amazing how fast you learn) dealt to me by a HG that decided to go shopping in the camp. I died 9 times in 3mins before I figured how to get out of it.

Long live the Borer Beetle.

The Karana's were among my favorite zones in the game, I leveled 5 chars thru those zones, camping around the tower in North, and then moving to South Karana and camping outside Paw and KFC. Remember the bird up top that some factions could sell to? I use to get a kick out of killing 100s of his buddies and then selling their loot to him...

I absolutely loved the Karanas, but South Karana was my favorite by far. KFC, the gnoll spires, centaurs, and undead were all much fun. I still run my littles ones there every once in a while to beat up some aviaks or a gnoll or three. The zones are ever so deserted though. Too bad for them, quick exp for me.

Gotta be East . I made thousands and thousands by killing Spiders there. It gave me a BIG jump up in buying good gear. As well , I met some friends, 5 and 6 years ago that are still friends to this day.

Yeah , for me East all the way.

I voted for East since several things happened there for me:

1. Soloed a very red Proon with my druid.
2. Got a GM to kick out some high level KSers farming spiders
3. Forages

The others were a close second.

NK: First learned to charm animals with druid, BUGS!, first trip outside of GFay/Crushbone for my first character who was a Wood Elf.

SK: Camping gnolls, learning to track

WK: Bandits! Ogres would pwn you if you were not careful. First trip through with level 13 bard I ran into them and got killed. Had a scary time recovering my bod (first real CR). This was back before Shadowrest or Guild Lobby, dammit I needed my silver lapis ring!

As a necro, I really dislike all the Karanas, having had to kill a Paladin in each of them for my 1.5 epic.

My fondest memory may be just after killing the 4th paladin, Sir Gregon Sulltor, when I gated out of the East Karana...

Heh.. South Karana for sure..

I remember back pre kunark.. I had managed to level myself up to level 14 and ventured into this huuuuge zone.

Somehow I found my way to the treant camp, and waited patiently in line to get into the constant camping of these scarry creatures.

There would be a list of like 10 people constantly to get in on the action and the uber money they dropped, back then highest level on my server (tallon zek) was level 36!
so noone had tried out the hill giants for pp yet.

Treants and the huge amount of 10 gold each kill was where you got rich!

Later on when i got a bit higher i level, the splitpaw gnolls caught my attention and i spend months there getting levelled up. ( Powerlevelling wasnt invented and xp was sooo slow you would spend 8 hours just to get 1 yellow bubble into next level)

Hermit, Centaurs, undead, also tasted my dagger.. And your heart would stand still that ultra rare occation a NAMED would pop in your face as you roamed around the zone :)

Ahhh the momories :)

Definately South Karana... While it may not be the biggest of the Karanas, it has everything... giant treehouses, elephants, a shadow knight with an enormous skeleton for a pet... I love the wildlife, and especially the lore behind Splitpaw/Infected Paw... my favorite zones tend to include a lot of their own lore, and that is why Southern Karana is my favorite.
